NEW DELHI: West Indies have named a 15-member squad for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan, set to take place in Trinidad. Led by regular skipper Shai Hope, the squad blends experience with youthful energy, featuring several promising names the Windies have backed in recent times.

Teenage wicketkeeper-batter Jewel Andrew, who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2023, retains his spot after appearing in the recent series against England. The 18-year-old continues to impress and remains a key part of the team's plans moving forward.
Left-arm pacer Jediah Blades, who debuted in the 2024 Bangladesh series, has also been recalled. Amir Jangoo, who made headlines with a century on his ODI debut versus Bangladesh, keeps his place after playing against Ireland earlier this year.
West Indies enter the series on the back of a 2-1 T20I defeat at home. Head coach Daren Sammy views the series as vital for West Indies' push towards automatic qualification for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.
'Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup,' Sammy said. 'While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success. The upcoming matches against teams like Pakistan, who are ranked higher, provide crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points to improve our standing ahead of the World Cup.
'
West Indies are currently 10th in the ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings, while Pakistan are ranked fourth, behind India, New Zealand, and Australia.

Divya Deshmukh challenges Magnus Carlsen, drops ice-cold verdict after defeating ‘senior' Koneru Humpy: ‘The final was…'

Divya Deshmukh's recent victory at the FIDE Women's Chess World Cup perfectly reflected India's rise in the sport. What made it more special was that it was an all-Indian final with Divya taking on veteran Grandmaster Koneru Humpy. Before the final, Divya didn't even a single GM norm, and then fast forward to her victory, she became India's 88th Grandmaster. Divya Deshmukh spoke about her wish to face Magnus Carlsen. Divya's victory comes after D Gukesh's win at the World C'ships in December last year, when he beat Ding Liren. After Magnus Carlsen won his first World Championship title in 2013, beating Viswanathan Anand, Indian chess faced a short tenure of monotony. But now the new generation of chess players in India has been challenging for top honours in international events, heralding the beginning of another glorious chapter. Divya Deshmukh challenges Magnus Carlsen Speaking to Dainik Jagran recently, Divya opened up on her desire to face Magnus Carlsen one day, which showcased her hunger and desire. 'If I get a chance to play, I have to play with world number one chess player Magnus Carlsen. He has been a world champion and will learn a lot from playing against him,' she said. Meanwhile, she also gave some insight into her World Cup victory. "Talking about the tournament, all the players who participated in it were senior to me. I had faced an experienced player in the first round. Experience in such tournaments is the work. The final was going on, everyone was in tension, but I was just trying to focus on myself,' she said. Only 19 years old, she added, 'I have been playing chess since I was five years old. As far as I remember, I played my first move against my father, but I had to face defeat in this match. After that, I grew up slowly and today I am at this point.' She has also qualified for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, courtesy of her berth in the World Cup final.

Women's World Cup at Chinnaswamy in doubt as ICC, BCCI fret; KSCA awaits government nod post RCB parade stampede: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have been left anxious about the schedule of the upcoming Women's ODI World Cup, with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) yet to receive clearance from the state government to host matches at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium. Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium The eight-team, 50-over tournament is scheduled to be held in India from September 30 to November 2, with the opening match between India and Sri Lanka set to take place in Bengaluru. The venue is also slated to host three other fixtures, including one of the semifinals. However, according to a report by Cricbuzz, uncertainty now clouds those matches, as the KSCA awaits official permission in the wake of the tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory parade in June. The incident had claimed 11 lives and left more than 50 injured. KSCA was more recently forced to shift the Maharaja Cup T20 tournament from the Chinnaswamy Stadium to Mysuru. "We've written to the State Government and are awaiting a response. It's not as if they've denied permission. If that were the policy, they wouldn't have allowed the Maharaja Cup in Mysuru. So, we're waiting," a KSCA official was quoted by the website. "There is some more time for this and we're going step by step." The Chinnaswamy Stadium is scheduled to stage four matches. Following the opener, the next game is between England and South Africa on October 3, India versus Bangladesh on October 26 and the second semifinal on October 30. Overall, the World Cup will be held in five cities, four of which are ACA Stadium in Guwahati, Holkar Stadium in Indore, ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam and R Premadasa Stadium (Colombo). The eight teams in the Women's World Cup include - Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Pakistan, besides hosts India and Sri Lanka. Overall, 31 matches will be played - 28 league games, followed by two semifinals and the final.
