Sundowns come unstuck against stubborn Chippa United

TimesLIVE4 days ago
This was not the statement performance that Mamelodi Sundowns wanted but a glimpse into the brave new world for Chippa United.
Given the way they won the championship title last season and performed at the Fifa Club World Cup, Sundowns fans expected a powerful start but they came unstuck against an organised United who simply refused to be rolled over.
They settle for a 1-1 draw after Khaya Mfecane cancelled out Arthur Sales early goal in this exciting Betway Premiership match that was played in front of a lively crowd at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Saturday.
The major takeout for Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso is that he must find the solution at rightback with Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena not available for a variety of reasons.
It also remains to be seen if the continued unavailability of attackers Lucas Ribeiro, who was not in the matchday squad, and Peter Shalulile, who was an unused substitute, is going to affect them.
The pass from Matthews, the finish from Sales 😮‍💨🔥

For United coach Sinethemba Badela, he gave a glimpse into the future as they played enterprising football and did not show respect to the much-fancied Brazilians.
For most parts of this match, Sundowns dominated in all facets but the most important thing is they started the campaign with a point against the defending champions.
What lies ahead for United is consistency and playing well against the so-called small teams and that is going to be tested on Tuesday when they visit newly-promoted Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.
Sundowns returns to action on the same day against AmaZulu at Loftus where they will be looking for their first win of the season as they continue with what is going to be a busy month.
Cardoso made three changes to the team that convincingly beat Richards Bay during the quarterfinal stage of MTN8 last weekend with Mosa Lebusa ahead of Keanu Cupido and Fawaaz Basadien for Zuko Mdunyelwa.
In the midfield, Jayden Adams replaced captain Themba Zwane.
With these changes, Basadien made his first start for the Brazilians since he joined from Stellenbosch FC and Shalulile, who is rumoured to be on his way out of the club started on the bench.
Still missing for Sundowns are defender Mudau and reigning Footballer and Player's Player of the season Ribeiro who are also believed to be heading for the exit door.
On the other hand, Badela, who is one of the youngest coaches in the league, showed his hand in his first match for the club as he went with a good balance of youth and experience.
For experience, he went with Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, defenders Ayabulela Konqobe, Sirgio Kammies and in the midfield he opted for Goodman Mosele, Sammy Seabi and Mfecane.
United did not miss Sinoxolo Kwayiba who has joined Orlando Pirates and they will be boosted by the availability of Malian midfielder Abdoulaye Mariko who awaits his work permit.

Badela will be excited by the performances of debutants Mfecane, who was named the match-of-the-match, and 19-year-old Asanele Bonani who did not look out of place, who proved to be a handful for Grant Kekana Lebusa and Aubrey Modiba.
Sundowns opened the lead just after the half hour mark when Arthur Sales put the ball past Nwabali with the outside of the boot after he received the ball from Tashreeq Matthews.
The goal sparked urgency in the work of the hosts and they nearly drew level after 36 minutes when they caught Sundowns on the counter-attack with Xolani Sithole releasing Bonani who ballooned the ball over crossbar.
Chippa equalised after the hour mark when Mfecane benefited from a ball that deflected from Matthews before he unleashed a shot that beat Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Miguel Cardoso: Arthur Sales not a replacement for Lucas Ribeiro at Mamelodi Sundowns

AmaZulu's Ben Motshwari and Mamelodi Sundowns' Arthur Sales fight for the ball during their Betway Premiership match. Image: Backpagepix Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso believes Arthur Sales is a very good player who will be key to the club's success — but he was quick to dispel any suggestion that the lanky forward is a direct replacement for his Brazilian compatriot Lucas Ribeiro. The Portuguese coach essentially confirmed speculation that Ribeiro will be leaving the club while speaking to the media during the post-match press conference following their 2-0 Betway Premiership victory over AmaZulu on Tuesday night. Ribeiro — the standout performer of last season and winner of both the Footballer of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards, as well as the Golden Boot for the 2024/25 campaign — is believed to be heading to Qatar. Sales played on the right-hand side, the very position where Ribeiro previously shone. But Cardoso was quick to play down any expectations or pressure being placed on the younger Brazilian. 'It's important that we understand one thing,' he said. Video Player is loading. First of all, people should look at him as himself and not imagine that, now he's playing on the right, they'll see Lucas Ribeiro. 'There's no one who is going to be Lucas Ribeiro, and the coach is not looking for someone to be Lucas Ribeiro on the right — because that doesn't exist.' If ever there was confirmation that the attacker — who also won the award for Best Goal at the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA — is on his way out of Chloorkop, this was surely it. 'Lucas is Lucas, and Arthur is Arthur. Each player has his own characteristics. Arthur is a very good player who arrived in South Africa and wasn't given the attention and credit he deserves. 'Now, gradually, people are starting to understand. And if you look at the numbers — how he impacted the team last year — you'll realise that whenever he came onto the pitch, he was always contributing goals and assists. He was already important last year with the goals he scored.'

Kaizer Chiefs boss talks about the new star

Kaizer Chiefs have ticked another box in this transfer window. Long-term target Asanele Velebayi is officially in. The 22-year-old from Phillipi has upped Amakhosi's list of new signings to seven players, including the former Orlando Pirates duo Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane. Kaizer Chiefs starting 11 with Asanele Velebayi 'We are happy to finally have Asanele with us,' Motaung Jr told the club's website. Gallants prove their resilience under new coach Lafitte

Marumo Gallants coach Alexandre Lafitte pleased with his sides start to the season. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Marumo Gallants are emerging as the team to beat after another impressive 2–1 win over Betway Premiership title favourites Orlando Pirates on Tuesday. Goals from Daniel Msendami and Jaisen Clifford fueled the Bloemfontein-based outfit's spirited comeback at a packed Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium—after Patrick Maswanganyi had put the visitors ahead early in the first half. Siwelele sa Marumo have been impressive in the two matches they have played so far in the league, and they had to withstand a relentless onslaught from the Buccaneers which they successfully managed to resist picking up a crucial equaliser on the brink of halftime. Their surge of momentum began in the second half as they grew in confidence, while the Sea Robbers—who had started brightly—lost their rhythm and failed to create any chances in yet another disappointing showing for them. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading New coach Alexandre Lafitte has certainly hit the ground running, and having secured back-to-back wins after their opening day 2-1 win against Richards Bay, he is obviously pleased with how his side executed their game plan against the title favourites. 'It's a fantastic result. I am happy for the fans and the team,' Lafitte said after the match. 'It was a difficult game, they are a fantastic team, the game plan was good, because the objective was that when you don't have the ball, press high, and when you have the ball play a bit more. 'The first goal was good, and in the second half we had more possession and we used it well.' With the MTN8 taking centre stage this weekend, Lafitte and his charges will receive an extra weekend's rest. They will next face AmaZulu in a league encounter in just over a week. Interestingly, the Bloemfontein outfit has delivered their best football in the second halves of both their opening games, scoring decisive goals late in each contest. Lafitte credited this resilience and challenged his squad to keep evolving, stressing that they are not yet a finished product. 'It was a good performance and result for us, it's two games in a row with us scoring after 90 minutes and I think that it's good for us mentally. Moving forward it will be important to improve when we have the ball but I think we had a good start. 'I think it's important to have a structure, to break the space and find players free, and we will need to work for that for a long time. Sometimes you will make mistakes, but I would prefer if we made mistakes and learn from them and improve the quality of our game.' New centre-forward Clifford scored his first goal for the club—and, as one of only a few new recruits in a major squad overhaul, he provides a perfect example of Lafitte's vision. The coach also confirmed the club is still in the market for reinforcements before the transfer window closes. 'I am happy to be here, we have been working with the President to improve the squad, when the time is right, we will look into two or three players, a defender, midfielder and striker.'
