The 18-year-old Italian rookie became the third-youngest podium finisher in Formula One history, showing composure under immense late pressure from championship leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren, who managed to survive a collision with teammate Lando Norris to finish fourth.
This allowed Piastri to extend his lead in the drivers' standings to 22 points ahead of Norris, who crashed into him on lap 67 of the 70-lap race, damaging his front wing while attempting to overtake on the straight.
'Yep, I'm sorry," said Norris about his collision with Piastri. 'It's all my bad, all my fault. Unlucky, sorry. Stupid from me."
Charles Leclerc secured fifth place, ahead of his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, and Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg.
Esteban Ocon finished ninth for Haas, marking their 200th race with a solid points finish, ahead of Carlos Sainz for Williams.
Russell was thrilled to deliver his team's first win since the Las Vegas Grand Prix last year.
'It's amazing to be back on the top step. The last time was Vegas, and last year here felt like it was a victory lost. But today we obviously got the victory thanks to that incredible pole lap, and I am so happy to see Kimi on the podium as well."
Verstappen quickly congratulated both Mercedes drivers.
'It was quite a good race, although we were struggling on the tyres in the first two stints. We had an aggressive strategy and managed to hang in there. This was the maximum possible for us today."
Antonelli was warmly greeted by the large crowd at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with his name being chanted as he took his podium place.
'It was so stressful," he said. 'But I am super happy! I had a good start, managed to jump to P3, and just stayed up there in the front. I am so happy to bring this podium home."
The top six drivers were all on medium tyres when the race started, with Russell reacting quickest to pull ahead while Antonelli overtook Piastri for third. Verstappen stayed close to Russell's early pace, remaining within a second of him for the first five laps and three seconds ahead of Antonelli as he tried to apply pressure. By lap seven, the Mercedes was 1.5 seconds ahead.
By lap 10, the gap was two seconds as the Dutchman eased off to save his tyres before pitting early on lap 13 for hard tyres. This move promoted Antonelli to second behind Russell, with Piastri in third ahead of Hamilton, Norris, and Alonso.

Verstappen rejoined in ninth as Russell reacted and pitted, returning in seventh on hard tyres before Antonelli pitted from the lead on lap 15, leaving Piastri in the lead with Norris making it a McLaren 1-2.
Piastri pitted on lap 17 for hard tyres, giving Norris the lead after starting seventh on hard tyres.
After a bright start, Hamilton pitted on lap 16 and rejoined in 10th place, stuck in traffic, with reported damage to his car delaying his progress. On lap 26, Russell overtook Leclerc for second.
Two laps later, Leclerc pitted for more hard tyres, followed by Norris, who took medium tyres. 'I don't understand this choice," complained Leclerc, knowing it meant he had to pit again.
This sequence restored Russell and Verstappen to the lead, ahead of Antonelli and Piastri, with Norris charging in fifth, ahead of the two Ferraris. Verstappen was early to pit again on lap 37 but, with a fast out-lap, passed Antonelli as Mercedes responded in vain to the Red Bull undercut and began their second stops.

Salernitana players hospitalised with food poisoning after Samp play-off

Salernitana players have been hospitalised with food poisoning after returning south from a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their Serie B relegation play-off with Sampdoria. Salernitana said on Monday that training had been cancelled after 21 people among the playing and training staff picked up 'serious food poisoning' which caused illness during Sunday's trip back to Salerno from northern port city Genoa. 'The situation required the intervention of ambulances on arrival at Salerno airport and the hospitalisation of a significant number of those concerned,' added Salernitana. Italian media report that 16 people were hospitalised, eight of them from the playing squad, and that police had visited the hotel where Salernitana players stayed ahead of the first leg and which prepared the team's in-flight meal for the return to Salerno. Samp was relegated to the third tier for the first time in its history last month, only to be saved by a points deduction for Brescia which bumped the 1991 Italian champion into one of the division's two relegation play-off positions. The second leg of the play-off is scheduled for Friday night, but Salernitana haS asked that the match be pushed back to a later date following the rash of food poisoning. One of seven Italian clubs which has played all its football in the top two divisions, Sampdoria was relegated to Serie B in 2023. It was close to going bust before being saved by current president Matteo Manfredi and former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani, who has since exited the club. The club's current majority shareholder is Singaporean businessman Joseph Tey. Club icons Alberico Evani and Attilio Lombardo were hired as coaches in April in an attempt to save Sampdoria from the drop after significant transfer market activity both last summer and in January. Evani is Sampdoria's fourth head coach of the season after Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Sottil and Leonardo Semplice.

'I don't have any doubt': Enzo Maresca backs Liam Delap to succeed Harry Kane at England, doesn't assure £30 million signing starting role at Chelsea

Liam Delap signed for Chelsea for £30million from relegated Ipswich Town earlier this month (Image via ANI) Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca expressed confidence that new £30 million signing Liam Delap, acquired from relegated Ipswich Town, has the potential to succeed Harry Kane as England's future striker. Speaking ahead of Chelsea's Club World Cup opener against Los Angeles FC in Atlanta, Maresca highlighted his previous experience coaching Delap in Manchester City's under-21 team. The 22-year-old forward's arrival at Chelsea comes with high expectations, as he takes on the prestigious number nine shirt at the club. "I don't have any doubt that he can be in the future England's number nine," Maresca said when asked about Delap's potential to succeed the 31-year-old Bayern Munich striker Kane. Despite Chelsea's recent history with high-profile strikers like Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku, and Alvaro Morata struggling at the club, Maresca sees Delap handling the pressure well. "Liam knows quite well how important is the number nine for this club... I see him quite relaxed, easy, he's doing well, since he arrived he's working well," Maresca stated. The Italian coach emphasized the advantage of their existing relationship from their time at Manchester City. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 中年以降であれば、このゲームは必須です。 BuzzDaily Winners ゲームをプレイ Undo "We know each other already from years ago, so I know what Liam can give us, he knows what we can give to him to improve and to become a better player," Maresca explained. Yashasvi Jaiswal's Coach on England Prep, Opening Partner, & Playing Under Gill "He was keen to join us because he knows the way we play, the season that we were scored 24 goals. We like Liam, Liam likes us, so it was an easy conversation." Maresca clarified that Delap wasn't promised a starting position ahead of Nicolas Jackson. "I never say to a player you (will) be a first choice, the message is always the same, you arrive, you work hard, you work more than the other number nine (and you can be)," he added. The coach also mentioned Chelsea's interest in signing a left-winger later in the summer to replace Jadon Sancho, whose loan will not be made permanent. Regarding their upcoming Club World Cup match against LAFC, Maresca remained cautious. "I'm never confident, I don't know if it's something good or something bad, but I think because of the technology today, any game can be difficult," he said. "They can watch many games about us, we can watch many games about them, so every game becomes very complicated."
