Baeksang Arts Awards 2025: Culinary Class Wars and When Life Gives You Tangerines win top accolades
The biggest names in South Korean entertainment gathered on Monday night (May 5) to honour the best television series and movies of the year at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards, which is regarded as one of South Korea's most prestigious award shows.
Hosted by comedian Shin Dong-yup and actors Bae Suzy and Park Bo-gum, Monday's ceremony saw the war film Uprising and the period drama When Life Gives You Tangerines clinching the most wins, at three and four, respectively.
Netflix's hit cooking competition Culinary Class Wars ended up winning the Grand Prize for broadcasting.

Netflix to invest 1 billion euros in Spain productions to 2029
[MADRID] US streaming giant Netflix said on Tuesday (Jun 10) it was going to invest more than 1 billion euros (S$1.47 billion) in productions in Spain, which has becoming one of audiovisual creation hubs in Europe. 'Over the next four years we plan to invest over one billion euros in Spain,' Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos said at an event in the company's studios near Madrid. 'With this investment, we will be able to contribute even more to the Spanish economy, create more Spanish jobs, tell more great stories made in Spain,' he said, standing alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The event marked the 10-year anniversary of Netflix's presence in Spain. It opened its studios there – the first ones outside the United States – in April 2019, shortly after finding global success with the Spanish crime series Money Heist. Since then, it has turned the 22,000-square-metre studios into one of its main sites for film and TV production in the European Union. According to Netflix, its activity in the country supports more than 20,000 jobs. AFP

PHOTO: AFP PARIS – British Netflix drama Adolescence, which has sparked widespread debate about the toxic and misogynistic influences to which young boys are exposed online, can now be shown in French secondary schools, a minister has said. The initiative follows a precedent set in Britain. The producer of the series broadcast on Netflix has 'opened up the rights to us', and the French Education Ministry will 'offer five educational sequences to young people based on this series', Education Minister Elisabeth Borne told LCI TV late on June 8. These excerpts from the mini-series are 'very representative of the violence that can exist among young people', Ms Borne said. She added that the excerpts would be shown in secondary schools to children from the age of around 14 onwards. Such materials are intended to help raise awareness of the problem of 'overexposure to screens and the trivialisation of violence on social networks', as well as the spread of so-called masculinist theories – misogynistic spheres that advocate violence against women, said Ms Borne.
