Race 1 (1,000m)
Wengesai Masawi had his first runner as a trainer when (2) MFETHU ran second as favourite behind the promising Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained Exocet. The colt has shown up well on both starts and can get Masawi off the mark.
(1) HOLY STAR has gone close over course and distance before and has placed in all four starts. He rates a big threat.
(9) CHAMPAGNE PROBLEMS comes from a very much in-form yard and has a strong money chance.
(4) HOLLYWOOD HEIRESS has been rested but does show some ability although she drops in trip. She will be ridden by Qatari rider Saleh Salem Al-Marri.
Race 2 (1,200m)
(7) MASTER SILVANO has been knocking at the door and looks the part.
(1) BOARDWALK BREEZE has been placed in his last four wearing blinkers. He looks the biggest danger.
(6) SUSURRANDO makes his debut for a strong stable and is one to watch in the betting.
(8) ROYAL SWORD raced green in a fair debut but is likely to improve with the experience.
Race 3 (1,600m)
(11) FLAG CHAMP has found market support in both starts and, although well beaten last time, the opposition does look limited even if many go this trip for the first time.
(10) CLINTOSTAR has drawn one inside. He was narrowly beaten on the Poly last time in a form that proved a little suspect, but has a strong chance in this.
(6) LIGHTNINGFORK has run well over course and distance. This looks the right race for him.
(4) GOOD OMEN looks the pick of Michael Roberts' pair and can feature.
Race 4 (1,750m)
(11) PEPPER TREE was narrowly beaten last run on the Turffontein Inner track. She appears to have come to hand and she faces modest opposition.
(9) HARPA is also lightly raced and coming on the right way. She should make her presence felt.
(3) TERMINAL VELOCITY returns from a break. She has run well on this course and, if not short of a run, should go close.
(1) PRIVATE WORLD jumps in trip but is bred to stay and can surprise.
Race 5 (1,750m)
(3) PONGOLA took on much stronger last time after coming off a win. He should feature in this company.
(1) CIRCLE OF GRACE has not won for some time but has consistent Highveld form. Down in class and he has a good draw.
(2) GALAXY EXPLORER was much improved last run, even if that was on the Poly.
(5) SAIL TO THE MOON has his third run for his new stable and did improve last run. With the 4kg claim, he should run well.
Race 6 (1,400m)
(2) THE MASK steps up in trip with a tongue-tie and has been showing signs of improvement.
(1) FUTURE SAINT has the best of the draws. The drop in trip and handicap rating could see him home.
(6) MC DAZZLER has been disappointing but the change in stable could be to his benefit.
(5) BRAVE VOYAGER has come well at his last two. Distance suited and has a strong chance of making the frame.
Race 7 (1,000m)
(7) DARK MATTER shed her maiden at the third time of asking. She made her debut over course and distance and should go well again.
(8) MISS KANSAS shed her maiden over course and distance last time. That form has held up well and she can feature prominently.
(9) ARE YOU SURE had consistent form leading up to her recent maiden win.
(5) PRANKSTER is up in class but has come good at recent outings.
Race 8 (1,200m)
(6) SOHO STAR is holding form well and loves this course and distance. He gets a useful 4kg claimer aboard which could see him home again.
(9) FUTURE FLO is highly consistent. He is down in class and Rachel Venniker's 1.5kg allowance will add to his chances.
(5) MR MASTER STARTER may just have needed his last run. He has run well to stronger and, if back to his best, he should be right there.
There is nothing much between (2) WICCAN WARRIOR and (3) LICENCE TO THRILL, a short head separating them when last they met over course and distance. The latter is 0.5kg better off.
Race 9 (1,200m)
(3) TREATY OF PARIS has been contesting features of late and not far back. He looks to be a standout bet.
(5) ELIZABEDI GOLD has had one run back from the Cape and was probably in need of the outing - his first back since December 2024.
(8) KWAGGA BLITZ is one of only two Clinton Binda runners on the day. He was runner-up over course and distance last time and can feature again.
(2) NOW I GOT YOU is holding form well. Up in class, but he has a 4kg claimer aboard.

Chengdu, Al-Duhail secure progress in Asian Champions League Elite

Brazilian striker Felipe scored twice after Yang Ming-yang's header had given Chengdu a 68th minute lead to see off the Thai side, ensuring coach Seo Jung-won and his team will be included in Friday's draw for the league phase in Kuala Lumpur. Yang met Romulo's corner to put Chengdu in front and Felipe doubled the lead three minutes later as he latched onto a ball over the top of the Bangkok United defence. Felipe added the third with six minutes remaining at the end of another incisive counterattack. Al-Duhail, meanwhile, came back from going behind to a third minute close-range strike by Amin Hazbavi to progress. Ibrahima Bamba powered his header into the top corner in the 11th minute to level the scores and Adil Boulbina put his side in front 13 minutes later with a stunning strike past Seyed Hossein Hosseini. Krzysztof Piatek hit Al-Duhail's third in the 33rd minute at the end of a rapid break and the Qatari side held on despite conceding in the 93rd minute, when Milan Zakipour netted from close range. French hold the aces in Prix Maurice de Gheest

Visitors from across the British Channel are usually the top picks in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest (1,300m) at Deauville, but it is the home team that spearheads the charge this year. Defending champion Lazzat leads by example, and may go back-to-back for his Qatari all-conquering Wathnan Racing owners and French trainer Jerome Reynier. A luckless second in the Golden Eagle (1,500m) in Rosehill, Sydney in November brought an end to a purple patch of six wins in a row at home in France. However, the Territories four-year-old put in a lacklustre turn at his next overseas foray in Hong Kong in December - ninth to Voyage Bubble in the Group 1 Longines Hong Kong Mile (1,600m). Reynier tipped him out after such a taxing campaign, confident his charge had not showcased his true ability to the world. The Marseille conditioner was repaid handsomely for his perseverance, closing the unfinished business at one of racing's most coveted platforms. After a first-up defeat at home, Lazzat was quickly back in a rich vein of form, taking a Listed 1,200m race at Chantilly in the run-up to his highest acclaim thus far, a fighting win in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (1,200m) at Royal Ascot on June 21. But, should Lazzat falter in his mission, the French flag can still fly high with a host of other top-quality runners in the €380,000 (S$568,000) feature run down the Deauville straight on Aug 10. Chantilly trainer Francis-Henri Graffard heads in with two trump cards, Woodshauna and Rayevka. The former, a Wooded colt, is already a Group 1 winner of the Prix Jean Prat (1,400m) at the same Deauville track on July 6. The Aga Khan's Listed winner Rayevka, a filly by Blue Point, poked her head into the international picture with a third to Time For Sandals in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup (1,200m) at Royal Ascot on June 20. Perhaps the Graffard three-year-old duo's biggest edge is the handicap given they carry 57kg, 2kg less than Lazzat, who is one year older. "Both worked very well this morning," said Graffard to ParisTurf on Aug 5. "They'll run on Sunday and are in great shape. They'll be up against strong opposition like Lazzat and Beauvatier, but my two horses are also very good." The Yann Barberot-trained Beuavatier was third in the 2024 Prix Maurice de Gheest, but will also be better remembered by Singapore racegoers as the winner of the inaugural Group 3 Singapore Pools Prix de Ris-Orangis (1,200m) on the Prix Jean Prat undercard. Other worthy French Connection members are Andre Fabre's pair - Tribalist and Sajir - and Topgear, who was supplemented by Christopher Head for his Japanese owner Hisaaki Saito despite running last to Lazzat in Royal Ascot. While it would be foolhardy to underestimate the Brits, they probably have not sent out their heaviest artillery this time round. Godolphin's trainer Charlie Appleby left it late to confirm his two runners: Shadow Of Light, a two-time Group 1 winner as a two-year-old, but who has not quite cut it as a three-year-old, and five-time winner Symbol Of Honour, who did not fire a shot in the Group 1 July Cup (1,200m) at Newmarket in July. UK's best hopes may lie in Inisherin for trainer Kevin Ryan, who won the race in 2017 with Brando. A Shamardal four-year-old, Inisherin is no pushover, having won the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup in 2024 as well as the Duke Of York Clipper Stakes (1,200m) in York in May. He, however, finished midfield in the QEII Jubilee Stakes. "Inisherin is in a good headspace, is uncomplicated and we can't wait to see him run, while praying for a good track," said Ryan. "He was a non-runner in the July Cup after he had some trouble with his shoes before the start. But he has stayed in good form since." manyan@
