Soccer-Villa sign forward Guessand from Nice
(Reuters) -France-born Ivory Coast forward Evann Guessand has joined Aston Villa from Ligue 1 side Nice, the Premier League club said on Friday.
Villa did not disclose the duration of the 24-year-old's contract or the transfer fee, but media reports said it was a five-year deal worth 35 million euros ($40.71 million).
Guessand graduated from Nice's youth system and made his senior debut in 2020. He went on loan to Swiss club Lausanne-Sport and French side Nantes before having his best season yet in 2024-25, scoring 12 goals in Ligue 1 as Nice finished fourth.
He also scored his first goal for Ivory Coast in March in a 1-0 win over Morocco in the World Cup qualifiers.
"When I heard (Villa) wanted me, I didn't think twice. I'm ready to give my all," Guessand said in a video posted on social media by the English club.
Villa, who finished sixth last season, begin their league campaign with a home game against Newcastle United on August 16.

Wrexham denied by Southampton late show on Championship return
LONDON: Wrexham suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat to two late Southampton goals on their return to English football's second tier after 43 years, while Sheffield United were humbled 4-1 by Bristol City on yesterday. Backed by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham have enjoyed a dream ascent from the National League to the Championship with three consecutive promotions. After another summer of heavy investment in the transfer market, the Welsh side looked set to make a flying start to their ambition to reach the Premier League. The visitors led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Josh Windass penalty and could have been further in front as Windass also hit the bar. "I think when we reflect, it's a very proud day for the club playing at this level and there was a lot of positives for us," said Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson. "The new lads came in and have done really well but the existing players as well. I thought they were really good. "That gives us great heart for the season ahead." Southampton, relegated from the Premier League last season, were under the orders of Will Still for the first time and the former Lens coach had a telling hand to play in the turnaround. Still brought left-back Ryan Manning off the bench in the final quarter and the Ireland international secured a memorable three points for the Saints with a goal and assist. Manning's brilliant free-kick on 90 minutes levelled before he crossed for Jack Stephens to fire in the winner six minutes into added time. "It was crazy," said Still. "Good to show a bit of grit and determination. To bring the energy and place alive which probably helped us bundle the ball over the line is good." Ruben Selles' tenure as Blades boss got off to a nightmare start as Scott Twine's double and goals from Ross McCrorie and Anis Mehmeti gave Gerhard Struber a commanding win in his first match as Bristol City boss. Ryan Mason enjoyed a winning start as West Brom manager as Isaac Price's 15th minute goal secured a 1-0 win over Blackburn. Millwall shocked highly-fancied Norwich 2-1 at Carrow Road thanks to substitute Macaulay Langstaff's late winner. Dael Fry's first goal in more than three years ensured Rob Edwards' reign as Middlesbrough head coach got off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Swansea. Adrian Segecic scored on his debut to give Portsmouth a 1-0 win at Oxford. Stoke struck twice in stoppage time to beat Derby 3-1. Charlton also scored a winner in added time to beat Watford 1-0 on their return to the Championship. Coventry and Hull played out a 0-0 stalemate, while QPR and Preston shared the points in a 1-1 draw. Birmingham, bankrolled by an ownership group containing seven-time Super Bowl winning NFL quarterback Tom Brady, began their campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Ipswich after conceding a controversial stoppage time penalty.

Soccer-Man United boss Amorim hails Sesko's 'great potential' after big-money move
(Reuters) -New Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has all the attributes needed to help bolster their attack, manager Ruben Amorim said as he hopes to unlock the 22-year-old Slovenian's full potential after his big-money move to Old Trafford. Sesko completed his 76.5-million-euro ($89-million) switch from German side RB Leipzig to United on Saturday, with a further 8.5 million euros in bonuses. He signed a contract until 2030 to complete a new-look front three alongside fellow close-season signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. The Slovenia international, capped 41 times, scored 39 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig. "He has the characteristics that we needed," Amorim told MUTV on Saturday. "Ben is a player - with all the information that we have - that we need to stop the guy from working, not the opposite! "So that is also important. He's really young. He's good in the air, he's good at running the channels, good on the ball. I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot and, for sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. "He has the right character to be in this group, so I'm really happy to have him." Sesko was introduced at Old Trafford before Saturday's friendly match against Italian side Fiorentina, which United won 5-4 on penalties after drawing 1-1. "He is going to notice, since the first day and first training, that he is in the right place," Amorim added. "He is going to a new building (at Carrington), that is also important. Things are getting better but, in the end, we need to win games." United, who have spent around 200 million pounds ($270 million) following their 15th-place finish in the Premier League last season - their lowest in the top flight in 51 years - begin their new league campaign at home against Arsenal on August 17. Heung Min makes instant impact in LAFC debut
CHICAGO: South Korea star Son Heung Min made his Major League Soccer debut for Los Angeles FC (LAFC) on Saturday, providing a burst of energy as a second-half substitute in a 2-2 draw with the Fire in Chicago. Heung Min was brought down for a penalty in the 77th minute that Denis Bouanga converted to clinch a draw in the 81st minute – VAR confirming the spot-kick after the referee had allowed play to continue. "It was a great pass. Obviously it was definitely contact and it was definitely a penalty, I have no doubt about it," said Heung Min, who was sent sprawling by Carlos Teran after racing on to a through ball with the goal in his sights. "A bit disappointed not getting three points, but I think everybody put in a lot of effort. (I'm) happy I made my debut and I hope the goals come soon." The former Tottenham captain also had a string of shots on goal, including one blocked in second-half injury time. Heung Min signed with LAFC on Wednesday for a reported MLS record US$26 million after a decade with Premier League club Spurs, where he became a household name. The South Korea captain had announced the previous Saturday in his homeland that he would be leaving the north London club and departed as Tottenham's fifth-highest goalscorer of all time with 173 goals in 454 appearances. Heung Min will not get a chance to play in front of home fans in Los Angeles until Aug 31, when Western Conference leaders San Diego will be the visitors. But around the Fire's SeatGeek Stadium there were a lot of fans wearing his jerseys, waving South Korean flags and holding up signs welcoming Son to MLS. Cheers greeted his entry in place of David Martinez in the 61st minute with the teams level at 1-1. Jonathan Bamba put Chicago 2-1 ahead in the 70th minute and were pressing again when Brian Gutierrez's shot bounced off the post and LAFC seized the rebound. Nathan Ordaz played the ball forward for Heung Min to race away. He had a first MLS goal in his sights when he was brought down. The penalty allowed LAFC to level for a second time. Carlos Teran had opened the scoring for the Fire in the 11th minute with a header from a corner. Eight minutes later Ryan Hollingshead nodded in to make it 1-1. Heung Min had said at his introductory press conference – attended by luminaries including Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass – that he felt fighting fit and wanted to get on the pitch "as soon as possible." He will have his next chance when LAFC, who moved up a spot to fifth in the Western Conference, visit the New England Revolution next Saturday. "It was a decent 30 minutes in my legs, so, yeah, getting ready for next week," Heung Min said.
