By: GL Oh Text Size: Win and An. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah women's football team is hoping to reclaim the National Women's League title this season. They failed to defend their title last season after collecting only 31 points from 10 wins, one draw and three losses to finish seven points behind overall champions Kelana United, who managed 12 wins, one draw and one loss. Team manager Muhd Arziz Afizy Rumsani said the team is ready and they have also recruited two foreign import players for the challenge. 'We have made thorough preparation ahead of the new season including adding two quality foreign players in Win Theingi Tun from Myanmar and Sebin An from South Korea. 'We believe their presence will not only strengthen the team, but also give local players an opportunity to learn from them,' he said. Meanwhile, Sabah Football Association (Safa) president Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya hoped the two players with their vast international experience will help to raise the team and make them even stronger this season to challenge for the title. Sabah women are to play Kelana United on July 19 in the season opener at the Kuala Lumpur Stadium. Meanwhile, Sabah FC's Asean Charity Shield match against Thailand top club Buriram United at the Rainbow Stadium in Pattani on Sunday evening plays an important role in their preparation for the new Super League season. Coach Alto Linus said the match will help the players to build on their chemistry and tactical aspect of the team. 'This invitation to play against one of the most successful teams in Southeast Asia serves as an important platform in our efforts to build compatibility and strengthen the players' tactical understanding ahead of the upcoming Malaysia League season,' he said earlier on Sunday. It is Sabah FC's second friendly after the 4-0 victory over Kasuka FC from Brunei held a week earlier and Alto said there may be more matches for the players before the start of the season. 'Our main focus right now is to improve the physical fitness level of the players. We will need three or four more matches in order for us to evaluate the performance of each player before a decision is made on the starting lineup for the 2025/26 season,' he added. He is also optimistic that the team will do well in the new season. 'Sabah FC finished strongly last season to finish in third place. It is certainly a big challenge for the team again and it won't be an easy task to maintain the position. 'However, we remain positive and confident in the planning and commitment shown by the coaching team and the players,' he said. Sabah FC's opening match in the new season is against Melaka FC at Likas Stadium on August 10 before the away tie against Kuala Lumpur City FC at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras on August 13. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 592 compete in Oceanman Kota Kinabalu

Published on: Monday, July 21, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 21, 2025 Text Size: Some of the competitors taking part in the event on Sunday. Kota Kinabalu: Pantai Dalit again became the playground for 592 swimmers from 39 countries, vying to qualify for the Oceanman World Final Championship 2025 in Dubai, UAE, from December 3 to 7. This year's edition of Oceanman Kota Kinabalu challenged swimmers of all ages and abilities to test their limits against the backdrop of the breathtaking Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu's coastline. Advertisement The event featured a range of distances, including the Sprint 2km, 5km, 10km, and 500-metre relay race, as well as the Oceankids 500-metre race, catering to swimmers of all levels. Despite the choppy waves and strong wind conditions on Sunday, which affected the event's scheduling, the event still proceeded relatively smoothly. 'We wanted all our swimmers to swim and compete under the best sea conditions,' said Oceanman Event Director Azura Zainol Abidin. 'Based on the technical review, we had to decide to change some of the flag timings,' she concluded. Oceanman Kota Kinabalu offered a unique and unforgettable experience of swimming in crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush tropical landscapes. 'With such strong international representation, I believe Oceanman will help propel Sabah's reputation as a leading sports tourism destination in Malaysia,' said Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jeffrey Jimit. 'As the host venue for 2024 to 2026, we are excited about the potential this event holds for positioning Sabah as a prime destination for sports tourism. And with the event being held in Tuaran instead of the city centre, we are also excited to be able to highlight rural tourism to all the participants,' Julinus added. Julinus also remarked that the economic impact of events like Oceanman cannot be overstated. Sports tourism is a growing segment that attracts high-spending visitors who not only participate in the event but also explore the surrounding areas. By hosting this prestigious series, STB is positioning Sabah as a destination for active travellers who seek meaningful, adventure-filled experiences. The Oceanman World Series event is the largest open-water event in the world. Oceanman Kota Kinabalu 2025 is organised by Tough Gorilla Ventures with support from the Sabah Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia and Shangri-la Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu as the co-sponsors. The top 10 swimmers in every age group, as well as the top 3 from the Inspiration category, will get a qualification slot for the Oceanman World Final in Oceanman, Half Oceanman and Sprint distances. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
