Kota Kinabalu: Pantai Dalit again became the playground for 592 swimmers from 39 countries, vying to qualify for the Oceanman World Final Championship 2025 in Dubai, UAE, from December 3 to 7. This year's edition of Oceanman Kota Kinabalu challenged swimmers of all ages and abilities to test their limits against the backdrop of the breathtaking Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu's coastline.
Advertisement The event featured a range of distances, including the Sprint 2km, 5km, 10km, and 500-metre relay race, as well as the Oceankids 500-metre race, catering to swimmers of all levels. Despite the choppy waves and strong wind conditions on Sunday, which affected the event's scheduling, the event still proceeded relatively smoothly. 'We wanted all our swimmers to swim and compete under the best sea conditions,' said Oceanman Event Director Azura Zainol Abidin. 'Based on the technical review, we had to decide to change some of the flag timings,' she concluded. Oceanman Kota Kinabalu offered a unique and unforgettable experience of swimming in crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush tropical landscapes. 'With such strong international representation, I believe Oceanman will help propel Sabah's reputation as a leading sports tourism destination in Malaysia,' said Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jeffrey Jimit. 'As the host venue for 2024 to 2026, we are excited about the potential this event holds for positioning Sabah as a prime destination for sports tourism. And with the event being held in Tuaran instead of the city centre, we are also excited to be able to highlight rural tourism to all the participants,' Julinus added. Julinus also remarked that the economic impact of events like Oceanman cannot be overstated. Sports tourism is a growing segment that attracts high-spending visitors who not only participate in the event but also explore the surrounding areas. By hosting this prestigious series, STB is positioning Sabah as a destination for active travellers who seek meaningful, adventure-filled experiences. The Oceanman World Series event is the largest open-water event in the world. Oceanman Kota Kinabalu 2025 is organised by Tough Gorilla Ventures with support from the Sabah Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia and Shangri-la Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu as the co-sponsors. The top 10 swimmers in every age group, as well as the top 3 from the Inspiration category, will get a qualification slot for the Oceanman World Final in Oceanman, Half Oceanman and Sprint distances. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC brushed aside DPMM FC from Brunei 3-1 in their latest pre-season friendly at Likas Stadium on Saturday. They took a 2-0 lead at half time against this season's Super League newcomers with goals from Daniel Ting in the 11th minute and Miguel Angel Garrido Cifuentes in the 31st minute. Daniel added his second in the 71st minute before the visitors reduced the deficit late in the match. It was also the third pre-season match for Sabah FC following the 2-8 thrashing by Thailand top club Buriram United in the Asean Charity Shield match held two weeks ago in Thailand preceded by the 4-0 win over another Brunei club side Kasuka FC a week earlier at Likas Stadium. Coach Alto Linus was happy with the progress of the players following the big win. 'It was a good result from the team, but there are still several aspects of our game that need to be improved before the start of the new league season. 'I am satisfied with the overall performance of all the players, including the substitutes who came in the second half. 'This friendly was to strengthen the team's match fitness before the league begins in early August and I want to see the players are fully prepared and able to maintain their consistency to get positive results in every match,' he said. Meanwhile, the Rhinos are set to play more friendly matches before the opening match in the new season against Melaka FC at Likas Stadium on August 10. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabah women emerge runners-up

Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: The State women deaf futsal players showing off their medals with the two officials. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah women deaf futsal team came in second after losing 1-9 to Penang in the final of the 5th Malaysian Deaf Futsal Championship held at the RKS Sports Centre in Petaling Jaya on July 25. They had earlier booked their place in the final with wins over Negeri Sembilan (3-1), Perak (3-1) and Melaka (2-0). Sabah Deaf Sports Association President Spencer Soo Kok Heng was delighted with the team's achievement in their maiden appearance in the National Championship. 'It was the first time we joined the competition and seven players were unable to make the trip because of fund issues. 'Despite only being able to feature eight players from the 15 allowed, finishing second was still a very good result. 'Furthermore, we need to take part in this tournament otherwise we can't qualify for Sopma (Malaysian Deaf Sports Games) XXII 2025 to be held in Sarawak this October,' he said. Meanwhile, the team was led by manager Azmi Saip with Lo Fook Fah as coach and the players were Mary Pamela Sylvester, Nicol Yeanna Peter, Sharolyn Arrabella Obil, Brigette Yasin, Fellen Tijin, Veaa Sterra Henry, Annzie Benedict and JC Ezra Grace Jerial @ Jiral. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
