Skills I have are good enough to play for India: Sai Kishore

R Sai Kishore
CHENNAI: Left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore was sparingly used in his first five seasons of the
IPL
, playing just 10 matches between 2020 and 2024. When the opportunity to cement his place in the Gujarat Titans 'playing XII' arose at the start of the season, the 28-year-old from
Tamil Nadu
grabbed it with both hands. Sai Kishore was one of GT's key contributors in the run to the playoffs, finishing as their second-highest wicket-taker with 19 scalps in 15 games. In an interaction with TOI, the lanky slow bowler spoke about playing an extended run of matches, shouldering more responsibility, how he overcame a rough patch and more. Excerpts:
You finally got a sustained run of matches. How was the challenge?
I am happy that I was able to deliver performances in the chances that I got.
But at the same time, I want to keep improving. While coming up against international batters, I knew what to do and what not to do. I got a good understanding of how they are approaching my bowling. I played against a lot of players for the first time; the more I play, the better I will get.
Do you think that you are knocking on the Indian selectors' door?
I feel that the skills I have are good enough to play international cricket.
I have always had that belief; the belief grows when it is backed up with performances. The biggest delivery that I can develop is patience. I have my aspirations, but I have to stay happy in my journey. I bowled the carrom ball this season and I have a lot more variations up my sleeve. Karun Nair (back in the Test squad) is one of my biggest inspirations; he has batted beautifully and scored plenty of runs.
If I deserve a spot, I will get my chance.
If I do not get picked, I will look to get even better.
How was your preparation for the season?
Over the last four-five years, I have been working with R Ramkumar (former Tamil Nadu player) on my bowling. The work we put in before the IPL season came in handy. At GT, I have Aashish Kapoor, another former TN spinner. They both have been instrumental in my bowling coming through. In terms of mindset, I expected the least out of myself this IPL season.
As time would have it, when I expected the least, I had my best season.
What was your approach when ace leggie Rashid Khan was not in the best of form?
Taking the lead role happened naturally; it is not that I am new to the role. Wherever I have played, I have thought like a captain. Rashid is a very good bowler, but he did not have the season that he would have liked. When I got the role, I felt that it was a perfect match. When you are ready and prepared, everything just falls into place.
You had a lean phase when you hardly bowled two overs per match. How did you feel then?
With the introduction of the 'Impact Player' rule, we had seven bowling options, so I am not required to bowl sometimes. It is not that I cannot bowl. Looking at it from the team's perspective, I was fine with it but I was ready to do any job. It was clearly communicated to me by Ashish Nehra (GT head coach) on why we had such plans. I did not take anything personally.
Did lack of bowling disrupt your rhythm?
It is definitely helpful if I perform the same role again and again. But if you want to excel as a T20 bowler, you should be able to bowl in all phases. Having not had many chances in the previous seasons, I prepared myself to take the ball at any stage. When I am playing for TN or in the TNPL, I am comfortable bowling in the death overs. Those experiences came in handy.

Aamir Khan Welcomes Sachin Tendulkar Home; Sitaare Zameen Par Cast Jumps With Joy

Last Updated: Aamir Khan welcomed Sachin Tendulkar home and introduced him to the Sitaare Zameen Par cast. The video is going viral. Aamir Khan welcomed Sachin Tendulkar home in the presence of well-known names from the film industry. As a video from their meeting goes viral, fans can't help but notice the joy on the faces of the newly-launched Sitaare Zameen Par cast after spotting the former Indian cricketer. Sachin, who is close friends with Aamir, arrived to meet him with his wife Anjali. After the video went viral, fans drew speculations about the setting of the meeting. While some social media users claimed it took place at Aamir Khan's house, others believed it happened after a special screening of Sitaare Zameen Par. In one video, a guest is seen informing Aamir that Sachin has arrived while the former was playing foosball, prompting him to warmly welcome both Sachin and Anjali. The moment the cricket legend appears, the other guests light up with excitement and begin chanting his name. Sachin, visibly humbled, remained calm as he greeted the guests and Sitaare Zameen Par cast one after the other. The superstar was last seen in 2022 film, Laal Singh Chaddha. 'Well, I'm not considering it a comeback film, quite honestly," Aamir told us exclusively. 'My films usually come out once in three years anyway. A lot of actors have 8 to 10 flops, but we don't call those comebacks, do we? I've had just one flop, and you're calling it a comeback? I haven't gone anywhere," he added. Aamir explained that he was drawn to Sitaare Zameen Par because its story felt like a natural continuation of the message delivered in his 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. 'The script felt like an extension of what we were trying to say in Taare. That film was about inclusion, about a child with a learning disability. But in Sitaare, the challenge is even greater. It deals with individuals who have intellectual disabilities—children on the autism spectrum, with Down syndrome—who are much more atypical compared to dyslexia. And what's even more beautiful is that this time, it's not the neurotypical person helping them, but the other way around. The neurodivergent kids help the coach. That's why I feel this film goes ten steps ahead in the same theme." Aamir added that the story resonated deeply with him, so much so that it felt like a 'spiritual sequel" to Taare Zameen Par, which is why the makers settled on the title Sitaare Zameen Par. Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna, and produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. Also starring Genelia Deshmukh and ten newcomers, the film is a remake of the Spanish film, Champions. It releases on June 20. First Published:

Ricky Ponting supports Jasprit Bumrah exclusion, calls BCCI's decision ‘spot on': 'I think the timing is right...'

The BCCI selection committee's decision to name Shubman Gill as the captain ahead of the experienced Jasprit Bumrah, who even led India in two Tests during the recent Australia tour, did not sit well with many experts. However, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting jumped to the defence of the BCCI, saying that the decision was absolutely spot on and that the timing to bring in Gill couldn't have been better. The Test captaincy was Bumrah's for the taking, having led India thrice before, including twice in Australia in the last season, where India won in Perth in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. However, a back injury in the Sydney Test, which later saw him miss the Champions Trophy, left the selectors concerned and subsequently dented his chances of taking over the reins in Test cricket. Speaking on the ICC Review, Ponting said BCCI was right in naming Gill as the captain because he felt India shouldn't have a captain who could be missing matches repeatedly due to injuries. He also urged the selectors to give Gill a lengthy rope as a captain. "I actually think it's the right move. I know there's a lot of other people out there, pundits out there saying they can't understand why it wasn't Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it's pretty simple," Ponting said. "Bumrah's injuries are holding him back a bit in the last couple of years and you don't want that with a captain. You can't have a captain coming in and missing games here and there. So I think it's the right decision. Now that they've made it, it's one they've got to stick with and give him a good crack at it for a long period of time." Having seen Gill from close quarters in IPL, where the youngster has been leading the Gujarat Titans squad since 2024, Ponting felt the timing to name him the Test captain couldn't have been better. "Even just looking back at the way he's handled this current GT team through this IPL, I think leadership sits really well with him," Ponting said. "And the important thing for me with leadership as well is if you're a batter and you're a captain, you have to be scoring runs. And Shubman is doing that in IPL and I think the timing is right. I think you'll have a good captain who'll make a lot of Test runs going forward."
