Despite some tough injury luck to start the season, Toronto (33-29) is holding up in the competitive AL East, currently 5.5 games back of the division-leading New York Yankees.
On Friday morning, the team revealed some good news on a pair of pitchers recovering from major injuries, as reported by The Athletic's Mitch Bannon.
Perhaps the most exciting was a sudden update on former first-round pick Alek Manoah, who hasn't pitched live in a year.

According to Bannon, the 27-year-old Manoah is "expected to face live hitters for the first time" on Tuesday since undergoing a hybrid internal brace procedure in June 2024.

Manoah has experienced a roller coaster beginning to his MLB career after making the All-Star team and finishing third in AL Cy Young award voting in 2022. The next season was not good to him or Toronto after posting a 5.87 ERA and 3-9 record over 19 starts and 87 1/3 innings. However, he gave fans a glimmer of hope to start last season with a 3.70 ERA in five starts before his elbow injury sidelined him long term.
Another fellow first-round draft pick also recovering from Tommy John surgery, Brandon Barriera, is farther ahead in his rehabilitation. As for his next step, he'll soon be joining the Florida Complex League (FCL) on a rehab assignment, per Bannon.
Barriera, 21, hasn't pitched since last April.

Upset Kyle Larson Takes Aim at Denny Hamlin and Another Driver at Michigan

Upset Kyle Larson Takes Aim at Denny Hamlin and Another Driver at Michigan originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kyle Larson finished fifth in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan. His rival Denny Hamlin won the race and tied the Hendrick Motorsports driver and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell with three wins apiece in the season's first 15 races. Advertisement Early in the second stage, Larson was running in seventh when he pulled up alongside Hamlin on the outside and attempted to pass when the No. 11 car slid up the track and squeezed the No. 5 against the wall, forcing him to lift. 'Look out the [expletive] windshield Denny instead of the [expletive] mirror,' an upset Larson said over the team radio a lap later. Kyle Larson during final practice at Indianapolis Motor J. Rebilas-Imagn Images After the race, the 2021 champion was questioned about his frustration levels on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. 'Yeah, I just got frustrated a couple times,' Larson admitted. 'Denny did what Denny does and — yeah, just ran an angle around one and two like I was never outside of him and ran us out of room. So I was frustrated there. "And then, yeah, Ty Dillon was just mirror driving. We were all running 74th back there and he was mirror driving me, then mirror driving Blaney and I just got kind of fed up with it. It just doesn't make sense to mirror drive at a place like this. Like we can all benefit from each other if we can just work together when we're in a line like that. But, I don't know. So yeah, that was frustrating.' Jordan Davis Addresses New Role With Eagles

Jordan Davis Addresses New Role With Eagles originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jordan Davis has been a very important part of the Philadelphia Eagles over the last few years as the former first-round defensive tackle has worked as a run-stuffer. Advertisement As he gets set for an important fourth season with the franchise, though, he knows that the team will be expecting even more from him in 2025. A big reason? Philadelphia needs him to be more of a pass rusher than ever before. Ever since he came out of Georgia, Davis has been known as more of a run-stopping defensive tackle. He never showed much pass rushing prowess with the Bulldogs or in his first four seasons with the Eagles. That is about to change. … or so the Eagles hope. Speaking to reporters during Eagles voluntary workouts, Davis detailed how he was preparing himself to be more than just a first- and second-down run defender. Advertisement 'I'm getting into great shape and working hard and understanding the nuances of pass rushing,' Davis said. 'Not even just (coach) Clint Hurtt, but (teammate) Nolan Smith has been teaching me things. "When it's just stuff like that, learning stuff from different players and coaches, they want you to be your best at pass rush. They want you. They expect that from you." Davis had his fifth-year option picked up by the Eagles this offseason. … in anticipation of getting more from him. In his first three seasons with the team, he managed to record just 3.5 sacks. Philadelphia will need a jump up from a former first-round pick from that kind of production. Advertisement That is why Davis is doing everything he can to be in shape - physically and intellectually - for the long season ahead. If he can build off of last year's improvements as a rusher, he may be in for his best year yet. Swimming-Canadian teen McIntosh shatters 400 metres freestyle record

(Reuters) -Canadian three-times Olympic champion Summer McIntosh set a world record in the women's 400 metres freestyle at the Canadian Swimming Trials in Victoria, British Columbia, on Saturday. The 18-year-old clocked 3:54.18 to better Australian Ariarne Titmus' mark of 3:55.38 set at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. "Going into tonight, I knew that my training has been really good these past few months, and I knew that I could do something special," McIntosh told public broadcaster CBC. "So being able to input my training in doing that - I didn't think my training would be 54.1 but I'm really happy with that." At the Paris Olympics, McIntosh became the first athlete from Canada to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games. In Paris, the four-times World Aquatics champion won gold in the 400 metres individual medley, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley, as well as taking silver in the 400 freestyle. But things felt different at the Canada trials. "I just felt so strong throughout, and that's never been the case in the 400 freestyle for me. That last 100, I'm always really, really hurting. "But I flipped at the 200 and I was just cruising, so I knew that I was having a strong swim. I could tell by the crowd and knew the way they were cheering that I was probably close to the world record. "So I really tried to push that last part for them."
