‘BRICS remains a powerful force…' says PM Modi; shares hug with Brazil president Lula da Silva
Upon arriving in Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit, PM Modi warmly greeted Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and shared a hug with him.
"Grateful to President Lula for hosting this year's BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. BRICS remains a powerful force for economic cooperation and global good," PM Modi had also posted on X. Narendra Modi's post on X
Brazil is the fourth country as part of PM Modi's 5-nation visit for the 17th BRICS Summit.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin skipped the summit.
Sunday, July 6 marks the fifth day of the Prime Minister's longest diplomatic visit in the last ten years.
PM Modi embarked on the tour on July 2, which will last until July 9.
After his meeting with the Brazilian president, PM Modi also met with South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa.
During the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, Prime Minister Modi will exchange views on key global issues, including peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, responsible use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, and economic and financial matters.
Upon his arrival in Brazil, PM Modi received a warm and vibrant welcome from the Indian community in Rio de Janeiro. He also witnessed a musical performance of traditional prayer songs.
Members of the Indian community held a traditional dance performance on the theme of 'Operation Sindoor' while welcoming PM Modi.
Sharing his sentiments on the social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi said he was amazed by the Indian diaspora's enduring connection to Indian culture.
"Members of Brazil's Indian community gave a very vibrant welcome in Rio de Janeiro. It's amazing how they remain connected with Indian culture and are also very passionate about India's development! Here are some glimpses from the welcome," PM Modi wrote on X.
BRICS, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, with Indonesia joining in 2025.

However, French intelligence says Chinese embassy staff echoed the same narrative during meetings with defence officials in other countries, including those considering Rafale purchases. Beijing denied the allegations. China's defence ministry said the claims were 'groundless rumours and slander," insisting it maintains a responsible policy on arms exports. France's Defence Ministry responded by saying that Rafale was the target of a 'vast campaign of disinformation." The ministry added that the attack was not just against an aircraft but aimed at undermining France's defence credibility and industrial strength. Dassault has sold 533 Rafales globally, with 323 of them going to countries such as Egypt, India, the UAE, Greece, and Indonesia. Indonesia, which has already ordered 42 jets, is reportedly considering more. Experts say China's goal may be to weaken France's growing security ties in Asia. According to Justin Bronk, a military analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London, the campaign was likely designed to limit Western influence in the Indo-Pacific and promote China's defence industry instead. "We express strong condemnation of any acts of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, whenever, wherever and by whomever committed.
