Safe Internet Campaign increases awareness of social media usage
In this regard, society, in particular parents, needs to be given exposure and early education on the prudent use of the internet so as not to become victims of online scams, online gambling, cyberbullying as well as paedophilia.
Therefore, in raising awareness among the community, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) went to the ground to hold the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) in conjunction with the Penang-level Kita MADANI Carnival at Seberang Perai Tengah District Education Office (PPD) here today.
Through the 'pocket talk' session delivered by an MCMC representative, visitors were informed about the age limit for children under 13 to use social media applications under the supervision of parents or guardians.
Additionally, the MCMC shared about the effects and consequences of excessive use of social media applications among children, and subsequently provides tips or knowledge on using the internet safely and ethically.
A mother, Nor Ashikin Mohd Rosli, 31, said the commission's briefing session was very beneficial and opened the eyes of parents to be more aware of controlling their children's internet usage, especially social media applications.
'I do monitor and control the use of gadgets and internet usage of my eldest child who is six years old. If he wants to use the internet, I have to be there too, I don't let him do it alone. I allow him to use the handphone for at least an hour before bed, and even then, only to watch pre-uploaded shows. Even we adults can be affected by the internet or social media apps, let alone children, so I avoid it.
'Raising children now is more challenging as in the past, internet usage was not yet widespread,' the housewife told Bernama.
Another housewife, Shamshu Salina Mohd Ali, 44, also shares Nor Ashikin's view, adding that internet usage among children should be limited to educational purposes only.
'My child doesn't have gadgets and only accesses the internet using a computer. That's just to play Roblox. It's not just a game, but it greatly helps in my child's educational development, especially in mastering English, Mathematics and Science. But I limit it to three hours a day,' she said.
Meanwhile, Postal Forum, a self-regulatory body designated by the MCMC, also held a sharing session titled 'Be Aware of Your Rights (Post and Courier)'.
Postal Forum head Nur Hafizah Hanifah said the main functions of the body include representing the rights and interests of postal and courier service users, handling complaints, as well as providing feedback, and making recommendations to MCMC regarding the interests of postal and courier service users.
'We are not complaint resolvers but intermediaries between users and licensed courier companies under the MCMC. We also developed a code of practice for industry adjustment, and this Postal Services Code of Practice was approved by the MCMC on Dec 30, 2024.
'It was established as a guideline and reference for these companies regarding best practices to be used for the benefit of consumers,' she said.
She added that her organisation is currently intensifying advocacy activities and raising public awareness on matters related to consumer interests and rights, including parcel scams that use the names of courier service companies to deceive consumers.
More than 40 exhibitors, consisting of government and private agencies, participated in the Kita MADANI Carnival which was organised by the Penang Information Department. The event was also filled with various activities aimed at strengthening ties with the community.

Nearly 9,000 banners taken down in MBDK's fight against illegal adverts
MBDK personnel removing illegal advertisements on a lamp post in Klang. — KK SHAM/The Star KLANG Royal City Council (MBDK) has removed 8,850 illegal banners, bunting and posters – placed on trees, lamp posts, traffic lights and road signs – so far this year. MBDK Corporate Communi-cations Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said most of these advertisements involved property sale, transport rental, household renovations and moneylending services. 'Out of these illegal advertisements, 4,713 were unlicensed moneylenders or 'ah long' posters,' she said after an operation to remove illegal bunting near Jalan Tepi Sungai in the city. Norfiza said 60 phone numbers of loan sharks had been handed over to Malaysia Communications and Multi-media Commission (MCMC), which could terminate them under Section 263 (2) of Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. She said MBDK had a unit that went out each day to remove unlicensed advertisements, which marred the royal city's image and damaged trees. 'When a report is made about illegal advertisements, our enforcement team will respond within an hour or two,' said Norfiza. Last year, MBDK removed 11,587 illegal banners and bunting, including 5,087 loan shark-related advertisements, with 89 phone numbers referred to MCMC. Norfiza said the city council had also issued compounds to 117 businesses in relation to illegal advertisements up to July, following 98 operations. 'Advertisement By-law 2007 states that no person may erect any advertising sign or banner without prior written approval of MBDK. 'Owners of illegal advertisements could also be compounded up to RM1,000,' she said. Norfiza said flagrant disregard for the by-law also placed motorists at risk. 'Bunting tied to poles at traffic intersections obstruct motorists' view.' She added that these advertisements also hampered the view of pedestrians attempting to cross roads.

Close Cooperation Required In Tackling Social Ills Among Youth
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- Social ills among the country's youth require close cooperation between the community and the government to prevent them from spreading, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. He said that based on last year's statistics, rape and incest cases involving adolescents have increased, with 252 cases reported compared to 206 in 2023. 'Even more worrying is that nearly 91 per cent of these cases occurred with mutual consent between underage teenagers. 'The sharp rise in rape and incest cases among minors is very alarming. If left unchecked, the country may face a severe social emergency that could destroy the future of the younger generation,' he said here today. Mohd Na'im said this at the launch of the 2025 national-level Social Awareness Roadshow (J-KIS), which was also attended by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee. On the issue of depression among youths, Mohd Na'im said that if not addressed, it could lead to serious consequences, including contributing to suicide cases. He said records showed that such cases increased to 1,087 in 2023 from 981 in the previous year. At the same time, Mohd Na'im expressed the hope that the J-KIS programme launched today, and similar initiatives, could be expanded to create a lasting impact on society. Meanwhile, Sirajuddin said the J-KIS programme is aimed at enhancing knowledge and awareness among youths on social issues through engaging sessions.

Penang woman scammed out of RM600,000 after falling for fake investment scheme on Whatsapp
BUKIT MERTAJAM, July 30 — A 55-year-old woman recently became RM600,000 poorer after falling victim to a non-existent online investment scheme. Penang acting police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said preliminary investigations found that the woman, a retired clerk with a company in Bukit Minyak here, came across an advertisement for the investment on Facebook in May. 'She then clicked on the link and was contacted by a male suspect via WhatsApp before being added to a WhatsApp group. 'She was offered investments promising lucrative returns in a short period, depending on the amount of capital invested. The woman was told to download an application via the link given before she registered and began to invest,' he said in a statement today. He said that on July 11, the victim made six cash transactions totalling RM600,000 into six different company accounts and only realised she had been deceived when she failed to withdraw her profits. Mohd Alwi said the woman, who was instead told to make additional payments as a condition for withdrawal, then lodged a report at the Seberang Perai Tengah Police Headquarters. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama
