Man Utd take huge financial hit on Marcus Rashford after dropping asking price twice

Daily Mirror23-07-2025
Manchester United are sending Marcus Rashford out on loan to Barcelona, who will have the option to sign him for a much lower fee than the club originally wanted
Manchester United's desperation to get Marcus Rashford off their wage bill has seen them dramatically drop their valuation of the striker. Rashford is poised to join Barcelona on a season-long loan with an option to buy after being frozen out by Ruben Amorim at United.

Amorim's relationship with Rashford broke down in December when he was ejected from the United first-team squad. He was then sent out on loan to Aston Villa in January, and having resurrected his career with four goals and six assists in 17 appearances, Rashford set his sights on Barca.

The 27-year-old rejected a mega-money move to Saudi Arabia and has been waiting patiently for Barca and United to come to terms over a move. That has now happened and Rashford flew into the city earlier this week to complete the final stages of his move.

Barcelona have agreed to take Rashford on loan for the 2025/26 season with an option to make it permanent. Barca will pay the entirety of his wages after Rashford agreed to take a 15 per cent pay cut from his £325,000-a-week wages. They can also sign him for €30million (£26m).
Earlier this summer, United made it clear that they would happily sell Rashford to whichever club would stump up £40m. His contract with the club runs until June 2028, so their asking price wasn't outrageous, especially considering they believed he was worth £100m in April 2024 when Paris Saint-Germain were sniffing around.
United's rapidly sliding scale around Rashford just demonstrates the sourness around the forward since Amorim made up his mind. The England striker has been part of Amorim's so-called 'bomb squad' over the past few weeks, forced to train separately from the first team at Carrington.
Rashford and fellow unwanted players Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Tyrell Malacia have been arriving at the training ground post-5pm, when everyone else has already left. It is a brutal policy that doesn't have universal support inside the building but is designed to speed up their exits.
It may have played a part in securing Rashford's exit, while Sancho is also poised to leave for Juventus. But what is more likely to have done the trick is United's desperation to offload their high-earning players who Amorim had made clear have no future at the club.

Rashford was not Barcelona's first choice this summer. The Catalan giants had tried to sign Nico Williams from Athletic Club, but the move fell through. They also showed an interest in Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, but were put off by the Reds' transfer stance.
'I don't want to speak about players which are not in my team, but of course Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford are fantastic players,' manager Hansi Flick said earlier in the summer. 'I like them and we'll see what happens.'
Rashford will not be a guaranteed starter, either. He can play on the left of Barca's 4-3-3 formation, but will be aware that Raphinha has just enjoyed an incredible campaign in that position, while he will be a mere back-up to Robert Lewandowski at centre-forward.

Man Utd transfer news: Ruben Amorim makes Rasmus Hojlund admission as replacement targeted

Manchester United have signed three new players so far and plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected at Old Trafford before the transfer window slams shut Manchester United have strengthened their squad with two major signings so far this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo as they look to bounce back from their worst ever Premier League finish. ‌ United finished 15th last season and were particularly toothless in front of goal, with only Everton and the three sides that got relegated managing less league goals than their 44 strikes. Cunha and Mbeumo, meanwhile, netted 35 goals between them. ‌ They have also signed teenage full-back Diego Leon, while Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan and Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof have been released. And plenty more incomings and outgoings are expected before the transfer window slams shut. ‌ Amorim's Hojlund admission Ruben Amorim has admitted he cannot guarantee Rasmus Hojlund will stay at Old Trafford, with Manchester United looking to sign a new striker. Hojlund managed just four Premier League goals last season and has been linked with a move away, with Amorim keen to add more firepower. And when asked about Hojlund's future, Amorim said: "I'm really happy with Rasmus, but I don't know what is going to happen until the end of the market. "The important thing is that the strikers who are here are working really well, they are improving, they are helping the team and that's the most important thing. The important thing is that Rasmus is scoring goals. He's connecting really well with the team. He's improving. Again, I don't know what is going to happen until the market is closed." Hojlund makes transfer vow Rasmus Hojlund has insisted he is not concerned by Manchester United's pursuit of a new striker, claiming that any extra competition will "sharpen him". ‌ "I think the most important thing for me is just to keep working hard and stay focused and then obviously we'll see what happens," Hojlund said. "I think my plan is very clear and that's for me to stay and fight for my spot, whatever happens. "Competition is fine with me, it sharpens me. I'm more than ready. I'm feeling sharp, so I'm welcoming everything that comes. I think it's good with competition and it only sharpens the team." ‌ Sesko asking price RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko has emerged as Manchester United's top attacking target, with reports from Germany suggesting he could cost upwards of £70m. It is claimed that Sesko has a gentlemen's agreement with Leipzig that would let him leave for a fee between £60m and £70m plus add-ons, but that only applies to select clubs. Newcastle are also said to be interested in Sesko, with Alexander Isak keen to leave St James' Park.

Rwanda, Congo hold first meeting of joint oversight committee under peace deal

July 31 (Reuters) - Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo held the first meeting of a joint oversight committee on Thursday, taking a step toward implementing a peace deal agreed last month in Washington even as other commitments are yet to be fulfilled. The African Union, Qatar and the United States joined the meeting of the committee in Washington, which was established as a forum to deal with implementation and dispute resolution of the peace agreement. The deal in June between Rwanda and Congo marked a breakthrough in talks held by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, which aims to bring an end to fighting that has killed thousands and attracted billions of dollars of Western investment to a region rich in tantalum, gold, cobalt, copper, lithium and other minerals. In the Washington agreement, the two African countries pledged to implement a 2024 deal that would see Rwandan troops withdraw from eastern Congo within 90 days. It also said Congo and Rwanda would form a joint security coordination mechanism within 30 days and implement a plan agreed last year to monitor and verify the withdrawal of Rwandan soldiers within three months. Congolese military operations targeting the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a Congo-based armed group that includes remnants of Rwanda's former army and militias that carried out a 1994 genocide, are meant to conclude over the same timeframe. But 30 days from the signing has passed without a meeting of the joint security coordination mechanism, and operations targeting the FDLR and the withdrawal of Rwandan soldiers have yet to begin. The joint oversight committee meeting, due to meet within 45 days of the signing, was on schedule. Trump's senior Africa adviser, Massad Boulos, told reporters on Wednesday that the deal was not off track, adding that a meeting of the security mechanism was due to be announced in coming days. Asked about lack of progress on operations against the FDLR and withdrawal of Rwandan soldiers, Boulos said: "There was no timeline for that... if you look at the chronology of what we've been able to do since April, it's been extensive, and it's been very much on point and very much in line with our aspirations. So it's not off track in any way." But sources with knowledge of the negotiations recognised delays in the implementation of the deal, but added it was not yet threatening the deal as a whole. Military and diplomatic sources told Reuters that the parties in conflict, including armed groups as M23 and militia fighters known as Wazalendo, have strengthened their military presence on the front lines.

Txiki Begiristain leaves role as Manchester City director of foootball

Begiristain announced he would be leaving the club in October 2024 and Hugo Viana is set to take over his role ahead of the new season. The 60-year-old joined City back in 2012 and saw the club achieve 21 trophies during his reign, including seven Premier League titles, two FA Cups and their first Champions League. City will celebrate Begiristain's achievements around the Manchester derby on September 14, where he will be the special guest for the match. Begiristain spent seven years as Barcelona's technical director between 2003 and 2010 before joining City and played an important role during Pep Guardiola's time in Spain as well as in England. Guardiola previously said a part of him will leave when Begiristain decides to walk away. He said: 'Part of me is leaving, I would say. 'A friend of mine and one of the architects of one of the best teams ever from Barcelona, and now here.'
