Charholi residents object TP scheme, PCMC likely to reconsider decision
Residents of adjoining villages have warned of protests against the implementation of the TP scheme, said officials.
The civic body earlier this month decided to scrap the TP scheme on 380 hectares of land in Chikhali-Kudalwadi and go ahead with the scheme on 1,425 hectares of land in Charholi. However, since the decision there has been intense opposition from villagers from Charholi.
According to the officials, the villagers, as part of the protest, have announced a major agitation from Monday (May 26). This includes blocking municipal offices, voluntary closure of villages and a boycott tax campaign unless the TP schemes are completely scrapped, they said.
Former Mayor, Nitin Kalje of PCMC, who is leading the protest, said, 'All the residents of the village are against the decision of the TP scheme in the area. We have also informed MLA Mahesh Landge and informed him about our demand.'
'The protest will start from Monday until the decision is cancelled. Similar to Chikhali-Kudalwadi, the TP scheme in Charholi should be scrapped,' he said.
Shekhar Singh, municipal commissioner, said, 'I will visit the Charholi village and speak with the residents. We will explain to them what the TP scheme is and its benefits. Even after this if the citizens still oppose, the appropriate decision will be taken by the civic body.'
'No TP scheme can go ahead if there is too much opposition from the citizens, and we need their support,' he said.
As per officials, the TP scheme helps planned development and avoid chaotic growth and development. It also prevents inadequate resources for infrastructure, inadequate land for roads and insufficient data for planning. Besides, the scheme aims to re-organize plots, improve road connectivity, and ensure basic amenities are available in the area.

PCMC recovers 167cr property tax in amnesty period
Navi Mumbai: Panvel City Municipal Corporation recovered Rs 167 crore property tax paid by 60,082 property holders. Since the launch of the amnesty scheme, 37,519 property owners have taken 90% fine exemption with a day left (Aug 15) and collectively availed Rs 64.8 crore. A protest was held on Wednesday on the property tax. The scheme was effective from July 18 to Sept 20 but split into four tiers. Those clearing their outstanding property tax between Aug 16 and Aug 31 would get 75% rebate, between Sept 1 and Sept 10 would get 50% discount and from Sept 11 to Sept 20, a 25% waiver of the fine amount. Thousands hit the streets in Panvel to take part in a protest rally covering about 1 km between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and PCMC head office. Seven major political parties besides various social and other forums joined the protest terming the property tax levied as unlawful, impractical and intended to divert public attention. Kharghar Colony Forum president, Leena Garad, had appealed to the residents not to pay the property taxes even under the amnesty scheme. Later, leaders jointly handed over a memorandum to the PCMC chief, Mangesh Chitale. Talking to the media, Patil alleged that the ruling party had promised to not hike any tax for five years but started collecting the property tax with fine/interest. There is no rebate offered on the basic property tax but the amnesty scheme launched is only to provide relief on the fines/interest amounts. The parties have alleged that despite PCMC being a 'D' class municipal corporation, the property tax levied is equivalent to that of 'A' class civic body like Mumbai. Meat shops in Pune & Pimpri-Chinchwad to remain open on I-Day & Janmashtami
With neither the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) nor the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) ordering the closure of slaughterhouses or meat shops on Independence Day, meat shops in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will remain open as usual on August 15. The PCMC has over 1,200 meat and chicken shops in Pimpri-Chinchwad. While there are as many as 200 meat shop licence holders in the PMC jurisdiction. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) The decision comes amid a nationwide controversy sparked by some municipal corporations in the country ordering the closure of slaughterhouses and meat shops on August 15 and 16 on account of Independence Day and Janmashtami, respectively. In Maharashtra, similar directions from civic bodies in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Malegaon and Nagpur have triggered sharp (political) reactions. While some groups have come out in support of the closure as a symbolic gesture, others have criticised it as unnecessary and discriminatory. In Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, civic officials confirmed that no such order has been issued which means these shops will remain open as usual on Independence Day and Janmashtami. The absence of a closure order in these cities has been welcomed by traders who said that such restrictions directly affect their livelihoods. However, the broader debate over whether or not meat shops should remain closed on national holidays continues across the state. Sandip Khot, deputy commissioner of the PCMC, said that no such order has been issued or will be issued directing closure of meat shops in Pimpri-Chinchwad. 'Some municipal corporations in the state who had issued similar orders have scrapped the decision. All meat shops in the twin city will remain open as usual. Also, there is no slaughterhouse in the PCMC jurisdiction,' he said. The PCMC has over 1,200 meat and chicken shops in Pimpri-Chinchwad. While there are as many as 200 meat shop licence holders in the PMC jurisdiction. Whereas, the PCMC does not have a slaughterhouse and the slaughterhouse in the PMC area is closed due to non-compliance with pollution control norms. Dr Sarika Funde-Bhosale, chief veterinary officer, said, 'We have not issued any orders to keep meat shops or slaughterhouses closed in the city on Independence Day or Janmashtami. After news that meat shops would remain closed in other districts on August 15 went viral, several traders contacted us and requested that we refrain from issuing similar orders. However, the PCMC does not plan to keep meat shops or slaughterhouses closed,' she said.
