Our Place founder warns supermarket dupes will 'cause businesses to fail'
Ms Shahid launched the Los Angeles-based business with her husband in 2019, with Will Smith's Dreamers VC, Jay-Z's Marcy Venture Partners, and Gwyneth Paltrow among its early investors.
It specialises in kitchenware including pans designed to be non-toxic and non-stick, and collections created in complementary colours and aesthetics.
Widely-shared posts on social media, especially Instagram, have helped drive popularity of the brand in recent years – including a collaboration with actress and singer Selena Gomez.
Similar versions of bestselling products – namely the 'Always Pan' which currently sells for £125 – have recently launched in supermarkets including Aldi and Marks & Spencer with a lower price tag.
Ms Shahid told the PA news agency: 'Unfortunately I think it is incredibly harmful.
'When we started Our Place, my partner and I bootstrapped our savings and worked on the design for two years before we ever sold a single unit.
'And when multi-million dollar corporations come and they knock it off, with no regard for innovation, IP, small business, they are causing tremendous harm and it will cause a lot of businesses to fail, and it will destroy innovation.'
She said such companies are 'very skilled in the art of duplicity' which makes it difficult and costly for smaller brands to legally challenge.
But the businesswoman told PA that they were 'not able to guarantee that same level of detail and quality' with replica products.
'So we trust that, while not every consumer will see the difference, many will and many do,' she said, adding that shoppers often want to 'support brands that they believe in'.
A spokesman for Aldi said: 'For over 35 years we have championed customers by offering high quality exclusive products at the lowest possible prices.
'We go to great lengths to ensure that all our exclusive brand products are compliant with strict copyright laws and regulations.'
M&S has been contacted for comment.
Ms Shahid, who also co-founded the Malala Fund with Nobel Prize winner and campaigner Malala Yousafzai, said Our Place products are typically viewed as an 'accessible luxury'.
'Despite some of the cost-of-living challenges, people are investing in the home and kitchen,' she told PA.
'The first thing you do is maybe you go out a little bit less, but then you still want the joy and the nourishment and the connection, and home cooking is a really great way to do that.
'It feels like an everyday luxury… people are choosing products that will last, that will bring joy, and that will actually help them save money over time.'
Sales across the brand spiked by 92% over the first quarter of 2025 compared with the same period last year, and it has built more than a million active customers.
It is also set to launch a shop-in-shop space within London department store Selfridges amid efforts to expand into retailers and take on established competitors such as Le Creuset.
Ms Shahid said Our Place has 'a lot of younger consumers but we also have a lot of men and women in their 60s', while many of its products – including the countertop 'wonder oven' – appeal to single-person households and small families.

Comedian Reginald D Hunter appears in court over social media posts
Comedian Reginald D Hunter has appeared in court over alleged antisemitic social media posts. The 56-year-old US stand-up is accused of three counts of sending an offensive communication on three different occasions – on August 24, September 10 and September 11 last year – to Heidi Bachram on X, formerly Twitter. He spoke to confirm his personal details when he appeared at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday for the private prosecution, which is being brought by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) charity. It is alleged Hunter sent a computer-generated sexual image to Ms Bachram in August last year, with the charges claiming it was 'grossly offensive'. No indication of plea was given and Hunter was bailed to return for a hearing at the same court on November 14. Deputy district judge Louise Balmain told him: 'There is going to be an initial legal argument as to whether the case should proceed and that will take place on November 14.' The judge told Hunter to attend that hearing as he will learn if the case goes ahead and whether he will have to enter a plea. Hunter, whose address was given as care of Kalber Struckley solicitors, was released on unconditional bail. Hunter regularly tours the UK and has appeared on comedy panel shows Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Have I Got News For You and 8 Out Of 10 Cats. In an Instagram post published last week, Hunter said the CAA is 'dragging me to court for jokes online'. Hunter also declared he is 'fighting a private prosecution for my comedy' in a crowdfunding appeal launched to help cover legal fees. A total of £19,836 towards a £50,000 target had been pledged by the time he made his first appearance in court on Monday. The crowdfunder, aimed at raising money towards specialist counsel and any appeals procedures and court fees, states: 'Born in Georgia in 1969, Reginald has been a force in UK comedy since 1992. 'Known for his biting social commentary, he has appeared on Have I Got News For You, 8 Out of 10 Cats and was Perrier-nominated at Edinburgh Festival. 'Reginald challenges audiences on racism, politics, and religion. He is staunchly anti-War and has publicly criticised Israel in the past.' The CAA describes itself as an organisation of volunteers which works to 'expose and counter antisemitism through education and zero-tolerance enforcement of the law'. Stephen Silverman, the group's director of investigations and enforcement, previously said: 'This is one of a number of private prosecutions that we are bringing, and there will be more to say on the case in due course.'

BREAKING NEWS Angelina Jolie's neighborhood sees trespasser… after ex Brad Pitt had home broken into
Cops arrested a trespasser in a Los Angeles neighborhood that's home to A-listers including Angelina Jolie. On Sunday law enforcement detained an individual who entered the Los Feliz enclave by slipping through a gate. The unwelcome visitor had made it onto the street where Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard live when police caught up with him, according to TMZ. It was noted that the actress and actor were not home at the time. Insiders said that both security and residents called the police on the 'known' suspect, who tried to make a run for it before he was arrested. Footage shared on the public safety app Citizen showed officers on the scene, with the male trespasser briefly seen. The accused person reportedly did not break into any of the neighborhood's mansions, one of which belongs to actress Brie Larson. It comes shortly after Jolie's ex-husband Brad Pitt's home was broken into while he was in Tokyo. His neighbors have suggested security at the mansion may have been compromised in the days leading up to the dramatic break-in. They claim they had not seen an unmarked private patrol car normally stationed right outside the actor's driveway for several days before the raid. Pitt's home in Los Feliz was ransacked during a late-night burglary on June 25 while the 61-year-old star was overseas promoting his new film, F1: The Movie. It was the latest in a string of burglaries plaguing upscale neighborhoods across LA and Southern California, where celebrities have increasingly been hit. Locals told the Daily Mail the 24-hour security car had been a constant presence since Pitt bought the 2,100 sq ft home from an oil heiress in March 2023 — just a ten-minute walk from ex-wife Angelina 's $25 million estate. An aerial view of Pitt's home in Los Angeles But in the days before the break-in, the neighbor said they could not see the vehicle — or the guard inside it — leading them to speculate about laxer security measures. 'Ever since Mr Pitt moved in two years ago there was always a security car in the street, day and night,' said one neighbor, whose home overlooks Pitt's. 'It suddenly disappeared a few days before the burglary but we have no idea why.' By June 30, the regular security detail had returned, with a male guard seen sitting in a small black car outside the property — though he declined to speak to the Daily Mail. It appeared security had been bolstered, with a second vehicle, a black Prius, also parked at the top of Pitt's steep driveway. Earlier that day, neighbors spotted workmen from a glass installation company arriving at the house, believed to be replacing a window smashed by the intruders during the break-in.
