Amanda Holden says Cheryl 'must be kicking herself' after turning down BGT opportunity
Amanda Holden was a last-minute addition to the Britain's Got Talent judging panel after Cheryl Cole pulled out of the show, and she says Cheryl "must be kicking herself"
Amanda Holden has joked that Cheryl Cole"must be kicking herself" for passing up the opportunity to join the Britain's Got Talent judging panel.
Cheryl, a member of Girls Aloud, was initially offered a spot on the popular ITV show but withdrew from filming at the eleventh hour. Consequently, Simon Cowell, 65, turned to Amanda, 54, whom he later referred to as an "interesting booking" believing she would "fit the show perfectly".
Despite declining BGT, Cheryl, now 41, did team up with Simon on X Factor in 2014, taking over from Sharon Osbourne and staying for two seasons. On the Tea at Four podcast, Amanda disclosed that she was involved in an ITV drama when Simon approached her.
She remarked: "I was an actress to that point and I think Simon, it's famous that she asked Cheryl Cole to do it but she turned it down...I bet she's kicking herself. I love Cheryl, bless her, but she did go on to do X Factor.
"I think that was because I was in a drama called Wild At Heart and it was one of those classic Sunday night dramas, so Simon got me to do that.
"And from there I have just turned into a host and presenter and I don't really act anymore really," reports Belfast Live.
Simon has recently lauded Amanda as the "queen" of Britain's Got Talent, noting that she "loves" watching the acts perform.
He revealed: "That's her, she honestly loves it. You know, every time I talk to her it makes me laugh because I say: 'You are loving this, aren't you?'
"Because there are days where I'm knackered and there's still an hour to go. And I'm like, wow, it's been a long day, and she's like, 'yeah, but it's brilliant, isn't it?' She is our Britain's Got Talent queen and she deserves that crown."
The music impresario shared: "And you know what? She was an interesting booking because we'd offered the role to Cheryl Cole, as she was known in those days.
"A week before filming, she calls me and goes: 'I just can't do it', and wouldn't give me a reason. I think she was freaked out. We literally had two judges and a week to book someone.
"I just knew it had to be Amanda because I'd met her and I really liked her, she was very funny and I just thought she'd fit the show perfectly. Fast forward 18 years and she's still a huge success and we have become great friends. I do consider her one of my best friends."
Britain's Got Talent is set to air tonight (Saturday, May 3) on ITV One at 7pm, with Amanda and Simon joined by fellow judges Bruno Tonioli and Alesha Dixon, all eager to see which act will triumph in the semi-final.

Sue Cleaver reflects on '25 years of laughs' after Coronation Street exit
Eileen Grimshaw had a special send-off during Friday's episode of the soap, where she was seen leaving for Thailand alongside her son Jason Grimshaw, played by Ryan Thomas. Simon Gregson's character Steve McDonald, Tony Maudsley's George Shuttleworth, and Eileen's son Todd, played by Gareth Pierce, all said goodbye to the matriarch before drivers from the local taxi firm honked their horns as she was driven off. In an Instagram post, Cleaver said: 'Well… that's a wrap. 25 years of laughs, tears, costumes, chaos — and one unforgettable journey. A post shared by Sue Cleaver (@officialsuecleaver) 'I'll miss this character like crazy, but what a ride it's been. Thank you for every moment.' Cleaver has played the outspoken and uncomplicated Eileen in the ITV show since 2000. Eileen came to Weatherfield to work at the local taxi firm, Streetcars, to provide for her two tearaway teenage children, Jason and Todd. She soon became friends with her boss Steve and came into conflict with Helen Worth's character Gail Rodwell (also known as Gail Platt). Cleaver took part in I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022, where she opened up about reconciling with her birth mother, and was eliminated third. She also said her family is 'bizarrely interconnected' to other Coronation Street stars, including Worth who is godmother to one of her half-sisters, while her other half-sister's husband, John Bowe, appeared on the cobbles as Duggie Ferguson. In 2024, she released a book A Work In Progress in which she discusses how she feels she is not past her prime. In recent years she has appeared as a panellist on ITV chat show Loose Women.

Coronation Street fans slam Eileen Grimshaw's ‘ridiculous' exit as she waves goodbye to the cobbles after 25 years
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CORONATION Street fans were left baffled by Eileen Grimshaw's emotional farewell tonight after 25 years. Eileen, played by Sue Cleaver, told her heartbroken boyfriend George she didn't love him anymore before hopping in a cab with son Jason and announcing: 'I'm moving to Thailand.' Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 4 Eileen was greeted to a big treat by the Street Cars drivers Credit: ITV 4 She left behind an emotional George after breaking up with him 4 Eileen declared 'I'm moving to Thailand' A cheery Eileen was waved off outside the Rovers after a few drinks with her Streetcars co-workers Steve and Tim. Eileen was greeted to a big treat by the Street Cars drivers, who beeped as she drove away. George was left in tears, having confronted Eileen with his suspicions that she wasn't attracted to him anymore. George was due to fly to Thailand with Eileen - and fans couldn't believe he'd throw away the money he spent on the ticket. Others slammed the idea of Eileen as a barmaid in Thailand, and moving halfway across the world on a whim. 'It's hilarious how they make moving so simple in soaps… 'She couldn't just up and leave to live permanently in Thailand without the correct visa,' one fan wrote. 'Can't see Eileen as a Thai barmaid,' another added, while a third joked: 'Seems they're giving Eileen a boring, miserable exit!' Long-time viewers also felt the storyline was a letdown compared to Eileen's dramatic past. 'Remember when Eileen got her head stuck in the railings? This has been mostly dull and miserable — which sums up Eileen in recent years,' one fan said. Even George's tearful goodbye was mocked, as one said:'George! You're not a murderer, a liar, thief, womaniser… that's why Eileen isn't interested in you, hon!' She also made the decision to make a fresh start in Thailand after being worn down by being suspected in her sister Julie's tragic death. In Friday's episode, Eileen's mind is turned to leaving the cobbles after hearing Theo's impassioned speech to his daughter Millie. Theo explains to his teenage daughter, that he can't return to live with her mum, his ex, because "it didn't feel right," after realising he was attracted to men and wanted to see where is his relationship with Todd went. George realised how Theo's speech moved Eileen and went to confront her after she'd been at the police who had just cleared her of any wrongdoing in Julie's death. The Sun exclusively revealed in January that she had quit the show after 25 years on the Salford set to look for new acting opportunities. 'The door is still firmly open but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly,' she explained. One of Sue's major next steps is to become a a regular panellist on Loose Women after first appearing on the daytime panel show in 2023. Sue took a break from Corrie last year to star in Sister Act The Musical as Mother Superior and appeared in reality show I'm A Celebrity in 2022. Last year, Sue released her memoir A Work In Progress and revealed she was embracing being in her 60s.
