Workshop sensitizes police on handling child rape cases

The initiative—jointly organised by the Lucknow Police Commissionerate, Chetna NGO, and HCL Foundation—aimed to foster a more empathetic and child-friendly approach among the police.
The training saw participation from 250 traffic police personnel and 50 officers from the Crime Against Women wing. It was conducted under the guidance of the Police Commissioner and direct supervision of DCP (Traffic) Kamlesh Kumar Dixit.
The workshop featured interactive sessions led by Sanjay Gupta, Director of Childhood Enhancement through Training and Action (CHETNA), who moderated discussions on child protection policies and shared ground-level experiences. Representatives from the Chief Medical Officer's office, media, and traffic police also took part. Sanjay Gupta emphasised that whenever officers encounter children in distress they must inform Childline by dialling 1098.

On the occasion, a special display of the "Nanhé Parindé" mobile van was presented, and 20 children participated to share their real-life experiences. A child-composed song on the POCSO Act, supported by Chetna NGO, was also released during the event.
Dr Jyoti Kamle, Deputy CMO of the District Main Hospital, explained the govt's SOPs for handling child sexual assault cases.
DCP (Traffic) Kamlesh Kumar Dixit highlighted how traffic personnel are often the first to come across vulnerable children—whether begging or working in exploitative conditions—and how such training helps officers act more effectively and humanely.
Joint Commissioner of Police Babloo Kumar advised traffic officers to make the most of non-peak hours by interacting with children found working in shops.

1 2 Bhubaneswar: BJD on Monday called for a six-hour hartal in Puri on Thursday, demanding justice for the 15-year-old girl who died from burn injuries at AIIMS Delhi on Saturday. The party alleged she was murdered despite family members and police stating it was a case of self-immolation. Following her death on Saturday, her father reiterated that she took her own life due to family-related stress. The family also urged that her death should not be politicised. BJD, however, alleged the police pressurised the girl and her family to call her death a suicide. "We still believe she was murdered. Mystery shrouds the circumstances leading to her father's claim that she killed herself. Police and govt must have applied pressure on the family. We want justice for her," Samantaray said. Unfortunately, she could not be saved. The family is very poor. Our govt will provide all necessary support and assistance to the family," she added. Responding to the opposition demands for her resignation, Parida stated, "If my resignation helps to bring the girl back to life, I am ready to quit 100 times. The opposition should know that our govt ensures quick and expeditious action against perpetrators. Justice and action had vanished during their rule."

After 50 C-sections in 10 years, doc with fake degree lands in cop net
1 2 Guwahati/Silchar: A fake doctor, who performed atleast 50 C-section and gynaecological surgeries over a decade at two private hospitals in Silchar , has finally landed in police net after being caught in the act. The accused, Pulok Malakar, was produced before a local court on Monday, which remanded him in five-day police custody. He was arrested a day earlier. Malakar, claimed to possess an MBBS degree and a CDM Pune qualification. CDM Pune refers to a certificate in disaster management course offered through distance and open learning. Malakar is the 50th fake doctor caught in the state under an initiative of one Dr Abhijit Neog, who is now the vigilance officer of the anti-quackery cell under the Assam Council of Medical Registration. While fake doctors have been caught from various parts of the state over the years, including the capital Guwahati, the arrest of Malakar was the first case where a fake doctor was apprehended for conducting major surgeries. The quack was nabbed while performing a caesarean section at a private hospital in Silchar. "From a reliable source, our cell got the information that he was performing a surgery at the hospital," Dr Neog told TOI on Monday. Prior to the arrest, a zero FIR was lodged by Dr Neog on July 30 at the CID police station in Guwahati. He said prior to lodging the FIR, the anti-quackery cell, after investigation, found that Malakar did not have any medical qualification. "He does not have a valid registration number as a doctor. CDM is a six-month correspondence course offered by IGNOU and has nothing to do with medical science," Dr Neog added. Police sources revealed that Malakar submitted certificates claiming to have medical qualifications from the Odisha Council of Medical Registration and Utkal University. However, preliminary verification suggests that the documents were dubious and not legally tenable. Officials said the conditions of the patients operated on by Malakar will be examined following the seizure of hospital records. Sources said while tea gardens, semi-urban, and rural areas are vulnerable to the menace of fake doctors, the recent arrest of several quacks from Guwahati raised concern among the patients in the state capital as well. It may be noted that the hospital from where Malakar was nabbed on Sunday evening was founded in 1931, one of the oldest in Silchar. This hospital has a long-standing reputation for serving the poor and underprivileged in the northeast, especially women and children. The exposure of such a serious lapse has dented the hospital's credibility and raised questions about oversight and verification protocols, officials said.

To stop teacher from joining protest, Bathinda cops enter classroom, stay for 6 hours
Bathinda: A police team entered a pre-primary classroom at a govt school in Punjab's Bathinda town on Monday to prevent a teacher from participating in a protest for regularisation of services to be held nearly 150 km away in Ludhiana. The uniformed officers remained in the classroom for six hours, from 8am until the school's closing at 2 pm, despite the presence of three to six-year-old children. Veerpal Kaur Sidhana, the teacher (associate 'adhyapak'), said she had no plans to attend any protest in Ludhiana, where Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann was addressing a public meeting. Sidhana is the state president of the Shaheed Kiranjit Kaur Pre-Primary Associate Adhyapak Union, Punjab. According to Sidhana, police personnel arrived at her residence at 6am and then accompanied her to the Government Middle School at Hazi Rattan by 8am. Before entering the classroom, officers allegedly demanded her phone, a request she refused. Three cops, including two female constables, then remained inside her classroom. While there is no legal bar on police entering a school in uniform or a classroom, the manner and duration of the Bathinda officers' presence have drawn criticism. The Democratic Teacher Front (DTF) state president, Digvijay Pal Sharma, said, "It is an unthinkable act of the police. At least they could have avoided reaching the classroom where small kids get education." After school hours, teachers lodged a formal protest with the Bathinda senior superintendent of police (SSP) Amneet Kondal. "No order was issued to go to the school. The cops entered the classroom on their own. Stern action will be taken against all of them, including the SHO," the SSP said. Sidhana's union represents around 6,000 associate teachers across the state who teach pre-primary classes. These teachers, converted from volunteers under various schemes in July 2023, currently earn Rs 19,845 per month. "We are demanding the regularisation of our services and all the emoluments, according to pay scales eligible to regular teachers," Sidhana said. "For it, we have been holding a struggle for over a decade, and in July 2023, the govt made claims to regularise our services, but in reality, nothing such was done as only our wages were enhanced."
