2 varsity students among 3 fined for having porn on handphones
KOTA BHARU : Three men, including two university students, were fined between RM3,000 and RM4,000 in the magistrates' court here today after they pleaded guilty to possessing pornographic videos and images on June 18.
Al Azamuddin Al Fadzil, 22, and Syahmi Firas Jurij, 27, were fined RM4,000 each, while Hanafi Ibrahim, 47, was fined RM3,000 after pleading guilty to the charges read separately to them before magistrate Wan Izzat Wan Abdullah.
The trio were charged with possessing pornographic images and videos on their mobile phones at a house at Jalan Kemumin in Kampung Pulau Belacan, Panchor, here at 1.15am on June 18.
They were charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to three years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutors Nadzir Abdullah and Nur Haziqah Hassan prosecuted, while the accused were represented by lawyer Chong Yin Xin.
Earlier, Nadzir and Haziqah requested the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a lesson to society, considering the accused's immoral actions and violation of public norms.
However, Chong requested that her clients be given the minimum possible fine because they had repented and promised to change.
'My client Hanafi has a health problem and underwent brain surgery in 2016. He is currently supported by his sister, who is a person with disabilities and working in a restaurant.
'Al Azamuddin is a first-year university student, and Syahmi is a final-year university student. Their families are also present in court and have promised to guide them after this,' she said.

(Website pic) PETALING JAYA : Zetrix AI Bhd, formerly known as MyEG Services Bhd, has been allowed to continue providing immigration-related services despite the immediate termination of its agreement with the immigration department. In a bourse filing, Zetrix AI said it received a letter from the home ministry today clarifying that the company could continue to offer immigration-related services within the scope of any other agreement with the government. It said it had a teaming agreement with Heitech Padu Bhd, which was awarded the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) project, under which immigration-related services, including foreign worker permits, were within the NIISe project scope. 'The suite of immigration-related services provided by the company continues to be accessible to customers through its platform,' it said. The company also said it expected minimal disruption and no material impact on its financial performance following this development. On July 15, it was reported that Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd fined seven of Zetrix AI's directors RM150,000 each for failing to ensure three company announcements in 2023 were factual and accurate. Bursa said Zetrix AI announced on July 7, 2023, among other things, that a notification letter dated July 4, 2023 from the home ministry confirmed the finance ministry's approval of the company's appointment as the government revenue collection agent and extended its role as the provider of online services for the immigration department. It said the July 7 announcement was inaccurate, false and misleading as it was inconsistent with the contents of the July 4 letter. It said Zetrix AI and the directors also failed to make an immediate announcement to clarify the inconsistency, but maintained its misrepresentation of matters in the company's subsequent announcements on Sept 13 and Sept 14 that year. On July 15, it was reported that Zetrix AI would seek a judicial review against Bursa over the penalty imposed on its directors.

7 foreigners charged with kidnapping Bangladeshi businessman
The seven were charged in the Kuala Lumpur magistrates' court under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961, which provides for a sentence of between 30 and 40 years' imprisonment, as well as caning, upon conviction. PETALING JAYA : Seven foreign men were brought before the Kuala Lumpur magistrates' court today to face a charge of kidnapping a Bangladeshi businessman last month. The accused comprised Bangladeshi nationals Sohel Rana, 40, and Sahajahan, 37, and Myanmar nationals Abdul Majid Abdul Malik, 25, Soforodin Fozol Korim, 25, Mokhtar Huson Zaher Huson, 26, Ismail Azita Rahman, 23, and Arafat Hussein Jamal Mustafa, 24. All seven nodded in understanding after the charge was read to them before magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim, Bernama reported. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. The seven are accused of jointly abducting a 47-year-old Bangladeshi man with the intent of demanding ransom, in front of a mosque in Sentul at about 11.30pm on June 26. They were charged under Section 3(1) of the Kidnapping Act 1961, which provides for a sentence of between 30 and 40 years' imprisonment, as well as caning, upon conviction. The court fixed Oct 2 for next mention of the case. Deputy public prosecutor Iman Nurhidayah Ezani appeared for the prosecution, while counsel K Komagan represented Sohel Rana. The other six accused were unrepresented.

2,400 vapes, related components found in Singapore-bound lorry at Tuas Checkpoint

In a statement on Facebook on July 30, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said it foiled the smuggling attempt made via a Malaysia-registered lorry. The lorry was carrying cargo declared as precast products. Based on information received by ICA's Integrated Targeting Centre (ITC), ICA officers directed the vehicle for enhanced checks. The vapes and related components were found hidden inside the lidded compartment of a flat plate, which was on top of the trailer chassis. A chassis is an undercarriage structure that supports a vehicle's other components, such as the engine and wheels. The case was referred to the Health Sciences Authority for further investigation. The ITC is a new unit under ICA that uses data analytics to identify high-risk foreigners before their arrival. These foreigners are flagged for more stringent checks at immigration. A total of 33,100 foreigners were denied entry in 2024 after being found to pose immigration or security risks to the nation, according to figures released in February. From January 2024 to March 2025, HSA seized $41 million worth of vapes – nearly fivefold the reported value of vapes seized from 2019 to end-2023, according to numbers compiled by The Straits Times. The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Home Affairs said in a joint statement on July 12 that they are looking at enhancing laws around vaping. On July 20, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said that both ministries are working together to list etomidate, which is increasingly being abused through vapes, under the Misuse of Drugs Act. With etomidate listed as a Class C drug under the Act, the authorities will be able to take tougher actions against suppliers and users of vapes with the drug. Since July 21, HSA has extended operating hours for its Tobacco Regulation Branch hotline on 6684-2036 or 6684-2037 to report vaping-related offences.
