Efficiency key to AJ Auxerre's success this season
Thanks to its dynamic attack, AJ Auxerre will be playing top-flight football beyond this season.
The 2023-24 Ligue 2 champions have officially survived relegation this time around and could earn as many as 50 points in the top flight for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign (71).

Despite being one of the newcomers to Ligue 1, the Burgundy club has not shown any signs of intimidation against the experienced sides at this level, as Christophe Pélissier's men have often attempted to play on the front foot.
His attacking approach has been rewarded, with Auxerre netting 46 goals in Ligue 1 through 32 matchdays. That's their highest total to this stage of a top-flight season since 2003-04, when they scored 48 times after 31 league fixtures.
That season, they were aided by the brilliance of Djibril Cissé, who finished the campaign with 26 league goals, as AJA finished fourth and claimed a place in the UEFA Cup, today known as the Europa League.
Auxerre have had two stars step up in Bournemouth loanee Hamed Traoré (25) and Gaëtan Perrin (28), scoring 10 and nine goals, respectively, in 32 league fixtures.

While Perrin, Lassine Sinayoko (25), and Traoré have been among the top providers, this team have been middle of the pack regarding big chances created, according to FotMob, sitting 13th with 63. At the same time, AJA have been decisive when scoring opportunities have presented themselves, with the fewest big chances missed in Ligue 1 after 31 matchdays per FotMob.
In 2024-25, Auxerre have scored in 25 encounters and have only been shut out on seven occasions.

Michael Owen admits Premier League rival had him 'fearing for his career'
Michael Owen said that the Brazilian Ronaldo left him feeling as though he had "no chance" at the top level — despite Owen himself being one of the most prodigious teenagers England has ever produced. Advertisement Owen burst onto the scene as a teenager in the 1990s and went on to win the Ballon d'Or in 2001 after Liverpool won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup in the same season. His brilliance for Liverpool saw Real Madrid swoop in for him in 2004, where Owen became teammates with Ronaldo, a player he had previously marveled at when watching him on television. Owen appeared on talkSPORT this week and was asked to build his perfect player from his former teammates, and he chose Ronaldo as one of the players due to his speed. There were also mentions for former Liverpool players Robbie Fowler and Emile Heskey. Selecting Fowler for his brilliant left foot, Owen said: "Robbie Fowler, pure finisher, he struck the ball so neatly, just thuds it with loads of power, short backlift, great finisher and great left foot. "Some people are great at certain things, but Robbie was brilliant at virtually everything, he was just a natural finisher, he knew exactly where the goal was, he didn't even have to look." Owen chose Heskey for his strength, saying: "Emile Heskey was great, everything I couldn't do he could do, we just fit perfectly. Owen went on to name Arsenal legend Thierry Henry as the best Premier League player of all time. The Frenchman made 258 appearances in the English top flight., scoring 175 times and registering 73 assists 'I got into the Premier League at 17 and won the Golden Boot and then won it again at 18,' Owen said. File Photo by Vince Mignott/EPA-EFE June 6 (UPI) -- Arsenal signed Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes to a four-year contract extension, the Premier League soccer franchise announced Friday. "It's an amazing club," Gabriel told the team website. "I'm so proud to sign a new contract. I love this club. I love the fans, my teammates, I love this stadium. "I'm so proud. Thank you for all the support." Gabriel, 27, joined the Gunners in 2020. He helped anchor a defense that allowed the fewest goals (34) in the Premier League for the second consecutive season in 2024-25. He also contributed 20 goals over 210 career appearances for the Gunners. The veteran center back made his senior career debut in 2016 for Brazil's Avai. He also played for Lille of France's Ligue 1 before loans to Ligue 2 club Troyes and Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb. "I arrived here as a young player and it's almost five years at this club," Gabriel said. "I've learned a lot here. I'm so proud of myself as well to have worn the captain's armband. It's an amazing journey. "I'm so happy to continue this journey and hopefully win some trophies for this club." The Gunners (20-4-14) finished second in the 2024-25 Premier League standings, 10 points behind first-place Liverpool (25-4-9). Gabriel sustained a hamstring injury during an April 1 win over Fulham and missed the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign, but said he expects to be healthy for next season. "It's going very well," Gabriel said of his recovery. "It was a bit difficult for me, but I know it's time to recharge. I'm feeling much better now and I'm so excited for next season." The Gunners will take on AC Milan in a friendly July 23 in Singapore.
