Legend of Aang delayed to October 2026 as TMNT sequel moves to 2027

Express Tribune16-05-2025
Paramount Pictures has shifted its release schedule for several major animated films.
The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, the highly anticipated follow-up to the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender series, will now debut on October 9, 2026, instead of the originally planned January 30 date. The film will feature voice talents Dave Bautista, Steven Yeun, and Eric Nam, with Lauren Montgomery and William Mata directing.
The animated feature takes place years after the 2005 Nickelodeon series, which followed Aang, a 12-year-old Avatar mastering all four elements to save the world from the Fire Nation. The delay is expected to give more time for post-production and enhance fan expectations.
Meanwhile, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 has also been delayed. Previously slated for October 9, 2026, it will now hit theaters on September 17, 2027. Directed by Jeff Rowe and produced by Point Grey Pictures, the sequel follows the success of 2023's Mutant Mayhem. To bridge the two films, a spinoff series titled Tales of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will launch on Paramount+, with original voice actors Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon returning.
On a more positive scheduling note, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie will now release one week earlier, on July 24, 2026. The voice cast includes Jameela Jamil, Terry Crews, Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, and Bill Nye. The film is produced by Spin Master Entertainment and Nickelodeon Movies.
These changes reflect Paramount's evolving animation strategy and the growing demand for expanded universes in family-friendly franchises.

Drake Bell finalises divorce from Janet Von Schmeling two years after separation

Drake Bell is officially proceeding with his divorce from Janet Von Schmeling, two years after the couple first separated. Court records confirm that the Drake & Josh actor filed documents in Seminole County, Florida, on Thursday to move the process forward. Von Schmeling originally filed for divorce in Los Angeles in April 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. At the time, she revealed that she and Bell had separated in September 2022 and requested legal and physical custody of their child, along with spousal support. Her filing came one week after Bell was briefly reported missing and later located. Bell's representative, Juan José Rovirosa, issued a statement explaining the development: "At this stage, both of them are simply concluding that legal process. Their priority remains the safety and wellbeing of their son, and they are doing so from a place of love and respect.' Bell married Von Schmeling in 2018 but did not publicly confirm the marriage until 2021, when he also revealed that they share a son together. Earlier this year, Bell shared in an interview that he has a new girlfriend but admitted balancing a relationship is challenging while touring. The actor has remained in the spotlight through personal and professional revelations, including his participation on The Masked Singer as the Ice King and his role in the docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, where he identified himself as a survivor of abuse at Nickelodeon.

Anna Faris and Regina Hall to return for new ‘Scary Movie' reboot from the Wayans brothers

Anna Faris and Regina Hall are set to reprise their iconic roles in a new installment of the Scary Movie franchise. Marlon Wayans confirmed the news on Instagram, sharing a nostalgic image of the two stars from the original 2000 film. The reboot is scheduled to hit theaters on June 12, 2026. This new project marks a major reunion for the Wayans brothers — Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory — who are returning to write and produce the film, their first collaboration on the franchise in 18 years. Rick Alvarez is also attached as a producer. Miramax is backing the production, with Paramount Pictures set to distribute the film globally as part of their first-look deal. -Instagram. The Scary Movie series originally launched in 2000 and quickly became one of the highest-grossing R-rated horror comedies of all time. The debut film opened with a then-record $42.5 million for an R-rated horror film and for a film directed by a Black filmmaker. Keenen Ivory Wayans directed the first two films, while Marlon and Shawn Wayans wrote and starred in them. The upcoming film will be the sixth in the franchise and is being framed as a true revival. Miramax had previously explored developing a reboot without the Wayans' involvement, even offering Marlon Wayans a cameo — an offer he declined. Speaking to Variety, Wayans criticized the original deal made with Miramax, calling it 'toxic,' and claimed that the studio essentially 'stole' the franchise from his family. Miramax's new head, Jonathan Glickman, reportedly shifted course after reviewing the initial reboot script, which he felt lacked authenticity. Seeking to recapture the original spirit of the series, Glickman approached the Wayans family directly. Following their pitch, he agreed to a new deal that gave the brothers increased creative control and equity in the project. 'You need to have some connective tissue with the original property,' Glickman told Variety, emphasizing the importance of legitimacy over simply capitalizing on nostalgia.

Is a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film still in the works? Paramount responds

Paramount Pictures is pressing ahead with a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, adapting the acclaimed and darker storyline The Last Ronin. The project remains in development, sources have confirmed, alongside the already scheduled animated sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, due for release on September 172027. The Last Ronin, a five-issue comic published by IDW between 2020 and 2022, was written by Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz from a story by Eastman and Peter Laird. Set in a grim future, the narrative follows the final surviving Ninja Turtle as he seeks vengeance for his fallen brothers by confronting the grandson of Shredder. The storyline exists in its own 'Roninverse' continuity, originating from a 1987 outline by Eastman and Laird. The comic earned widespread praise for its mature tone, emotional depth, and distinctive artwork. It has since expanded into follow-up series The Last Ronin – Lost Years and The Last Ronin II – Re-Evolution, with a video game also in development. Paramount officially announced the live-action adaptation in April 2024. Walter Hamada, known for The Conjuring and It, is producing via 18hz, with Tyler Burton Smith penning the script. The film is expected to carry an R rating, reflecting the source material's intensity. Deadline recently noted the film's continued progress, though without naming The Last Ronin directly. Rumours have linked director James Wan, creator of Saw and Insidious, to the project, given his background in atmospheric and high-stakes storytelling. A release date remains to be confirmed.
