Phillies Move Hints at New Bryce Harper Replacement After Injury Setback
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies earned a much-needed win in extra innings on Monday night. The team entered the game on a five-game losing streak. But with franchise ace Zack Wheeler on the mound, the Phillies turned things around to open their series against the Chicago Cubs. Unfortunately, it won't be easy for the Phillies to keep it up after first baseman Bryce Harper suffered a significant setback on his persistent wrist injury. "Bryce Harper played through lingering pain in his right wrist from May through the end of the season last year," Paul Casella wrote for "With the same issue having popped up once again, Harper and the Phillies are taking a different approach in 2015. The club placed Harper on the 10-day injured list." (Photo by) More Blinch/Getty After Harper missed five games with an elbow injury, the Phillies will be without his bat until at least Monday. Initially, the team called up prospect Otto Kemp to play third base while moving Alec Bohm to fill in for Harper's position at first. But Destiny Lugardo of Phillies Nation observed that Kemp was taking reps at first base with infield coach Bobby Dickerson ahead of the team's Tuesday game with the Cubs. Those reps could hint at plans the team has to move Kemp to first in Harper's absence, a position he's played in a dozen Triple-A games this season. It could also merely be a way of keeping Kemp ready to replace Bohm in case he's injured. But if the team feels Kemp can handle the role, it would give the team a chance to move Bohm back to third base or to give Edmundo Sosa a start in the hot corner. MLB power rankings: Free-falling Phillies now stuck without Bryce Harper
The Philadelphia Phillies can't win. And Bryce Harper can't swing. Once comfortably perched atop the National League East, the Phillies are in danger of losing touch with the New York Mets and falling into a deep thicket of NL playoff contenders. Advertisement With nine losses in their past 10 games and franchise slugger Harper tossed on the injured list with a recurring wrist injury, the free-falling Phillies have dropped three spots in USA TODAY Sports' power rankings. Sunday, they were swept in Pittsburgh for the first time since June 2015 and now trail the Mets by four games. Next in town? The dynamic Chicago Cubs, neck-and-neck with the Mets for the NL's best record. A look at our updated rankings: Bryce Harper had an .814 OPS before going on the injured list. 1. Philadelphia Phillies (-3) After giving up 20 runs in two starts, Jesús Luzardo wonders if tipping pitches is to blame. 9. Houston Astros (+3) Jeremy Peña trails only Aaron Judge in AL WAR. 10. St. Louis Cardinals (-1) When it's going well: Yoshinobu Yamamoto shuts them down, but they somehow prevail. 11. Tampa Bay Rays (+6) That's 14 wins in 18 games and what's this, a playoff race? Louis Varland leads AL pitchers with 32 appearances – yet has a 0.99 WHIP. Brandon Woodruff's rehab road hits bump after he's struck in elbow by 108-mph line drive. George Springer's 2025 OPS-plus: 138. In 2024: 91. 15. Cleveland Guardians (-5) They sink to 24th in runs scored, once again imperiling good work of pitching staff. Jac Caglianone's Kauffman Stadium debut Tuesday against Yankees. George Kirby halts a five-game skid by striking out career-high 14. 18. Cincinnati Reds (+1) Christian Encarnacion-Strand returns from IL with a bang, homering in consecutive games. 19. Texas Rangers (-1) Jacob deGrom dominating, offense flailing. Phillies' Bryce Harper 'Can't Really Function' With Current Wrist Injury
Phillies' Bryce Harper 'Can't Really Function' With Current Wrist Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the Philadelphia Phillies continue their intrastate series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, they'll be without the face of the franchise. Advertisement First baseman Bryce Harper has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Friday, with right wrist inflammation. And according to the slugger, it sounds more severe than any Philly fan would've liked to hear. "It got to the point where I can't really function on a baseball field or hit a baseball," Harper said before Saturday's game. "It's a good time for me to take some time and get it right." Harper largely echoed manager Rob Thomson's thinking with that answer. Thomson said Friday that anything involving the hands or feet is concerning and wouldn't be something the club overlooks. Bryce Harper has made an enormous impact on the Phillies' lineup when healthy. Just like in past seasons, the offense has struggled to score without Ross-Imagn Images Harper went on to confirm that this injury is the same issue he dealt with throughout last season. This time around, it started early and hasn't gone away. Advertisement "(I) felt it early in the season and tried to play through it as long as I could," Harper said. "Just trying to get through it the best I can. It's going to take some time (to heal)." Harper did not offer any timetable on when he could return. The first day he's eligible to do so is Monday, June 16, when the Phillies travel to Miami. Shortly after that, the New York Mets come to Philadelphia for three games from June 20-22. The Phillies would like to get him back for a series that will have major implications for the National League East Division race. Harper is slashing .258/.368/.446 with nine home runs, 13 doubles and 34 RBIs. Prospect Otto Kemp, who made his major league debut Saturday, is holding Harper's spot on the roster for now.
