Gladiators star Steel reveals medical procedure contributed to newborn son death

Metro3 days ago
Gladiators star Zack George, aka TV athlete Steel, has shared how he believes a medical procedure contributed to the death of his newborn son.
The BBC star, 35, and wife Samantha George welcomed son Leo earlier this year, who was born 23 weeks premature.
Tragically, the infant died 13 days later, as his condition took a grave turn.
Described by George as 'one hell of a strong boy,' the issues began when Leo was taken off his ventilator and placed on CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), a non-invasive way of keeping airways open.
It was during this procedure that it is believed accidental damage was done to his windpipe.
Later suffering from brain bleeds, a hole in his heart, and collapsing lungs, air pockets also began to form around little Leo's lungs.
George told The Mirror: 'Around the tenth day, they started getting a bit bigger. They came to the conclusion that when they tubed him, either the first or the second time, they created a hole in his windpipe. It's no one's fault; a baby that young is really fragile—it's just a risk.'
He continued: 'That was really hard, because if it hadn't happened, he would probably still be here. A 23-week-old baby has so much to do. Overnight, he got quite bad; that's when we went in, and he passed away.'
With Leo already having been through so much, the parents decided against CPR.
On April 8, George shared the sad news in a post to his Instagram account. Posting a picture of himself and Samantha cradling their son, he wrote: 'Your mummy brought you into this world and your daddy held you as you left ♥️
'Leo…… you showed us what the true definition of strength is and we are so proud of you.
'You brought so much positivity to the world with the short time you were with us and we felt that positivity in abundance, we thank you all so much for that.
'Although you were only with us for a short time, you brought us a lifetime of love. Thank you for letting us know that YOU had had enough of this fight. We will forever be grateful that we didn't have to make that decision for you 💔
'Leo our lion, we love you more than you will ever know.
'Rest easy our little boy 🦁🦁🦁'.
In the comments below, George's Gladiators co-stars paid tribute to the family's loss.
'RIP baby Leo 💔🕊️ Thoughts and prayers are with you both,' wrote Montell Douglas, who plays Gladiator Fire.
'So sorry!! Forever here for you guy!!' said Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, AKA Nitro.
Matty Campbell, or Bionic, said: 'Heartbreaking. we're all here for you ❤️'
'My heart genuinely breaks for you both, sending big hugs❤️' commented Fury star Jodie Ounsley. https://www.instagram.com/p/DND7398NYYI/?hl=en-gb
In Leo's honour, George has launched a 13-day-long fitness challenge during which he'll do a mile of burpees every day to commemorate his son.
Announcing the news on Instagram, George wrote: 'It's hard to put into words the pain of losing a child. The grief is heavy, and it's taken so much strength just to begin piecing ourselves back together.
'Our beautiful Leo taught us the true meaning of strength, courage, and bravery in his 13 precious days with us. Inspired by him, I'm taking on the '13 Days Fighting' challenge — to honour his life and carry forward his legacy.'
A donation to the fund will raise money for the Leicester Royal Infirmary NICU unit, where Leo was cared for, while also raising awareness for premature baby loss and supporting other families who have suffered similar heartbreak.
Fans can donate to the cause via George's GoFundMe page, which has raised over £6,000 so far. https://www.instagram.com/p/DNIOguKMhL9/?hl=en-gb
As the star prepared for the challenge, George shared a video of his fellow Gladiators practising 15 minutes of burpees. More Trending
'This is a moment that will forever be with me, my family and Leo 🦁' George wrote as he shared the footage to his Instagram account.
'Everyone who makes one of the greatest Tv shows on earth pulling together and doing burpees in memory of Leo ♥️'
Describing it as 'very emotional but perfect at the same time,' he signed off: 'Thank you, our boy would of loved watching this from above'.

Bikini-clad Tasha Ghouri steps out in knitted cover-up after quitting Celeb SAS - as she enjoys sunny Spain birthday break following boyfriend drama

Tasha Ghouri looked glum as she stepped out in a knitted mini dress on Monday after swapping Celebrity SAS for a sunny break in Spain for her birthday celebrations. The Love Island alumni, 27, has spent the last few days partying in Barcelona as she welcomed in her next chapter after quitting the Channel 4 reality show. It was filmed last year but aired on screens in recent weeks, with stars such as presenter Chloe Burrows and dancer Louis Spence also dropping out. As well as this, Tasha has recently been at the centre of headlines after Daily Mail revealed that her new boyfriend Cam was in a long-term relationship just weeks before going public with the Strictly star. But it seems she put on a brave face and shrugged the drama aside as she was seen out and about in the Spanish city at the start of the week. Tasha appeared to have a fun trip surrounded by her nearest and dearest, confirming she flew home on Tuesday with an Instagram snap from the plane. The TV personality looked casual chic in the cream mini dress which covered her skimpy beige bikini. Tasha paired her outfit with a designer Chloé bag and quilted sandals to covered her face with sunglasses as she strolled around the streets of Barcelona. Tasha celebrated her birthday on Monday after a turbulent year - from splitting from ex Andrew Le Page - to dating new man Cam. On Instagram, alongside a series of stunning photos, Tasha reflected on the ups and downs, writing: 'Goodbye 26.. dancing my way into 27!! 'Feeling incredibly grateful for everything this past year has brought, the growth, the love, the lessons and special moments! 26 was good to me, here's to 27 and everything this next chapter holds!! Have a feeling it's going to be magical. So much love to all of you, my friends & family who have been by my side through it all, going into this year with a full heart.' Her YouTuber boyfriend Cam stars in CBBC series One Zoo Three and BBC show OZT Goes Wild alongside his brothers Ty and Aaron. His family run Hertfordshire Zoo and he is the managing director of a non-profit charity, The Big Cat Sanctuary, which rescues wild cats and protects species at risk of extinction. Cam was previously dating stunning wildlife photographer Felicity Sutton, 34, for a year and together they shared a love of animals, with pals convinced at the time that 'nothing' could break the pair up. A source told The Sun: 'It came as a surprise to everyone to see Cam with Tasha. He was so loved up with Felicity before'. 'This time last year, he was with Felicity on his birthday, and it really looked like nothing would break them, but a year on, he's in Tuscany with Tasha for his big day. Everyone is bemused. 'Felicity doesn't have any hard feelings towards him as such, and she will always cherish their time together, it's just a lot to see your ex in the limelight suddenly.' Meanwhile Tasha's ex, Andrew Le Page, launched into an explosive rant about her being on a dating app during their relationship. Andrew claimed on that Tasha was using the celebrity dating app Raya while still in a relationship with him and insisted he wanted to speak out after she had appeared on 'one too many podcasts' to speak about him. Soon after, they released a shock joint statement. In the statement shared with Daily Mail, the former couple who met on Love Island in 2022, came together to address 'hurtful comments' in a move that took place after Andrew accused Tasha of not being able to 'keep his name out of her mouth'. The exes quickly put Andrew's rant aside and came together to address the 'noise' around their relationship as Tasha admitted to 'making mistakes' during their romance. Both parties expressed their wish to 'move on' from the relationship after suffering 'judgement and cruelty' from online trolls. Sharing her side of events, Tasha said: 'I just want to address recent hurtful comments about me and & Andrew. We've always been open about who we are and what we went through, the hate and harsh words have been unfair and overwhelming for both of us. 'No one deserves to be torn down, especially when they're already trying to heal. We've both made mistakes, we've both learned, and we've both grown. But the judgement and cruelty we are facing from people online has been hard. 'Please remember that behind every nasty post, every comment, every story, there are real people with real emotions. Always be kind.' While Andrew added: 'Tasha and I want to address the noise around our breakup, as there's been hate going around that neither of us ever wanted. 'Things were said on both sides, but at the end of the day, no relationship is perfect, but ours still had some incredible moments I'll always be grateful for.

Matthew and Stacey, the couple behind the Toyota World Runners social media pages, died in a recent off-road accident in the mountains of British Columbia towards the village of Trout Lake. ‌ Their deaths were confirmed by friends and family online and by Kaslo Search and Rescue, who attended the scene. The couple were driving through rough terrain on a forestry road north of Trout Lake on the evening of August 7 when rescuers believe they lost control of their vehicle. ‌ Mark Jennings-Bates, a manager with Kaslo SAR, said teams were called to the crash at around 7.30pm local time. ‌ He said: 'Our teams were able to get to them efficiently. It's a long journey, but they got there efficiently. So that was very, very helpful. And of course that means that the helicopter pilot could also fly straight to the destination with confidence that he was going to find them." Jennings-Bates confirmed that one of them had died before rescuers arrived, while the other was airlifted to hospital but later died. During that trip, the New Zealand friends helped Matthew and Stacey buy and build a Hilux so they could explore the country. They travelled together to Queenstown before the couple continued on to the South Island. ‌ 'Matthew and Stacey had an enormous impact on my life. First, through their content. Then, as close friends,' the post continued. Content cannot be displayed without consent 'We spent countless hours in fits of laughter, and I had the privilege of witnessing their fierce love for one another… They were planning their wedding and a lifetime of off-road exploration together.' ‌ The tribute also acknowledged the risks of their shared passion. 'Remote locations are part of what makes this lifestyle so special, but they come with risks. Matthew and Stacey knew that - and they embraced life regardless.' Matthew was remembered as 'the visionary, the drone pilot, the Toyota wheeler… hilarious, endlessly creative, and determined to live life to the fullest.' Article continues below Stacey was also described as 'the kindest of souls… number one camera operator, Toyota wheeler, and a truly grounded spirit unlike any other.' The tribute concluded: 'Rest in peace, you two. You will be forever missed.'

You have your clattery, neon-lit ones, where extra long extensions, bows and glitter are added. I'm a bit scared of those. Then you have classy places, like Buff, which already has a Concept Store outpost at The Arches on East Market Street. It recently opened a second branch, at St Ninian's Manse. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Visiting is an experience, in part because the mustard-coloured A-listed building is thought to be the oldest in Leith, with origins dating back to 1493. The Scottish Historic Buildings Trust have preserved and restored the structure, and its spaces are let out to various businesses. These are, in contrast to the property, very contemporary, with places like Maeve Barre and Pilates, as well as the lovely Buff. Their first floor premises is gorgeous - in hessian-hued neutrals, with a spa-like pedicure station, light fittings that look like blossoms, and neat manicure tables. Contribuetd Apparently, they recently featured in an interiors magazine. I can see why. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Their aesthetic is equally immaculate, when it comes to nails. I'd been pouring over their Instagram feed (@buffcs), before my visit, and I liked everything. According to owner Carly, the most popular look at the moment is a Hayley Bieber influenced milky white nails look. They can also do very cool sheer cat-eye finishes called Japanese Nuance, chrome details, or a touch of nail art. Choose from five tiers of manicure, from the simple Colour to the detailed Unstoppable. On their social media, I fell in love with a checkered look, and a couple of shades - a lovely cherry blossom pink, and an olive green. Carly asks what shape I want, and I go for her recommendation of squoval - a square meets oval. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad As part of my first manicure in years, she expertly trims my scraggy claws, tidies up my overgrown cuticles and hangnails, then gets the CND Shellac polishes out. The base goes on, then it's baked under the UV lamp, then repeat. Once my nails are as rose-hued as a cat's nose, Carly gets out a tiny paintbrush, and applies the green check to my ring finger, and half of my pinkie nail. I'm baked again, and a glossy topcoat goes on, before the process is concluded with a hand massage. It's been a very pleasurable and relaxing 45 minutes, and it's lovely to spend time in such an astmospheric space, with its beams and curved stone staircase. Carly says the finished look should last two to three weeks, but it hasn't chipped or faded, one month later. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad That's despite doing all the dishes, lifting weights, gardening, and undergoing other everyday wear and tear trials. It has, however, grown out a bit - inevitable - though I still feel it's too soon to get it removed. I'm going to hold onto my lovely talons for a little longer. Just one more week.
