Gladiators star Steel reveals medical procedure contributed to newborn son death

Metro2 days ago
Gladiators star Zack George, aka TV athlete Steel, has shared how he believes a medical procedure contributed to the death of his newborn son.
The BBC star, 35, and wife Samantha George welcomed son Leo earlier this year, who was born 23 weeks premature.
Tragically, the infant died 13 days later, as his condition took a grave turn.
Described by George as 'one hell of a strong boy,' the issues began when Leo was taken off his ventilator and placed on CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), a non-invasive way of keeping airways open.
It was during this procedure that it is believed accidental damage was done to his windpipe.
Later suffering from brain bleeds, a hole in his heart, and collapsing lungs, air pockets also began to form around little Leo's lungs.
George told The Mirror: 'Around the tenth day, they started getting a bit bigger. They came to the conclusion that when they tubed him, either the first or the second time, they created a hole in his windpipe. It's no one's fault; a baby that young is really fragile—it's just a risk.'
He continued: 'That was really hard, because if it hadn't happened, he would probably still be here. A 23-week-old baby has so much to do. Overnight, he got quite bad; that's when we went in, and he passed away.'
With Leo already having been through so much, the parents decided against CPR.
On April 8, George shared the sad news in a post to his Instagram account. Posting a picture of himself and Samantha cradling their son, he wrote: 'Your mummy brought you into this world and your daddy held you as you left ♥️
'Leo…… you showed us what the true definition of strength is and we are so proud of you.
'You brought so much positivity to the world with the short time you were with us and we felt that positivity in abundance, we thank you all so much for that.
'Although you were only with us for a short time, you brought us a lifetime of love. Thank you for letting us know that YOU had had enough of this fight. We will forever be grateful that we didn't have to make that decision for you 💔
'Leo our lion, we love you more than you will ever know.
'Rest easy our little boy 🦁🦁🦁'.
In the comments below, George's Gladiators co-stars paid tribute to the family's loss.
'RIP baby Leo 💔🕊️ Thoughts and prayers are with you both,' wrote Montell Douglas, who plays Gladiator Fire.
'So sorry!! Forever here for you guy!!' said Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, AKA Nitro.
Matty Campbell, or Bionic, said: 'Heartbreaking. we're all here for you ❤️'
'My heart genuinely breaks for you both, sending big hugs❤️' commented Fury star Jodie Ounsley. https://www.instagram.com/p/DND7398NYYI/?hl=en-gb
In Leo's honour, George has launched a 13-day-long fitness challenge during which he'll do a mile of burpees every day to commemorate his son.
Announcing the news on Instagram, George wrote: 'It's hard to put into words the pain of losing a child. The grief is heavy, and it's taken so much strength just to begin piecing ourselves back together.
'Our beautiful Leo taught us the true meaning of strength, courage, and bravery in his 13 precious days with us. Inspired by him, I'm taking on the '13 Days Fighting' challenge — to honour his life and carry forward his legacy.'
A donation to the fund will raise money for the Leicester Royal Infirmary NICU unit, where Leo was cared for, while also raising awareness for premature baby loss and supporting other families who have suffered similar heartbreak.
Fans can donate to the cause via George's GoFundMe page, which has raised over £6,000 so far. https://www.instagram.com/p/DNIOguKMhL9/?hl=en-gb
As the star prepared for the challenge, George shared a video of his fellow Gladiators practising 15 minutes of burpees. More Trending
'This is a moment that will forever be with me, my family and Leo 🦁' George wrote as he shared the footage to his Instagram account.
'Everyone who makes one of the greatest Tv shows on earth pulling together and doing burpees in memory of Leo ♥️'
Describing it as 'very emotional but perfect at the same time,' he signed off: 'Thank you, our boy would of loved watching this from above'.

Eamonn Holmes says 'Ruth does all the hard stuff' as he opens up about shared custody

Eamonn Holmes has shared an update on rescue dog Maggie this week following his split from Ruth Langsford, with whom he had adopted the canine companion over a decade ago Presenter Eamonn Holmes wrote about his ex Ruth Langsford in an update about their rescue dog Maggie this week. He's given an insight into the arrangements between them after having paid tribute to Maggie over the weekend. ‌ Eamonn, 65, and Ruth, 65, announced last year that they had decided to separate after 14 years of marriage. The former couple, who also have a son together, were later said to be involved in a custody dispute over canine Maggie, whom they had adopted as a family in 2011. ‌ After posting about Maggie yesterday, Eamonn returned to Instagram this afternoon with an update. It included him paying tribute to Ruth, who regularly posts about taking Maggie on walks, and teased over his plans for the future. ‌ Eamonn told his followers that Maggie will feature in the Times this week. He wrote: "So much interest and Love for Maggie following yesterday's post to the extent that she is going to star in @thetimes on line from tomorrow and this week's Sunday Times." The former This Morning host, who has experience health issues in recent years, went on to say that his ex does "all the hard stuff" with Maggie. He said: "Ruth does all the hard stuff with her because of my Wheelchair restrictions but working hard to hopefully get better soon and adopt another #Rescue #Dog like we did from @dogstrust all those years ago!" ‌ The presenter added: "Maggie changed my life and she was making me very happy in The Sunshine today. In many ways she reminds me of my dearly departed Mum - a really bad knee and hardly any teeth left but not bad for a 17 year old!" Eamonn, who is a patron of rescue group K-9 Angels, concluded: "Please try to Adopt and Not Shop if u can. from organisations like @thek9angels and @dogstrust Enjoy the Sunshine but please be aware of your dog in a car and it's little feet on hot pavements. Bye from Maggie and Me." ‌ The journalist, who used Randy Newman's song You've Got A Friend in Me from Toy Story (1995) in the post, had posted about Maggie yesterday. Alongside photos, he said in his previous post: "17 years apart ... and we r both still going - JUST. Maggie and Me #dogstrust #adoptdontshop." Eamonn and Ruth were said to be having "difficult conversations" about where Maggie would live following their separation. There were even previously reports of a custody dispute over the dog between the former couple. It was however suggested in May last year that Maggie was likely to end up primarily with Loose Women panelist Ruth. A source told the Sun at the time that Maggie is "like a daughter" to the exes, who were both said to "dote" on her. ‌ The source further told the outlet: "But she's getting on and they know she needs stability. It's a case of who can give her that." They added that the prospect of "giving her up" was "heartbreaking" for GB News presenter Eamonn. They said that Eamonn "adores" her but teased over the canine ending up with his ex. The source said last year: "But if Ruth is able to get out and about and walk her more, then it may well be that she gets Maggie in the split."

Devastation as EastEnders fan-favourite reconsiders return

Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) has been left devastated in EastEnders, after learning daughter Lily (Lillia Turner) has postponed her return to Walford. Lily made a temporary departure in May, after realising that she needed time away from her mum in the wake of her step-father Martin Fowler's (James Bye) death. Martin tragically passed away in February, falling victim to the horrific explosion that tore through The Queen Vic pub. There seemed to be a glimmer of hope as he made his exit towards the barrel store with Stacey, but a beam fell from the ceiling and crushed him. As he lay dying, he confessed his love for Stace – telling her that his reunion with Ruby Allen (Louisa Lytton) was a mistake. In the aftermath, she struggled immensely with her grief, neglecting to care for Lily and her younger siblings Arthur and Hope. Lily even turned to drink and drugs to ease her own pain. A vicious argument between mother and daughter ensued, and Lily declared that she was packing her bags and going to stay with birth father Ryan Malloy (Neil McDermott). In tonight's episode, Stacey was thrilled to hear that her eldest was coming home. Amid the buzz and excitement, she noticed that a number of market traders were staring in her direction and gossiping. But what about? To her horror, it became apparent that someone had leaked all of her SecretCam content – the BBC soap's dupe version of OnlyFans – online, for all to see. And given we saw troubled Joel Marshall (Max Murray) accessing her profile last week, it's probably who we'd put our money on being responsible! In fact, following their earlier run-in, Stace' reckoned it was him too. She charged into the caff and outright accused him, with dad Ross (Alex Walkinshaw) leaping to his defence. Joel swore that he wasn't responsible, and back at home, willingly handed over his laptop to prove that he didn't leak the adult material. More Trending He also told Ross and Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig) to check his deleted files, as they wouldn't find anything that would incriminate him. Despite that, Stacey remained convinced – especially when she realised that the wording in the online posts matched what he'd said to her in person during a verbal attack. To make matters worse for poor Stace', she then discovered that Lily wasn't returning home as she was too embarrassed by the revenge porn situation.
