UNC linebacker named to Preseason Watch List for prestigious linebacker award
One of those nine starters recently earned preseason honors, ranking him amongst the best at his position across college football.
Andrew Simpson, who transferred to UNC from Boise State in May, was recently named to the Butkus Award Preseason Watch List. This award, won by former Georgia standout Jalon Walker in 2024, is given annually to the nation's top linebacker.
The Butkus Award semifinalists will then be announced November 4, finalists on Nov. 25 and the winner on Dec. 10.
Simpson comes from a Broncos squad that made its College Football Playoff debut in December, losing 31-14 against Penn State in the quarterfinal round. Simpson totaled 140 tackles (94 solo), 12.5 sacks, five forces fumbles and three interceptions across his three years as a Bronco, including a career-best three forced fumbles in 2024.
Now at North Carolina, Simpson will likely take over the starting middle linebacker spot previously occupied by Amare Campbell. The Tar Heels know how to produce linebackers in recent years, with names like Cedric Gray and Power Echols shining on their otherwise-lacking defensive unit.
Simpson won't be the only newbie amongst UNC's linebacking corps, with Washington transfer Khmori House and Nebraska transfer Mikai Gbayor also coming to Chapel Hill. Simpson will now be guided by defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, who left Washington for North Carolina upon Bill Belichick's head coaching announcement.
Ahead of a season with plenty of unfamiliar players, it's nice to see new Tar Heels getting preseason recognition. Winning the Butkus Award would be a nice cap to Simpson's collegiate career, but I imagine he'd rather help North Carolina reach greater team heights.

Michigan State hockey flips Northeastern blue line commit, bringing him in for 2025-26
Just when it was thought that Adam Nightingale had completed the roster building process for the upcoming 2025-26 season, an injury at an NHL development camp left a spot open on the blue line for the Spartans. The Spartans have now filled that hole, flipping a Northeastern commit, bringing Sean Barnhill into the program for the upcoming season. A third round pick by the New York Rangers in 2025, Barnhill spent the last season playing for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL. A 6-foot-5, 215 pound defenseman, he is a native of Scottsdale, Arizona. While he was originally set to enroll at Northeastern in 2026, the Spartans used their open roster spot as leverage, gaining his commitment for the 2025 season. Iowa women's basketball bigs forging important bond
Jan Jensen touched on how important Ava Heiden has been early in Layla Hays' development at Iowa. As the Iowa women's basketball program continues through its summer practices in Iowa City, head coach Jan Jensen praised the positive impact that she has seen from the energetic battles between centers Ava Heiden and Layla Hays. Heiden, who enters the 2025-26 campaign as the presumptive starting center, has taken freshman Leyla Hays under her wing throughout the summer by providing high-intensity challenges to the Wasilla, Alaska native that will help her succeed in the fall, especially come Big Ten play. When Jensen was asked about her opinion of the developing relationship between the two centers, she began by admitting that Heiden's size has been particularly beneficial for Hays, given that the freshman did not deal with any form of adversity from that perspective in her high school days in Alaska. "I think that's really been great. It's been nice for Layla to have a bigger body, because she's never dealt with that, especially in Alaska," Jensen said. Jensen continued by praising the competitive battles between the two as a way they can forge new skills and learn from each other, especially with an upperclassman who can accept physicality without taking it personally. "They can battle and can get intense and can get a little cranky, but there's still respect that I really love from the team that I've seen really forge pretty early. I think especially for post players, when you're learning as a young one, to really know when to throw an elbow because you need to, and it's the smart thing. It's nice to have a personality like an upperclassman that's not taken personally." With two skilled centers on the roster with multiple years of eligibility remaining, the Hawkeyes will look to utilize their combined dominance in the paint to their advantage this fall against a conference that features some of the nation's top post players.
