PSG storm back to win Super Cup on penalties

European champions Paris Saint-Germain began the new season by lifting more silverware as they beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties in the Uefa Super Cup after producing a late comeback to draw the match 2-2.
Spurs looked set to get their hands on the trophy in their first competitive match under new coach Thomas Frank as they led 2-0 just after half-time at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy.
Micky van de Ven gave last season's Europa League winners the lead on 39 minutes and Cristian Romero got their second goal three minutes into the second half.
However, PSG were rescued by two substitutes as Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute and Goncalo Ramos headed in the equaliser four minutes into injury time.
That meant a penalty shoot-out, although it started badly for PSG when Vitinha put their first kick wide.
However, new Paris goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed the target, allowing Nuno Mendes to convert the winning penalty for PSG.
Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro all scored from the spot for Spurs, in vain. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and Lee converted for PSG before Mendes stepped up.
It is the first time PSG, or indeed any French club, have lifted the Super Cup, as they take their tally of trophies won in 2025 to five.
"I am proud. We have hadn't much preparation but you could see that football is not only about the physical aspect – it is also about the mental aspect, being in the right place, having the right tactics," PSG captain Marquinhos told broadcaster Canal Plus.
"They sat back a lot after going 2-0 up and it is dangerous to invite PSG to come at you like that," he added.
It is the perfect start to the new campaign for Luis Enrique's team, who had a shortened off-season break having lost the Fifa Club World Cup final to Chelsea exactly a month ago. (AFP)

Frank's bid to revive Tottenham's league fortunes got off to the perfect start in north London. Richarlison made the most of the faith shown in him by Frank as the Brazilian turned in Mohammed Kudus' cross to open the scoring. The pair combined again on the hour in more spectacular fashion as Richarlison's bicycle kick converted the Ghanaian's delivery. Brennan Johnson was Tottenham's Europa League final hero with the only goal against Manchester United and he began the new season by racing clear to slot in the third. "Perfect start or dream start. A good performance against a difficult opponent. I will just enjoy it and I hope the players, the club and the fans enjoy it because that is important," Frank said. At Molineux, Pep Guardiola unveiled his City revamp as he bids to bounce back from last season's third-place finish. City's failure to defend the title after winning it for the previous four seasons has prompted a major overhaul from Guardiola. Despite Haaland's double, it was new signing Tijjani Reijnders who stole the show with a hand in all of City's first three goals. "We knew he is a top signing for the coming years for City," said Guardiola on Reijnders outstanding Premier League debut after a £46.5 million move from AC Milan. The relay, a new format making its debut at a major international event, pairs two athletes on a team. The second climber starts only after the first hits the timing pad at the top, and the combined time determines the final result. The competition in Chengdu also produced the first men's and women's world records in the discipline. The Chinese pairing of Chu Shouhong and Long Jianguo reached the final having overcome Samuel Watson and Zachary Hammer of America in the semifinal. Watson, still nursing a shoulder injury, delivered a clean run, but Hammer slipped, sending the Chinese duo to the final. In the final Chu and Long – both fresh off individual golds – met another American pair, 18-year-old Michael Hom and 17-year-old Logan Schlecht. Both teams went error-free, but the Chinese pair prevailed in 10.26 seconds, each claiming a second gold medal of the Games. "The atmosphere in our climbing community is really good," Long said. "My English isn't great, but every time I see Samuel and the others I would always say hello. I know Watson has been dealing with an injury, so we didn't get to see his peak form. I hope he can return to the top soon." On the women's side, China's Deng Lijuan and Zhou Yafei dominated, breaking the world record three times in one day, lowering it to 13.28 seconds in the semifinals before defeating compatriots Qin Yumei and Zhang Shaoqin for gold. Photo: Reuters World number two Carlos Alcaraz fought off a fierce challenge from Andrey Rublev to reach the semi-finals of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Friday as women's defending champion Aryna Sabalenka was sent crashing out by Elena Rybakina. Spain's Alcaraz broke Rublev in the final game of a tense duel to emerge a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 winner and will face third-seeded Alexander Zverev, who brought the winning run of fifth-seeded Toronto Master champion American Ben Shelton to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Germany's Zverev complained of feeling dizzy and out of breath as he led by a set and a break, but benefitted from 27 unforced errors from a listless Shelton over 76 minutes. Zverev earned a 4-1 lead in the second set as Sheldon angrily tossed his racquet on the changeover, and the 2021 champion polished off the win on a second match point and now has 24 hours to try and get fit. "I'm not feeling too great now, but I have a day to get fresh," Zverev said. "I hope to be at 100 percent. I'm not sure what happened. I felt very well but at the end of the first set it got progressively worse. But I'll do all I can to give it a shot tomorrow." Top seeded Sabalenka had no answer for 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina, who beat the Belarusian 6-1, 6-4 to book a semi-final meeting with Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek – a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Anna Kalinskaya. Rybakina claimed a fifth victory in her 12-match personal rivalry with Sabalenka, avenging a loss to the Belarusian in Berlin two months ago. She was aided by 11 aces as she reached her first Cincinnati semi-final. "I'm happy with the serve. It was the key today," Rybakina said. "I served really well." "If she had been serving well it would have been a totally different match," she acknowledged. Rybakina has won her last three matches against Swiatek, all played this season. Swiatek needed 93 minutes and five match points to get past Kalinskaya in what she called "the best match I played here". In other quarter-final action, Veronika Kudermetova crushed Varvara Gracheva 6-1, 6-2 and awaits the winner of Friday night's match between world number two Coco Gauff and ninth-ranked Jasmine Paolini.
