Strictly star hits out at 'tough' axing after brutal way they found out

Daily Mirror30-06-2025
Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips has branded her exit from the BBC dance competition as 'tough' as she gave her opinion on the latest scandals
Arlene Phillips has admitted she found her Strictly Come Dancing exit "tough," after being suddenly replaced without warning. The dancer and former judge, 82, saw her departure from the hit BBC competition spark an ageism row as Alesha Dixon, then 30, took her place.
Despite having decades of experience as a dancer and choreographer, Arlene found out about the bosses' decision through the radio rather than being told directly. Controversy has continued to surround the dance competition over the years, with actress Amanda Abbington sparking a bullying row.

She had accused her dance partner, Giovanni Pernice, of bullying during their time together in 2023, which he denied. This year, the drama off stage continued once again as Wynne Evans was booted off the tour due to his behaviour.

Arlene has since opened up on her own exit as well as the scandals that have followed. She told The Sunday Times: "I loved my time on Strictly and it was tough when I left, but I got up and carried on with life.
"I wasn't there when accusations of bullying were made against some of the dancers, but I was quite strict when I started teaching." The dancer credits her children with learning how to communicate without losing her temper.
"I realised there was a different way to talk to people when I had a child - I didn't want to lose my temper," she confessed. "There are ways to get people to do as you want without shouting."
Last year, Arlene admitted she 'kicked, screamed and sobbed' when she found out she was getting the boot from her beloved show. She had joined Strictly in 2004, but after the show wrapped in 2008, Arlene found out she'd got the chop.
Speaking out about the axe in a chat with the Mirror, the decorated Dame candidly admitted how she dealt with the news. She revealed: "I gave myself 48 hours to kick, scream, cry and sob, and eat scones with cream and jam, then I made myself wake up and get on with it."

Arlene went on to admit she felt she didn't ask the right questions after finding out the news, having later had more time to reflect. She continued: "I was very fragile because I had a bereavement the day before [her manager died].
"I wanted to know in detail and I wanted to know the real reason at the point when they decided for me to go, yet they kept me hanging on for so long with the possibility that there would be five judges."
At the time, it was rumoured that Arlene was axed because BBC thought she 'too old.' However, she claimed she still didn't know the reason why when she was dropped and replaced by Alesha, who had never critiqued a dance show - but was crowned Strictly champion.
When reflecting on the abrupt end to her time on the show, Arlene exuded elegance, stating: "I'm a grown up so when life comes along and it doesn't go the way you want, you just get on with it."
However, when quizzed about the possibility of rejoining the show, the former judge was unequivocally resolute, affirming: "They would never ask me so I would never think about it. It's not even an option."

Bankrupt Katie Price's ex Alex Reid leaks cash counting video to 'expose truth'

Katie's ex Alex Reid has vowed that 'the truth will now be heard'. A video has been leaked of bankrupt Katie Price counting a wad of cash, leading to further questions on her financial situation. Bankrupted twice over debts totalling more than £3m, the video shows Price lounging on a sofa, saying that she is 'enjoying counting' the pile of cash in front of her, adding: "there's loads here … I'm just sorting it out". ‌ Then asked by her daughter Princess if she would contribute towards her school fees and those of her second child with ex-husband Peter Andre, the TV personality says 'Your dad can sit on that' and lifting her middle finger. ‌ Wearing white jodhpurs and sat next to a Christmas tree, she goes on: 'Does he go on about it a lot? Well it's tough because I'm in bankruptcy to next May now.' ‌ Price also refers to a property - 'my London flat' - which she claims to own but which does not appear to have been traced by her bankruptcy trustees, reports the Mirror. The video was released today, August 18, by Price's ex, former cage fighter Alex Reid, who said in a statement that 'the truth will now be heard'. It is believed that the one minute and 38 second video, believed to have been filmed in late 2020, has been sent to Price's bankruptcy trustee who continues to 'seek realisations from various third parties'. Price has been celebrating the end of six years of 'hell' after being discharged from two bankruptcies and claiming it is a 'great achievement'. But a source said: 'A number of people have said that Katie deals in cash but this appears to be the first solid proof. There are lots of people owed a lot of money who now realise they are unlikely to ever get it. Katie gloating about it has stuck in the throat but this is not over.' ‌ Price was bankrupted twice - first in 2019 over debts totalling £3.5m, including £970,639 to HMRC and then again last March over a second £761,994 unpaid HMRC demand for money earned while she was already bankrupt. Creditors include Alex Reid who is owed £175,000 in High Court damages and costs he was awarded after Price revealed a sex tape he says was filmed without his consent. ‌ In the video, Price is heard claiming that she has 'extended' the bankruptcy 'because Alex Reid wants money from me and he won't be able to get it... he's an a***hole". In a video statement released today, Reid said: 'Over the years you have seen countless stories by Katie Price directed at me, Peter, Kieran and others. Today I want to be clear. ‌ "I am spear-heading a campaign to expose the truth. This isn't about gossip but about evidence. It's not about rumour, it's about reality. After years of silence, the time has finally come to reveal all.' He is seen watching the leaked video of Price and reacting, with comments like "this is unbelievable", "she just admitted she lied" and "has my legal team seen this?" Price said earlier this year on The Katie Price Show podcast: 'I'm not bankrupt anymore! I'm out of it, I'm out of both of them. The last six years have been hell - mentally and personally - everything has been hell. I've worked so hard to communicate and get rid of what caused all the trouble and I'm out of it. It's such a nice feeling not to be bankrupt anymore. I'm in control of everything now.' Farheen Qureshi, who was made Price's bankruptcy trustee in April 2023, told the Mirror: 'You should be aware that, notwithstanding that Ms Price has been discharged from both her first and second Bankruptcies, both Bankruptcies are still live and continuing and, in my capacity as her Trustee, I am seeking realisations from various third parties for the respective Bankruptcy estates. I would not wish to prejudice in any way either the outcome of that hearing or the further investigations being undertaken.' Alex Reid's post today marks the latest escalation between Price and her exes, after an equally damning statement against her was made by Peter Andre last week.

Huge BBC show with star presenters surprisingly axed after just one series despite hit ratings

The shock decision has been made despite the show landing 3.2million viewers for the series opener IT'S OVER Huge BBC show with star presenters surprisingly axed after just one series despite hit ratings Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT was the show that saw former Top Gear hosts Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris get back behind the wheel of a car together - this time searching for a cure to the dreaded mid-life crisis. But I can reveal that Paddy and Chris: Road Trippin' has already been parked after its debut series - with no second outing in the pipeline. Sign up for the Entertainment newsletter Sign up 1 Paddy and Chris: Road Trippin' has already been parked after its debut series - with no second outing in the pipeline Credit: BBC Which is a surprise given that it enjoyed decent viewing figures when it aired on Sunday nights on BBC One last year with a respectable 3.2m tuning in for the series opener. A TV insider said: 'It certainly wouldn't have helped that just a few weeks before the show began on the Beeb, host Chris was slating the corporation following Freddie Flintoff's horror crash while they were filming Top Gear. 'He said that he'd warned show bosses that someone could be killed or seriously injured on the show claiming producers were devising increasingly 'stupid and dangerous' stunts. 'The timing was not great, but by that stage Road Trippin', which saw Chris reunited with Paddy without Freddie, had already been made and was ready to go out on air.' Paddy has always remained relatively tight-lipped about the Top Gear crash that caused horrific injuries to Freddie in December 2022. Freddie, meanwhile, claimed in his Disney+ documentary that the BBC treated him 'like a piece of meat.' It's understood that the BBC haven't entirely closed the door on doing more shows with Paddy and Chris, though there is nothing on the horizon. Yesterday a Beeb spokesman yesterday confirmed: 'Whilst viewers can enjoy all episodes of Road Tripping on BBC iPlayer now, there are currently no plans for any new episodes at the moment.' THE BBC has confirmed The Celebrity Traitors will air in October, three nights a week for three weeks. It will clash with ITV's new series of Big Brother. A similar show, the BBC's Destination X, is currently beating ITV's The Fortune Hotel with double the ratings.

BBC forced to pull Ozzy Osbourne documentary after star's family complained about ‘rushed' show with ‘wrong tone'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE BBC mysteriously pulled their Ozzy Osbourne documentary from the schedules last night – just 11 days after announcing they would be airing it. Although the Beeb initially offered no explanation for the last minute axing of the Ozzy and Sharon's hotly anticipated show, Coming Home, I've been told there were concerns about how the family felt about the end product. 'The BBC's production had been originally planned to run as a ten part series following Ozzy and Sharon's move back to the UK called Home To Roost. 'After Ozzy passed away, the makers of the series then decided it should be a one-off film. 'What mattered the most to the family was the overall tone and theme of the programme, which features Ozzy and Sharon in one of their last interviews together. 'It started to feel like the goal being pursued was that the BBC and the makers of the film were to get the show on air faster than the Paramount+ doc. 'Naturally that has caused some concerns with the family.' The BBC have yet to confirm what has gone on behind the scenes but did put out a statement which said: 'The film has moved in the schedules and we'll confirm new tx details in due course.' I've no doubt given Ozzy's legacy - and the feelings of his family - they want to get this just right before it goes out on screen. I was lucky enough to watch the Black Sabbath legend perform on stage for the final time at his Back To The Beginning concert in Villa Park. Just over two weeks later, Ozzy passed away at home aged 76 with Sharon by his side. The news hit myself, and his other millions of fans, like a tonne of bricks. The footage the filmmakers for the BBC and Paramount+ have will no doubt make for incredibly powerful viewing. To get that right is what Ozzy and his family deserves.
