Pink autos driven by men seized; traffic cops asked to get tough
Chennai: Tamil Nadu govt's 'Pink Auto' scheme, started to provide safe travel for women and children, is facing problems with rule violations. Recently, two pink autos in Chennai were seized after they were found being driven by men, which is against the scheme's rule.
The initiative was inaugurated by the chief minister on March 8, 2025, under the Safe City Project, and aims to both ensure safer mobility for women and create livelihood opportunities for them. In the first phase, 165 pink autos were distributed, with another 85 autos slated for distribution in the coming months.

As part of the scheme, each eligible woman driver receives a 1 lakh subsidy, bank loan assistance, a one-week driving and safety training program conducted by the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation, and a mandatory pink uniform. "Importantly, beneficiaries are required to sign an undertaking not to transfer ownership or allow others particularly men to operate the vehicles," said M Haritha, district social welfare officer.

Despite these provisions, complaints have emerged from multiple parts of Chennai regarding unauthorized male drivers operating the pink autos. After issuing several warnings to the beneficiaries, the Social Welfare Department, along with RTO officials, seized two such autos in the past week.
Taking further steps to ensure compliance, the social welfare department has now enlisted the help of the traffic police. Personnel have been instructed to identify and seize any pink autos being driven by men, with immediate effect. "The scheme's core objective women's safety and empowerment must not be undermined, and any violation will be met with strict action under the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules and the amended Motor Vehicles Act," said an official from social welfare department.
M Sampath of AITUC, a central Chennai auto driver and member of the Collector's Committee for Social Security Schemes, said the pink autos should have been given to women who were already driving autorickshaws. "If that had been done, the scheme wouldn't have been misused," he said. He added that Chennai has around 1.20 lakh auto drivers, of whom only about 300 are women.

Rs 1.5k-cr govt land cleared of scrap godowns & sheds in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: A govt land — valued at Rs 1,500 crore — in Sector 21 was cleared on Tuesday. The anti-encroachment drive saw demolition of 20 scrap godowns and 30 tin-set rooms and huts using bulldozers. Originally acquired by Haryana Urban Development Authority (now HSVP) in the late 1970s, this area was meant for developing a sector. The team cleared about 15 acres of Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP)-owned land till evening. An HSVP official said the enforcement will continue on Wednesday, with a total of around 22 acres set to be cleared in the coming days. The official said, "Any future attempts to encroach will lead to FIRs and strict legal action." The drive saw heavy police deployment from Sector 22 police station. The enforcement was carried out in the presence of district nodal officer RS Batth along with a team of HSVP officials. Duty magistrate and SDE Surendra Babbar was also present. Soon after the operation began around noon, it faced resistance from locals and land claimants. Last year, a major fire broke out, which took the fire department six hours to douse the flames. Batth said no structures can be built on land under litigation and asked the encroachers to remove their belongings before Wednesday's enforcement drive. "We won't tolerate any encroachment on govt land. We will follow the law, offer time to vacate, but will not hesitate to take strict action if needed," Batth said. According to an HSVP official, two days prior to the operation, public announcements were made in the area warning occupants to vacate the land. The drive was carried out as per orders from HSVP estate officer-I Rakesh Saini. In 2013, Punjab and Haryana high court ruled that only vacant plots could be acquired by the state govt. Those on which construction was carried out could not be acquired unless the land was needed for setting up essential public utilities such as roads, water and electricity infrastructure, the HC said. Haryana govt subsequently appealed against this decision and the case is pending before Supreme Court.

Jaipur/Jaisalmer: A Jaipur court on Tuesday sent Shakur Khan, an assistant administrative officer in the employment department in Jaisalmer, to seven days' police remand after intelligence agencies arrested him for allegedly spying for Pakistan. Khan was picked up from his Mangliyon Ki Dhani village on May 28 and formally arrested on Monday evening following multiple rounds of interrogation at the Intelligence Bureau headquarters in Jaipur. According to the prosecution, WhatsApp chats, frequent communication with Pakistan-based individuals, and multiple unauthorised visits to the country without informing the department pointed to his involvement in espionage. Khan, who has been booked under Official Secrets Act, 1923, was produced before a local court in Jaipur. Prosecution officer Sudesh Kumar Sattawan said: "We sought 10-day remand, arguing that he made unauthorised visits to Pakistan and there was evidence of his contact with ISI. Further interrogation is needed to gather more evidence and uncover any spy network he may have been linked to within India." IG (CID security) Vishnu Kant Gupta said Khan had been under surveillance for some time. "It was found that Shakur Khan was in regular contact with certain individuals working at the Pakistani embassy, particularly Danish and Sohail Qamar, among others," the officer said. The case has sparked political controversy in Rajasthan after it emerged that Khan worked in 2008 as a personal assistant to Congress politician and former MLA Saleh Mohammad, who is from Jaisalmer.
