Innovation occurs at the intersection of complementary disciplines. Apple entered the market at the intersection of personal computing and design, making the PC sexy and approachable. IBM was the dominant market leader, but until Steve Jobs introduced Apple's iconic design aesthetic, the PC was about as sexy as Bill Gates dancing on stage at the Windows 95 launch - an acquired taste at best. Roofbuddy sits at the intersection of the Trades and Tech and has found this a rewarding and somewhat neglected niche.
The first principle that became part of our DNA was to test everything under real-world conditions. To call the system we entered the market with in May 2022, a BETA would be generous, we pushed the envelope for what could be called a minimum viable product and went straight into the market to transact. It was messy, uncomfortable, time-consuming and incredibly manual, but it worked (just). 3 transactions in May, 15 in June and 10 in July - it was like the Wright Brothers prototype; off the ground, and we built the rest while we were in flight.
Ukraine's drone industry has transformed from nascent to world-leading in under 3 years. For this very reason, they didn't have the best people, tech, or abundant funding - the advantage they had was real-time battlefield testing. Test in the real world, fail fast, measure results, adapt, iterate and optimise - this is one of our core values we discuss internally as a "culture of continuous improvement".
Secondly, money talks AND pays the bills, transacting early generates revenue that fuels growth and covers costs. If you are profitable, the runway is infinite, you retain your autonomy, set terms for investors or eschew them altogether and exist in a healthy 'growth management' mindset. The Eisenhower Matrix, Pareto Principle and Elon's much-touted "First Principles Thinking" all guide the Roofbuddy team to the same conclusion - earning income and remaining profitable is core. It follows that supporting revenue growth has been the tech team's primary prerogative from the outset.
We have built more than our fair share of zombie features that didn't commercialise as anticipated - that's healthy attrition. However, if every epic, sprint and ticket is viewed through the lens of increasing revenue or decreasing cost, prioritisation becomes incredibly simple - estimate by magnitude and execute.
The Roofbuddy marketplace has been an ambitious, tech-driven reimagining of how roofing transactions are conducted - so far as we know, we are the greatest (only) roofing, sales, tech, price aggregation marketplace in the world. When Uber and Airbnb started growing parabolically, they got significant blowback from market incumbents with entrenched vested interests. We have seen a bit of that ourselves, too and anticipate more. Transcending these 'speed limit' warnings is all about value creation - how is our product and service making the lives of our users easier and better? Roofers can quote a job in 2 minutes instead of 2 hours - that's measurable value created. Customers can get multiple competitive, comparable quotes in 24 hours instead of 24 days - more value.
A core function of technology is to systematise and rationalise complex information and distil it down into its functional essence - in Roofbuddy's case, that means answering one question as quickly and accurately as possible: What is the price? The extent to which we have made that easier for our Roofing partners to calculate and our customers to receive and understand; that is the value we have created. True value is immutable; Trademe is not a garage sale.
Napoleon's Grand Armée conquered the entire European continent in an administratively led war of self-defence, ostensibly. This revolution in military affairs had nothing to do with better muskets, cannons or ships. It was a revolution of meritocratic management, administration, supply chain, logistics and information flow - doing the boring stuff several orders of magnitude better than competitors was (and still is) the path to total victory. Creating our own proprietary CRM as opposed to grafting our tech stack onto an existing offering was a huge inflection point but dividends abound.
It's allowed us unconstrained flexibility and freedom of movement to handle internal and external workflows in a profoundly efficient way. Like the proverbial marble run, our proprietary CRM now serves and automates the information and workflow between customers, roofers and our staff to achieve an unprecedented level of service, accuracy of information and end-to-end workflow management. Roofbuddy's tech excels in the 'boring' details, and it's been a boon for team morale and overall performance. Plugging another of Roofbuddy's values at this point seems inevitable - "esprit de corps"; my penchant for military history foisted on my poor unsuspecting colleagues at every opportunity - and now you too.
At Roofbuddy, performance is tangible and measurable across all departments. In 3 years, the Roofbuddy marketplace has served 35,469 unique customer enquiries, delivered 39,325 quotes and processed 3,594 orders totalling $78,707,202.51 in roofing services transacted; we measure innumerable performance metrics that instruct daily discussion and action. Our mature codebase (~2964 commits) sees ~3.3 commits and 1.5 deployments daily, with a robust CI/CD pipeline achieving 100% successful builds, thanks to extensive frontloaded checks. We maintain 71% test coverage, uphold a 99% uptime, and average a 2-minute rollback, ensuring rapid recovery from any issues.
New developers land their first meaningful commit within 10 days, reflecting our inclusive, fast-moving culture. Our developers aren't hidden away in caves - they're deeply embedded in real-world problems, working shoulder-to-shoulder with the front line team. From the very start, our engineers are shaped to be product champions, not just coders, ensuring that every line they write solves meaningful challenges. Without a scoreboard, it's just exercise.
Roofbuddy enjoys a fantastic culture of high performance and achievement, and I'm proud of the results the team have delivered over the last 3 years - we aspire to be a bright spot of innovation and kiwi dynamism during a bleak and attritional economic period for Aotearoa. We believe we are building unique tripartite, transactional, marketplace technology that can be adapted and utilised in hundreds of different countries and thousands of different industries; Roofbuddy's CTO, Igi Manaloto, just had an involuntary heart palpitation as I wrote that.
We have achieved profound product market fit, proof of concept and dramatically altered the transactional dynamics in the Roofing industry - to some incumbents' chagrin. So far, we have greatly improved the level of service and value for money customers can expect from a roofing service provider, that's only been possible with our tech-first approach, and there is much more work to do! Our proprietary tech stack is portable, dynamic and can be deployed into different verticals and horizontals at scale; so we are extremely excited to see how far we can go in New Zealand and abroad over the coming years.

Apple said it earned US$94.04 billion (NZ$155.2 billion) in revenue for its fiscal third quarter ended 28 June, up nearly 10 percent from a year earlier and beating analyst expectations of US$89.54 billion (NZ$147.7 billion), according to LSEG data. Its earnings per share of US$1.57 (NZ$2.59) per share topped expectations of US$1.43 (NZ$2.36) per share. Apple shares were up about 2 percent in after-hours trading. Sales of iPhones, the Cupertino, California, company's best-selling product, were up 13.5 percent to US$44.58 billion (NZ$73.6 billion), beating analyst expectations of US$40.22 billion (NZ$66.4 billion). Apple has been shifting production of products bound for the US, sourcing iPhones from India and other products such as Macs and Apple Watches from Vietnam. Still, the company had warned investors that US tariffs could cost it US$900 million (NZ$1.49 billion) in the fiscal third quarter, and it trimmed its annual share buyback program by US$10 billion (NZ$16.5 billion), a move analysts viewed as helping to free up cash to remain nimble in uncertain times. The ultimate tariffs many Apple products could face remain in flux, and many of its products are currently exempt. Sales in its Americas segment, which includes the US and could face tariff impacts, rose 9.3 percent to US$41.2 billion (NZ$68.0 billion). In Greater China, where Apple has faced long delays in approval to introduce AI features on its devices, sales were US$15.37 billion (NZ$25.4 billion), up from a year ago and above expectations of US$15.12 billion (NZ$25.0 billion), according to a survey of five analysts from data firm Visible Alpha. That gain was a turnaround from a year-over-year decline in China sales in the March quarter. In an interview with Reuters, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company set seasonal records for upgrades of iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches. He said Apple estimates about 1 percentage point of its 9.6 percent of sales growth in the quarter was attributable to customers making purchases ahead of potential tariffs. "We saw evidence in the early part of the quarter, specifically, of some pull-ahead related to the tariff announcements," Cook told Reuters, though he also said the active user base for iPhones hit a record high in all geographies. The US is still negotiating with both China and India, with Trump saying India could face 25 percent tariffs as early as Friday. However, analysts said India could still retain cost advantages for Apple in the longer term. "The results show that Apple's iPhone strategy is working to offset the impact of looming challenges with AI development timelines (and) tariff pressures," said Emarketer analyst Jacob Bourne. Tariffs are only one of Apple's challenges. The company faces competition from rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co in a tough market for premium-priced mobile phones. On the software front, Apple faces challenges from Alphabet, which is quickly weaving AI features into its competing Android operating system. While AI leaders Microsoft and Nvidia have seen their stock market values soar to record highs, Apple's shares have fallen 17 percent in 2025, with investors concerned about the impact of tariffs, and about what they view as slow progress integrating AI features into its products. Apple has delayed the release of an AI-enriched version of Siri, its virtual assistant, but Cook said the company is "making good progress on a personalised Siri." He also said Apple, which has thus far not engaged in the massive capital expenditures of its Big Tech rivals to pursue AI, is "significantly growing" its investments in artificial intelligence. "Apple has always been about taking the most advanced technologies and making them easy to use and accessible for everyone, and that's at the heart of our AI strategy," Cook said. Apple faces regulatory rulings in Europe that threaten to undermine its lucrative App Store business. Apple said sales from its services business, which includes the App Store as well as music and cloud storage, were US$27.42 billion (NZ$45.2 billion), topping analyst expectations of US$26.8 billion (NZ$44.2 billion). Sales of wearables such as AirPods and Apple Watches were US$7.4 billion (NZ$12.2 billion), missing estimates of US$7.82 billion (NZ$12.9 billion). Mac sales of US$8.05 billion (NZ$13.3 billion) beat expectations of US$7.26 billion (NZ$12.0 billion), while iPads hit US$6.58 billion (NZ$10.9 billion) in sales, missing expectations of US$7.24 billion (NZ$11.9 billion). Apple said gross margins were 46.5 percent, beating analyst expectations of 45.9 percent, according to LSEG estimates. - Reuters

Dawnguard raises USD $3m to embed security at design stage

Amsterdam-based cybersecurity startup Dawnguard has emerged from stealth with a pre-seed funding round totalling USD $3 million. The funding was led by 9900 Capital alongside a group of angel investors including scale-up founders and current CIOs and CISOs. This financial backing will be allocated to expanding Dawnguard's engineering team, enhancing enterprise integrations, and progressing the company's platform towards broader production deployments. Embedded approach Dawnguard has set out to introduce a new approach to cybersecurity by embedding security directly into system architecture, rather than bolting it on at later stages. This model ensures secure, compliant, and scalable systems from initial design through to deployment and beyond. "Our industry treats security as a checkbox. It's broken. We built Dawnguard because security needs to be part of the system's DNA from the start, not an afterthought. This is about aligning intent with reality, and giving teams the tools to enforce that alignment at the earliest stage and long after deployment," said Mahdi Abdulrazak, CEO of Dawnguard. Dawnguard's platform is designed to provide a collaborative canvas for engineers and security professionals, aiming to bridge the historic gap between system design and security implementation. The company distinguishes itself by not only scanning deployments or automating reviews but facilitating ongoing alignment of enterprise security goals within the architecture itself. The startup's founding team is composed of cybersecurity specialists with backgrounds at IBM, Microsoft, Amazon, and the military. CEO Mahdi Abdulrazak and CTO Kim van Lavieren lead the team, bringing substantial experience in running large-scale security operations and in applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to cloud environments. AI and automation at the core Dawnguard is building AI and machine learning engines to identify vulnerabilities during the design phase of IT projects and maintain security as systems evolve. This proactive model is intended to allow security decisions to be enforced early and consistently, addressing risks before systems go into production and responding dynamically as new vulnerabilities and threats emerge. "Dawnguard closes the gap between design and reality. We're giving teams the power to translate security intent into enforceable code so they don't have to rely on spreadsheets, static docs, or guesswork," said Kim van Lavieren. The platform targets security architects, DevOps engineers, and cloud teams. It enables users to validate cloud infrastructure designs pre-deployment, automatically generate production-ready Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using validated models, and keep enforcing security posture throughout the system lifecycle, helping to pre-empt issues and avoid post-deployment drift. Industry response and investment "Dawnguard isn't just building tech - they're rewriting the DNA of cybersecurity. In a world addicted to patching symptoms, they've chosen to re-engineer the root. That's not just bold - it's necessary," said Dimitri van Zantvliet, Dutch Railways CISO & Chair Dutch CISO Community, and a Dawnguard investor and advisor. "Hundreds of security tools overwhelm CISOs with promises of better detection, yet few tackle the root issue: design flaws in code that AI-driven threats exploit. As attacks grow smarter, defenses must shift left - embedding resilience at the codebase. We are excited to back Dawnguard, who build protection by design, not patch by necessity," said Chris Corbishley, Managing Partner 9900 Capital. Future plans Dawnguard intends to grow its platform capabilities to support increasingly dynamic operational environments. Plans include addressing the security risks presented by rapid AI-driven development methodologies and bridging the gap between quickly prototyped software and the infrastructure it runs on. The company is also working on a new operational model aimed at enabling organisations to create scalable, trustworthy systems that can better resist emerging digital threats. "With software moving faster than ever, security can't be stuck in the past," Abdulrazak said. "We're creating the platform that makes secure architecture not just possible, but inevitable."
