Driving KSA's digital future: Cisco's Saudi chief talks AI, cybersecurity and local talent development

Arab Newsa day ago
On the sidelines of Cisco Connect KSA, Salman Faqeeh, managing director of Cisco Saudi Arabia, discussed how the global technology leader is helping to accelerate the Kingdom's digital transformation and build a future-ready economy. With nearly three decades of presence in Saudi Arabia, Cisco's story is closely intertwined with the country's ambitions under Vision 2030.
Powering the AI revolution in Saudi Arabia
As Saudi Arabia doubles down on its efforts to lead the AI revolution, Cisco is working hand-in-hand with government and enterprise partners to build the infrastructure of the future. Faqeeh highlighted Cisco's groundbreaking initiative with HUMAIN, Saudi Arabia's homegrown AI enterprise, to build one of the world's most open and scalable AI infrastructures.
'Saudi Arabia is laying the foundation for a globally competitive AI ecosystem,' Faqeeh said. 'With local data centers already operational for security cloud services and the Webex platform, and plans underway to bring the Meraki cloud to the Kingdom, Cisco is committed to enabling businesses to scale confidently in a cloud-first, AI-driven world.'
Upskilling the next generation
Beyond technology, Cisco is investing heavily in Saudi talent. Faqeeh announced the company's plans to launch the Cisco AI Institute at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, a center dedicated to driving AI innovation and preparing the next generation of Saudi talent.
Cisco is also scaling its efforts through digital upskilling, pledging free training for 500,000 learners over the next five years in critical areas such as AI, cybersecurity, and data science. This builds on the success of Cisco's Networking Academy, which has already trained over 401,000 learners in the Kingdom — 36 percent of whom are women.
'Our goal is to prepare Saudi talent to thrive in an AI-powered world,' Faqeeh said. 'Partnerships with institutions like King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology are also helping expand the pool of Cisco Certified Internetwork Experts, ensuring the Kingdom has the skilled workforce it needs to manage complex networks that support the AI future.'
Driving local manufacturing
Cisco is also laying the groundwork for local manufacturing operations in Saudi Arabia, starting with wireless technologies. According to Faqeeh, this effort will evolve in response to market demand, supporting the Kingdom's goal of building a sustainable and diversified economy.
A rapidly advancing digital landscape
Reflecting on the pace of digital transformation, Faqeeh praised Saudi Arabia's vision and execution. Over the past six years, the government has invested more than $24.8 billion in digital infrastructure. Internet penetration has reached 99 percent, with mobile Internet speeds surpassing 215 Mbps. The Kingdom now ranks first regionally and fourth globally for government digital services.
'Saudi Arabia is no longer just a consumer of technology; it's becoming a global leader,' Faqeeh said. 'We see immense opportunities for Cisco to contribute, especially in building AI-ready data centers, driving digital resilience, and developing future-proof workplaces.'
Strengthening cybersecurity in the age of AI
With the Kingdom accelerating its adoption of emerging technologies, cybersecurity has become a top priority. Cisco's recent Cybersecurity Readiness Index shows that 91 percent of Saudi organizations experienced AI-related cyber incidents last year, yet an impressive 93 percent of organizations already leverage AI in strengthening security strategies.
'Cybercriminals are using AI to automate and scale their attacks. Organizations can no longer rely solely on human-scale defenses,' Faqeeh explained. 'Cisco is embedding AI across its security portfolio to help SecOps teams assist, automate, and augment their capabilities.'
Cisco's AI Defense solution protects both the development and use of AI applications, safeguarding enterprises against misuse, data leakage, and sophisticated cyberthreats. Also Cisco's cloud security data center in Saudi Arabia powers cloud-based security services such as Secure Service Edge, Cisco Secure Access, and Umbrella DNS, providing local organizations with flexible, AI-powered protection.
Preparing for the future of industry transformation
Looking ahead, Faqeeh highlighted several critical trends shaping Saudi Arabia's industries. AI is transforming sectors from healthcare to finance, with organizations deploying secure, scalable infrastructures to harness practical AI use cases — such as predictive maintenance and automated onboarding.
The next leap, he said, will be agentic AI: autonomous AI tools capable of learning and acting independently. Supporting this evolution will require ultra-fast, low-latency, energy-efficient networks, as well as integrated security at every layer.
'We are on the verge of an AI-powered future that is difficult to fully comprehend today,' Faqeeh said. 'The infrastructure we build now — whether in networking, compute, or cybersecurity — will determine how far we can go.'
Vision 2030: A blueprint for the digital economy
Saudi Arabia's transformation is already bearing fruit. The digital economy contributes 15 percent to the GDP, equivalent to SR495 billion ($132 billion). The ICT market surpassed SR180 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $43.5 billion by 2027. The AI sector alone is expected to add $135 billion to the Saudi economy by 2030, accounting for 12 percent of the GDP.
'Vision 2030 isn't just a set of goals — it's a blueprint for building a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy,' Faqeeh added. 'At Cisco, we are proud to partner with Saudi Arabia on this journey, helping turn bold ambitions into reality.'

BYD Targets Saudi Arabia in Bold Move to Challenge Tesla

As the global automotive market undergoes rapid transformation, competition is no longer limited to traditional regions like Europe and North America. Now, Chinese automaker BYD has set its sights squarely on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, driven by an ambition nothing short of dominating one of the region's most complex and demanding markets. While electric vehicles still represent a small fraction of car sales in the Kingdom, BYD is moving forward confidently, aiming to take the lead as the landscape begins to shift. Global momentum beyond Tesla BYD's rise to this level of ambition didn't happen by chance. In recent months, the company has overtaken Tesla in several key markets, most notably in Europe, where it outsold Tesla in fully electric vehicles for the first time last April. This achievement affirms that BYD is no longer just a competitor—it is a major player reshaping the global EV landscape. Saudi Arabia: The new battleground Despite the many challenges facing EV adoption in Saudi Arabia—from high prices and weak charging infrastructure to extreme temperatures—BYD views the Kingdom as a major strategic opportunity. Electric vehicles currently account for just over 1% of total sales, but the company sees this as a golden window to establish an early presence and build local consumer trust. A rapidly expanding retail network Since its entry into the Saudi market last year, BYD has opened three showrooms and plans to grow that number to ten by mid-2026. The company's general manager in Saudi Arabia, Jerome Saigot, stated that BYD aims to sell over 5,000 vehicles in the Kingdom in 2025, emphasizing that this is just the beginning. 'We're not here to settle for 5,000 or 10,000 cars a year. We're aiming much higher,' Saigot told the press. A two-pronged strategy: Market momentum and Vision 2030 alignment BYD's strategy relies on two core factors. First, it's leveraging the momentum created by Tesla's market entry, marked by the opening of its first showroom in Riyadh this past April, which has raised public awareness around electric vehicles. BYD believes this growing awareness benefits the entire sector and opens the door for real competition. Second, BYD's goals align perfectly with Saudi Arabia's ambitious plan to become a regional hub for electric vehicles—driven by significant investment from the Public Investment Fund. From supporting Lucid's factory, to launching the local EV brand 'Ceer,' to expanding the national charging network, the government is building an ecosystem in which companies like BYD are poised to thrive. Will BYD succeed in asserting its dominance? The stakes are high—and so are the risks. But BYD is leaving nothing to chance. With the support of Al-Futtaim Motors, its official distributor in Saudi Arabia, a rapidly growing presence, a calculated strategy, and alignment with local transformation efforts, the Chinese automaker appears poised not just to compete, but to lead. If Saudi Arabia continues its push toward electrification, BYD may find itself at the forefront sooner than anyone expects.

Saudi Arabia tops MENA VC rankings with $860m in H1: MAGNiTT

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia led venture capital activity in the Middle East and North Africa in early 2025, raising $860 million — a 116 percent annual jump — backed by sovereign support and foreign interest. In its latest report, regional venture platform MAGNiTT revealed that the Kingdom witnessed 114 deals in the first half of the year, marking a significant 31 percent rise compared to the same period in 2024. This comes on the back of a strong 2024 performance, when Saudi Arabia retained its position as the most funded MENA country for VC for the second consecutive year. Startups raised $750 million, with a 34 percent increase in deal funding rounds below $100 million – dubbed MEGA deals – reflecting growing early- and mid-stage capital formation, according to a report released earlier this year by MAGNiTT and SVC. In its latest report for the first half, MAGNiTT stated: 'This growth was supported by continued sovereign capital activity, event-driven momentum from LEAP, and early-stage programs backed by new funds and accelerators.' Saudi Arabia ranked second among emerging venture markets in total VC funding, trailing only Singapore, which raised $1.28 billion across 120 deals in the first half. However, Singapore's funding declined 37 percent year on year, while the number of deals dropped 31 percent. 'The drop (in Singapore) signals a continued cooldown in late-stage deployment and foreign investor activity amid macro headwinds,' the report stated. Among emerging markets, Saudi Arabia was followed by the UAE, which raised $447 million in funding in the first six months of the year, a rise of 84 percent year on year. The UAE also matched Saudi Arabia in deal count, recording 114 deals, up 10 percent compared to the same period last year. This was driven by increased international participation, which reached its highest level in the Emirates since the first half of 2020. Elsewhere, Turkiye raised $226 million, followed by Vietnam at $216 million, Egypt at $185 million, and South Africa at $183 million. Nigeria raised $158 million, while Indonesia and Kenya secured $102 million and $71 million, respectively. The report further noted that fintech was the leading sector across all three EVM regions in the first half, accounting for 45 percent of VC funding in Southeast Asia, 38 percent in the Middle East, and 45 percent in Africa. 'The bulk of this activity was concentrated in payment solutions and lending platforms, which emerged as the dominant fintech subsectors,' added the report. Meanwhile, mergers and acquisitions activity across emerging venture markets saw 55 transactions in the first half, marking a 31 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
