Notorious Irish prison island to host unique sporting event
The island will play host to one of the biggest days in the Irish motorsport calendar this year when Red Bull Drift Pursuit takes over the former military base on Saturday July 5th.
The event will see 16 of the country's top drifters go head-to-head in a fierce 1v1 knockout format, with the storied prison walls as their backdrop.
It will test the accuracy, control and speed of each and every driver on the track, pushing them to their absolute max.
Drivers will be judged on two key criteria; course time and clipping points, with penalties for any infringements.
Emerging talent from the Irish drift scene will be rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in motorsport in Red Bull athletes, Conor Shanahan and Josh McErlean.
Both drivers will perform on the day, alongside Conor's brother Jack, delivering explosive demos that blend the rally power of Josh's M-Sport World Rally Ford Puma with the drifting precision of Conor's Toyota GT86 in a one-of-a-kind, gearbox-shredding display.
The event kicks off at 6.45pm and finishes at 8.30pm, and tickets are on sale now on the Red Bull website, priced at €45 for a standing ticket and €55 for a seated ticket.
Ferry transfers from Ringaskiddy or Cobh are included in the ticket, with ferries running throughout the day.
Cork drifter and Red Bull athlete Conor Shanahan said: 'As a proud Corkman, it is incredible to see a drift event like this take place at such an iconic location like Spike Island.
'Some of the best drifters in Ireland will be competing, and I know Jack and I are looking forward to putting on a show.'
Before the action kicks off, spectators can avail of Spike Island tours to learn more about the island's rich history as a naval base and more recently as a prison.
Drift Masters Conor and Jack Shanahan will do a Q&A alongside WRC star Josh McErlean, while the drivers' paddock will also be open to spectators keen to get a closer look at the action.
There are four Cork drivers among those set to compete at Red Bull Drift Pursuit - with Aidan Dennehy, Owen Magner, Trevor Healy and Alan Hynes.

Sport legends fundraise for Cork girl who lost legs on farm
Irish sporting icons have been fundraising for a 13-year-old Cork girl who lost both of her legs in a farm accident. The 'Stand for Féile' fundraiser has been joined by a broad range of sports stars after Féile O'Sullivan suffered the life-altering incident in which she suffered severe lower abdominal injuries. She has undergone around 30 operations and procedures, including the amputation of both legs. Former Kerry footballer and seasoned rugby player Mick Galwey is the latest sportsperson to support the fundraiser. He has joined with a number of GAA stars, including Cork's Patrick Horgan, All-Ireland winning Tipperary hurler Darragh Stakelum and Clare legend Anthony Daly, in posting videos of their support online. Féile's club, Garnish GAA, launched the appeal nine days ago with the permission of her family to help raise funds for her rehabilitation in the months and years ahead. The fundraiser has raised over €468,000 so far. The accident occurred just before Féile's 13th birthday and she has shown 'great strength and bravery' in the weeks since. Féile will require intensive care for months, followed by intensive rehabilitation, and a complete adjustment to a new way of life. The fundraiser states: 'Anyone lucky enough to know Féile will tell you how full of life, energy, fun, kindness and what a pure messer she is. 'She adores dogs and horses. Farming is in her blood, and she loves everything about nature, outdoors, staying active. 'She's also a true sports star – whether football, soccer, gymnastics, or anything involving movement and fun, Féile is always giving it her all, with a smile and a sparkle in her eyes. 'This accident hasn't changed who she is, but has just changed what she now needs.' Féile will require intensive care and rehabilitation. Garnish GAA Development Officer and Cork County Councillor Finbarr Harrington says they are overwhelmed by the response to their appeal saying it has been 'phenomenal'. He remarked: 'We are a very small club, in a small rural parish of Allihies on the Beara Peninsula, 100 miles from Cork and probably the furthermost pitch from Croke Park. 'The family are so grateful for this. We reached out to other GAA clubs in the Beara Division and further afield and to GAA stars, and they've really rowed in behind the challenge.' As well as the online challenge, fundraising events are also being organized locally from cakes sales to sea-kayaking. Harrington added that Féile is a 'unbelievably outgoing girl' and that every donation 'no matter how big or small will go directly towards Féile's care'. He said: 'She is going to face the challenge, but she has a long road ahead of her. The funds won't ease the pain of what has happened but it will take away the financial worry for her mum, Maureen.' Among the tributes paid to him since Monday's awful news broke, the Mark Kirk Running Group hailed him for being a "valuable member" of their training group. Their Facebook post read: "We have just heard today the very sad news of the death of Oisin Cassidy who was a valued member of the training group and one of the founder members of Candour Track Club. "'Cass' a master of fantasy football league will missed by all his teammates and running friends. Sincerest condolences to all his family circle." Furthermore, Rock Runners - who are a community-based run club in Derrylin - added a heartfelt tribute of their own. They reflected: "We were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend, Oisin Cassidy this morning. "Oisin was an exceptionally talented runner, both locally and nationally, representing Athletics NI in international competitions. He was also a proud multiple time winner of our very own 5K race. "Throughout his illness, Oisin showed remarkable strength, dignity, and kindness. GAA CLUB'S MEMORIES Throughout his childhood and adolescence he'd also represented the local GAA club who similarly paid their respects as the entire community came to terms with his life being cut short. Derrylin O'Connells hailed: "Our club is in shock and mourning at the tragic passing of Oisin Cassidy. "Oisin proudly represented our club at under age levels and was part of our Under 12 Division 1 league winning team in 2015. "Oisin a talented, humble and gifted athlete used his athletic prowess to occupy the midfield and wing half back positions in our teams. "Oisin would cover every blade of grass when he was on field, with surging runs his trademark. "Oisin had made a return to play with our senior team, unfortunately his diagnosis prevented him from playing with his friends. "He did however fulfil a vital role for our senior team last year by being our 'Stats man' a role he fulfilled with due diligence. "Our deepest condolences go out to Oisin's mother Veronica, the whole Cassidy family and Oisin's friends and teammates. "As a mark of respect all club activities will be postponed until after Oisin is laid to rest."
