'Wednesday' producers receive corporation tax credits of up to €60m

Irish Examiner2 days ago
The Irish-based co-production firm behind season two of the global Netflix ratings phenomenon Wednesday has received corporation tax credits here between €20m and €60m this year.
That is according to figures published by the Revenue Commissioners, which show that, in the second quarter of this year, Metropolitan Films International Ltd received corporation tax credits of €10m to €30m for "Nero Season 2B ( Wednesday)".
This followed Metropolitan Films International Ltd receiving tax credits of €10m to €30m for Nero season two in the first quarter of 2025. The producers have named the production "Nero" in a nod to the name of Wednesday's pet scorpion, Nero.
Based on the Addams Family character created by cartoonist Charles Addams in 1938, Netflix's supernatural mystery comedy focuses on the teen years of Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega.
The first part of season two of Wednesday was released on August 6, and set the record for being an English-language title ranked No 1 in the most countries at 91 in its first week.
The second part of Wednesday will be released on September 3, and seasons one — first broadcast in 2022 — and two are the two most popular shows on Netflix currently.
Season one of Wednesday was shot in Romania, and production transferred to Ireland in 2024 for season two.
'Truly magical' locations
The latest season of the gothic mystery show was shot at various locations around counties Wicklow, Dublin, and Offaly.
Executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have called the filming locations 'truly magical', with settings including Powerscourt Demesne in Enniskerry, Charleville Castle in Offaly and Dublin's atmospheric Deansgrange Cemetery.
Accounts for the Metropolitan Films International firm behind season two, Willow Hill S2 Production DAC, show that the production spend by the company in the six months to the end of April 2024 totalled €29.59m.
The number of people employed by the firm totalled 183, with staff costs amounting to €8.8m. Willow Hill is a reference to Willow Hill psychiatric hospital that features in the series.
Tourism Ireland has made "behind the scenes" films on Wednesday to use as marketing tools aimed at promoting the locations to tourists overseas.
Metropolitan Films International Ltd has received corporation tax credits totalling €46.1m for all of its productions in the 24 months to the end of April 2024.
Revenue figures also show that Wild Atlantic Pictures Ltd has received tax credits of between €5m and €10m for its Rainmaker TV series.
The figures also show that Metropolitan Films International received tax credits of €5m to €10m for its comedy thriller, How to get to Heaven from Belfast.
Due to be broadcast on Netflix, the showrunner for the production is Lisa McGee — who was the creator of the multi-award-winning Derry Girls.
Revenue confirmed in January that the value of overall payments made under the Section 481 film corporation tax credit scheme in 2024 was €121.63m.

Eurovision bosses announce city to host the 2025 song contest

RTE's Irish delegation is set to travel to Vienna for next year's Eurovision as the host city is revealed. Austria's capital was selected by national broadcaster ORF and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) following a competitive bid process. The Grand Final will be staged at the Wiener Stadthalle on Saturday 16 May, with Semi-Finals on Tuesday 12 and Thursday 14 May. This will be the third time Vienna has welcomed Eurovision. The city first hosted in 1967 after Udo Jürgens' victory the year before, and again in 2015 following Conchita Wurst's win. Next year's contest comes after Austria's JJ triumphed in Basel this May with Wasted Love, securing the country's third Eurovision crown. Martin Green, Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, said Vienna's reputation as "one of the most musical cities in the world" and its central European location made it the ideal choice. He added that the Stadthalle proved to be an "exceptional venue" when it staged the 60th edition. Vienna's mayor Michael Ludwig said the city would ensure events around the contest are accessible to everyone, while Tourism Director Norbert Kettner described Eurovision and Vienna as a "perfect match". Eurovision has delivered significant boosts to recent host cities, with Liverpool, Malmö and Basel all reporting major gains in tourism and international profile. Further details on events, participating countries and ticket sales will be announced in the coming months. It comes after we revealed RTE spent €385,000 for two weeks in Basel, sending Norwegian singer Emmy to the Eurovision Song Contest in May of this year. The national broadcaster forked out €50,785 for a hotel for 19 people who were part of the delegation who travelled to Switzerland in May. Emmy failed to secure a place for Ireland in the final with her tune Laika Party. A Freedom of Information request revealed production costs amounted to €79,242, transportation costs totalled €1,407, while €7,503 was spent on economy flights Basel. The FOI showed a total of €2,538 was spent on 'representation', while 'subsistence costs' were €12,079. RTE said: 'The cost associated with Eurovision is two fold; one is to produce an act to represent Ireland in the biggest entertainment show in the world, to a standard that we can be proud of in front of an audience of 166 million viewers, the other is to provide over nine hours of live entertainment to an Irish audience who watch the competition in large numbers. Irish designer has big hand with in-demand accessories in new series of Wednesday

Paula Rowan has big stars donning her striking fashion items The stars wearing the striking fashion items in the Netflix series include Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta Jones, Joanna Lumley and Lady Gaga. The second series of Wednesday hit the streaming platform earlier this month and was shot on location in Ireland in counties Dublin, Wicklow and Offaly. And the show's stylist did not have far to travel to pick up the gloves when he was here as they were found in designer Paula Rowan's boutique in Dublin's Westbury Mall. 'I work with a lot of celebrities and a lot of celebrity stylists, so my reputation has grown,' Paula, from Blackrock, Co Dublin, tells the Sunday World . Catherine Zeta 'It's not just a case of people casually stumbling upon me, the reputation has grown internationally, without sounding arrogant about that. 'And that's how they found me. They knew before they came over here. 'The costume designer that came in was English and he said that it had been recommended he speak with me before he came over here, so that's how it came about. 'They were for all the main characters in the show.' Paula smiles when asked if she's watched Wednesday and seen her creations on the show. Jenna Ortega 'I have indeed,' she says, adding that she's a fan of the show. 'I think it's great, I think it's amazing and I love anything by Tim Burton (the director), to be perfectly honest with you. It's that kind of ethereal avant garde – it's a good mixture and balance of both.' Among her famous clients down through the years are Taylor Swift, Madonna, Kate Middleton, Kendall Jenner, Kate Moss, Helen Mirren, Ariana Grande, Naomi Campbell, Julianne Moore, Princess Charlene of Monaco, Ronnie Wood, Martin Scorsese, Richard E Grant and Sabina Higgins. 'I've had some nice moments like that over the last few years,' she smiles. 'Basically, it's not just the case of stylists coming in. At this stage I've done all the gloves for House of Gucci. I'm in Vogue every month.' But Paula rarely gets to meet the stars who end up wearing her gloves. 'Unless they've walked into the shop and I would never say who or what — because that would be breaking confidentiality and probably GDPR and everything else — so I'd be quite private about people that I work with as well,' she says. Joey King wearing Paula's creations 'I only talk about it if it's out in the public arena in relation to what they're wearing, but I never get into the ins and outs of how or who or what or where. 'At the end of the day, I'm a small brand and when you're recognised internationally it's a testament to your work — it's very nice recognition.' Paula completed her studies at UCD and opened her boutique in the Westbury Mall in 2006, before she launched her first collection in 2008. When Madonna wore one of her gloves she requested to keep a black pair. 'They're elbow length ones and are called Montserrat gloves,' Paula says. Kendall Jenner also donned Paula's gloves in an Italian issue of Vogue . 'It was a huge spread and my gloves were in seven different shots — so a lot of that [demand] may be coming from that exposure,' she recalls. 'Kendall is one of the highest paid models in the world and when you have a figure as beautiful as that, both visually and the way she wears clothes — the effect that type of person has on your gloves is absolutely huge for any small brand. For me, it's a huge accolade.' Paula Rowan has a boutique at the Westbury Mall in Dublin Today's News in 90 Seconds - August 20th Paula's gloves continue to garner attention and she believes it's the quality of her products that sets her apart. 'They are photographed for the main Vogue fashion shoot pretty much every month at this point,' she confirms. The gloves are all made of high quality leather and lambskin and are manufactured in Naples. 'Each glove is made by hand and takes three months to produce,' she reveals. 'They are all handmade in Italy.' Prices vary from a couple of hundred euro for a pair to over €1,000. 'I'm a leather goods specialist,' Paula says. 'In the shop, I sell bags from other producers, smaller brands that people don't know. 'It's more about the quality and the finish of the leather. But the gloves are my main focus.' Wednesday is based on characters from the Addams Family cartoon created by Charles Addams. The first season of Wednesday, which was shot primarily in Romania, centred on Wednesday Addams as a student at Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts. She attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree, and solve a supernatural mystery from her parents' past, all the while building close friendships with her fellow students.
