UTSA sends No. 2 overall seed Texas to losers' bracket with 9-7 victory in Austin Regional

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — James Taussig went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to help UTSA send No. 2 overall seed Texas to the losers' bracket with a 9-7 come-from-behind victory at the Austin Regional on Saturday night.
Host Texas (43-13) will play No. 3 seed Kansas State in an elimination game Sunday. The winner would have to beat the Roadrunners (46-13) Sunday night and again on Monday to advance to the super regionals.
The Longhorns scored five runs in the third inning off UTSA starter Conor Myles and reliever Connor Kelley to take a 6-1 lead.
Nathan Hodge had a two-run single and Taussig doubled in the final of four runs in the fifth as the Roadrunners pulled within 6-5.
Hodge and Mason Lytle had RBI singles before Garrett Gruell doubled in a run as UTSA scored three more times in the sixth to grab an 8-6 lead.
Rylan Galvan hit a solo homer in the seventh to get the Longhorns within a run, but Taussig delivered a ninth-inning insurance run with a two-out single after Lytle's one-out double.
Kendall Dove (3-0) got the win with a scoreless fifth inning. Braylon Owens pitched the final four innings and allowed a run on a hit and four walks for his third save.
Max Grubbs (6-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs in 1 1/3 innings in relief of starter Luke Harrison, who yielded five runs — two earned — in 4 1/3.

Texas extends offer to elite in-state 2027 RB The Texas Longhorns and their staff had a busy weekend. They were evaluating some of the top prospects in the country, which included some of the top players in the Lone Star State. Enter four-star running back Lathan Whisenton of the 2027 class. Programs from all across Texas had extended offers to Whisenton before he hit Austin. Well, he can add the Longhorns to the list now as they have taken his total to 14 offers he announced via his social media. Whisenton is currently the No. 24 running back in the country and the No. 302 recruit overall per 247Sports composite rankings. The 6-foot, 195-pounder is also the No. 42 prospect out of Texas. The talent of Whisenton was seen right away as he was named the Texas District 12-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year as a freshman after racking up 512 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. It was a breakout campaign for Whisenton as he racked up 1,286 yards and scored 18 rushing touchdowns as well as 81 receiving yards. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes Texas to het Whisenton back on campus to improve their standing in his recruitment. The Blue Jays have reportedly not discussed any sort of contract extension with him, so this may be their chance to get something for him rather than watch him walk away. The Tigers offense has been strong this year, currently fourth in the league in runs and seventh in the league in hits. Adding a player like Bichette would certainly make the lineup better. "Bichette's gap-to-gap power would play well at Comerica Park and lengthen a lineup that has scored more runs than anticipated," wrote Passan. "After a homerless April, Bichette whacked seven home runs in May and slugged better than .500. The Tigers don't need much. With their prospect depth, though, they can afford a luxury item." If Detroit lands Bichette, the Tigers could then look to extend him at just 27 years old.
