BJP slams West Bengal govt. over arrest of influencer, calls action ‘selective enforcement'
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday (June 1, 2025) slammed the West Bengal government over the arrest of influencer Sharmishta Panoli, accusing the Trinamool Congress dispensation of targeting the 'young Hindu woman' to appease its vote bank.
According to sources, the West Bengal Police arrested 22-year-old Panoli from Haryana's Gurugram on Friday night for allegedly uploading a video with communal comments claiming Bollywood actors were silent on Operation Sindoor.
On Saturday, a court in Kolkata sent Ms. Panoli to judicial custody till June 13. The Instagram influencer has been booked on the charges of promoting enmity between different groups, engaging in malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, apart from intentional insult to provoke breach of peace.
Reacting sharply to Ms. Panoli's arrest, BJP co-incharge for West Bengal Amit Malviya accused the Trinamool Congress government of 'selectively enforcing' the law as part of its appeasement politics.
'Sharmishta Panoli, just 22 years old, has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody over a video she had already deleted and publicly apologised for on May 15,' Mr. Malviya wrote in a post on X.
There have been no reports of communal unrest linked to her remarks, yet the Kolkata Police is acting with 'uncharacteristic haste', he charged.
'Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself has made far more divisive statements, which have had far-reaching consequences, including tragic loss of life and destruction of property on multiple occasions,' he said and asked, 'Will the law be applied to her with the same urgency?'
'This isn't just a case in West Bengal. It reflects how a young Hindu woman is being targeted to appease a vote bank,' Mr. Malviya said.
Justice must not be 'politically convenient', the BJP leader said, adding that 'India is watching'.

Mumbai will have to wait longer for the dream robotic lifebuoys as the city's civic body scrapped its plan to procure Turkey-made bot. As per the initial plan, these remotely-operated rescue machines were sought for deployment across Mumbai's half-a-dozen beaches, an official informed PTI. This decision comes in the wake of backlash over Turkey's role in supporting Pakistan and India-Turkey fallout post Operation Sindoor. However, a change in plan was made after Turkey openly condemned India's action in response to April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Affirming the development related to procurement of robotic lifebuoys, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said that the civic body has scrapped the plan to procure robotic lifebuoys manufactured in Turkey. Designed to assist lifeguards, the robotic lifebuoys would have been a part of search and rescue operation to save people from drowning. Equipped with dual water jets, each unit of robotic lifebuoys possess a 10,000 mAh rechargeable battery. With a carriage capacity of 200 kg, these remotely-operated rescue machines can cover a distance of 800 metres into the sea at speeds up to 18 km/h. BMC officials further informed PTI that the bot can operate for about an hour after one charge. Following the deal with the Eurasian country, the BMC faced strong criticism from political parties. BJP and Shiv Sena leaders had questioned and condemned the procurement of the machine from foreign supplier and had insisted on promoting indigenous production.

BJP leader hits out at Karnataka govt over FIRs against Sangh leaders
Bengaluru, June 3 (UNI) Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly R Ashoka on Tuesday launched a blistering attack on the Congress government in Karnataka, accusing it of shielding anti-national elements while targeting Hindu voices under the guise of curbing hate speech. Reacting sharply to the FIRs registered against BJP MLC Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, Legislative Council chief whip N Ravikumar, and RSS ideologue Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat, Ashoka questioned the Congress government's silence during an earlier Assembly incident. "Where were you, Congress, when 'Pakistan Zindabad' was shouted in the Assembly? Were you eating mud?" Ashoka thundered. "Today, when our jawans are laying down their lives at the borders in Operation Sindhoor, you remain silent as some run social media campaigns in favour of Pakistan. But you rush to book FIRs against Hindu leaders," Ashoka said. Calling the Congress government one "without a shred of dignity or responsibility," the former minister alleged that law and order in Karnataka had collapsed under Siddaramaiah's leadership. Ashoka also charged the Congress with selectively persecuting Hindus. "If someone says 'Pakistan Zindabad', they are free to roam. But if I say 'I am a Hindu', you look at me with contempt. You need Hindu votes to win, you need Hindus to form the government, but suddenly we are not wanted anymore?" he said. Ashoka's remarks are expected to escalate the political confrontation in Karnataka, especially with Congress already facing flak over its recent moves to rein in right-wing rhetoric.
