Gene Hackman, Betsy Arakawa's Friends Reflect On 33-Year Marriage
Originally appeared on E! Online
Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa's romance was made for the movies.
Weeks after the Unforgiven star and his wife of 33 years were found dead in their New Mexico home Feb. 26, their friends shared a glimpse into their loving marriage.
"He was a gentle giant, very calm,' Kevin Bobolosky said of Gene in the March 18 documentary Last Days of Gene Hackman: ABC News Special. 'Betsy, I think, mostly did all the cooking and cleaning on this big estate out of love. She just adored him. So they had everything they wanted."
The real estate agent emphasized that their love was as strong as ever, adding that while visiting their home, 'She would sit on the couch and she would just jump into him.'
While Betsy—who was a classically trained pianist and skilled musician—was Gene's biggest supporter, the feelings were mutual, according to their pal Stephan Marshall.
'Betsy was just a lovely and charming woman,' he recalled. 'She had been with Gene since she was pretty young. He was very proud of her accomplishments. She had played with the Honolulu Philharmonic Orchestra.'

Betsy's official cause of death was from hantavirus—a pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory illness caused by a family of viruses that are transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents—Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza said in a March 7 press conference.
One week after her death at age 65, the 95-year-old's death was ruled as hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer's disease being a significant contributing factor.
The couple's friends speculated that Betsy, who was Gene's caretaker, likely didn't know how sick she was since hantavirus is so rare. (Only 122 cases have been reported in New Mexico from 1993 to 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Protection.)
'I'm sure if Betsy knew how sick she was, she would've had some backup help,' Stephen said. 'She probably thought she was going to get better. She wasn't worried about herself. She was worried about taking care of Gene.'
In fact, all of their friends emphasized how much the French Connection actor relied on his wife, whom he married in 1991.
'She was very protective of him,' Tim Allin told The New York Times March 8, noting that Gene often said that without Betsy, he likely would've died 'long ago.'
As he put it, 'She just really looked after him.'

Boston University Addresses Alex Cooper Sexual Harassment Allegations
Originally appeared on E! Online Boston University is speaking out. After Alex Cooper—who played soccer for the college from 2013 to 2015—accused her former coach Nancy Feldman of sexual harassment in her new docuseries Call Her Alex, the educational institution addressed her allegations. "Boston University has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment," the university shared in a statement to E! News June 13. "We have a robust system of resources, support and staff dedicated to student wellbeing and a thorough reporting process through our Equal Opportunity Office." The statement continued, "We encourage members of our community to report any concerns, and we remain committed to fostering a safe and secure campus environment for all." Following the release of her docuseries June 10, which details the alleged abuse she experienced, Cooper further slammed the university and Feldman for the alleged mishandling of the situation. "Nancy Feldman was someone I trusted," she wrote on Instagram June 12. "Someone I believed in. Someone who was supposed to help me grow. Someone who was supposed to protect me. But instead, she made my life a living hell and abused her power over me." More from E! This defined my life for a decade and impacted her life 0%," the Call Her Daddy podcast host alleged. "There was no accountability, no investigation, and no justice." E! News has reached out to Feldman for comment and has not yet heard back. Neither Feldman nor BU has publicly responded to Cooper's allegations. After learning that others said they had, and allegedly continue, to experience similar harassment—despite Nancy retiring from BU in 2022—Cooper said she wanted to share her story. She had previously made similar comments during a Tribeca Film Festival panel last week, where she alleged that she "found out" the "harassment" was allegedly continuing at the institution. "When this initially happened to me I felt like I had no voice," she continued in her caption. "But that is no longer the case. Now I'm coming for all of you who abused your power over innocent young individuals." In the series, Cooper, now 30, alleged that Feldman "really starting to fixate" on her, more than her teammates. She added, "It was all based in her wanting to know who I was dating, her making comments about my body and her always wanting to be alone with me." She accused Feldman of playing a "psychotic game of, 'You wanna play? Tell me about your sex life, I have to drive you to your night class, get in the car with me alone.'" "If I didn't follow this woman's rules," she said, "I was gone." For the latest breaking news updates, click here to download the E! News App

Fact Check: Debunking rumor Keanu Reeves, Johnny Depp bought country club after being denied entry
Claim: After being denied entry and banned from a country club, actors Keanu Reeves and Johnny Depp bought the property on the spot. Rating: In June 2025, posts appeared on social media alleging that after being denied entry at a country club, actors Keanu Reeves and Johnny Depp purchased the club on the spot without any evidence to corroborate the claim. The assertion was false. The false rumor was spread in posts on Facebook detailing the supposed event, with photos and links to unreliable news sites. Both the story and the images showed signs of being created by artificial intelligence (AI) tools like DALL-E or Chat GPT. Without naming a source for its information, one post sharing the claim began: "Maybe you two should stick to mini-golf—less dress code drama there." The remark, intended as a jab, struck a nerve with Depp, who has faced public humiliation before, notably during his 2022 defamation trial with Amber Heard. Reeves, ever the peacemaker, attempted to diffuse the situation, but Depp's eyes narrowed as he retorted, "I've been kicked out of better places than this." Turning to Reeves, he added, "What do you say, Keanu? Should we buy this place?" Reeves, with a mischievous grin, replied, "Why not?" What happened next defied all expectations.... There was no evidence to support the assertion that Depp and Reeves bought a country club after being denied entry. If, hypothetically speaking, there was even a sliver of truth to the claim — for instance, if there was evidence Reeves or Depp owned a country club in the first place — that information could be found in place of public record and reliable entertainment publications would have reported it. That had not happened. In short, the claim appeared to be made up from whole cloth for the purpose of gaining clicks, or views, online, in order to earn advertising revenue, like other claims Snopes has previously covered. This was not the first misleading rumor related to Reeves or Depp that captured social media users' attention. For example, we previously debunked the false claim that Reeves debated tech billionaire Elon Musk about artificial intelligence, an assertion that was also spread with the help of AI tools. Christensen, Laerke. "No Proof Keanu Reeves Debated Elon Musk about AI." Snopes, 10 Apr. 2025, Liles, Jordan. "Did Green Bay Packers Reject Ad for Musk's Tesla Electric Vehicles at Lambeau Field?" Did Beyoncé Honor Rarely-Seen Sir With Special Nod That Fans Almost Missed At Cowboy Carter Show?
knows just how to shine the spotlight on her son, Sir Carter, despite keeping him away from the public eye. Amid her ongoing "" tour, the record-breaking singer took time out to celebrate her twins, Rumi and Sir Carter, turning eight years old. However, beyond the public spectacle, Beyoncé paid a special tribute to her only son, who has faced attacks from celebrities like . During the fourth stop of the Cowboy Carter tour in London, Beyoncé shone the spotlight on her younger kids, making the day all about them. While Rumi was present on stage to receive all the love from thousands of fans, her brother, Sir, is often kept away from the spotlight. Nevertheless, Queen B made sure his presence was felt throughout. Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the microphone stand during Thursday's show had a rubber duckling charm attached to it. A recording of the singer belting out the tune to "Alligator Tears" while the charm swung around has since circulated on social media. "The duck on the mic stand today and Bey saying 'peanut butter jelly' during the last show. Did she lose a bet with Rumi and Sir?" the user speculated on X. However, it didn't take long for the Beyhive to unravel the mystery behind the hidden gesture. Fans referenced a revelation from Tina Knowles' 2025 memoir, "The Matriarch," where she allegedly shared one of her grandsons' favorite hobbies. "Ms Tina said Sir gets up early and goes to the swing [and] feeds the ducks. He loves it in the Hamptons," a user explained. "Loves his books and loves to spell, she said." The doting grandmother previously mentioned that Sir is an avid reader in a March 2025 interview with E! News. Ms. Knowles said the introverted preschooler has a favorite story about 'the smallest tree being the most powerful tree." The famous momager explained, "It ends up being the most powerful tree and saving the day, and he loves that book!" Ms. Knowles further noted that while her grandson is reserved, he is "very, very smart" and "does all of the numbers stuff." While Queen Bey rarely speaks about her children, there is no doubt they are the center of her world. She made that obvious on June 12 when she called on fans at the Tottenham Hotspur studio to celebrate her twins. "Everybody say happy birthday, Rumi," the 43-year-old urged the roaring crowd. Beyoncé was in full mother mode as she sweetly hugged Rumi, the celebrant, while big sister Blue Ivy stood by her right. The little one seemed thrilled about the shout-out from fans. "Say happy birthday, Sir! Mommy loves you," the 35-time Grammy winner continued, as seen in the clip shared on social media. Beyoncé then dotingly planted a sweet kiss on Rumi before continuing her performance. Following the serenade, the 8-year-old, who joins her mom and sister on stage for "Protector," was seen getting super emotional as Blue Ivy escorted her off stage. The global popstar welcomed her twins, Sir and Rumi Carter, in June 2017 alongside her husband, Jay-Z. Beyoncé didn't confirm the news of her twins' arrival until July, when she marked their first month's birthday on Instagram with their first-ever photos. Although not in the limelight like their big sister, the twins feature in some of their mother's famous projects. Beyoncé's 2020 "Black Is King" visual album was dedicated to her son, Sir. Rumi, on the other hand, was featured on her country album, "Cowboy Carter." She has also been a part of the ongoing tour since its first show in April 2025. Rumi and Sir's eighth birthday celebration comes months after Kanye West publicly attacked the twins amid his feud with Jay-Z. The disgraced rapper, who has a bone to pick with the power couple missing his 2014 wedding to Kim Kardashian, unleashed an offensive tirade on X. In since-deleted tweets, the Donda Academy founder wrote, "WAIT, HAS ANYONE EVER SEEN JAY Z AND BEYONCE'S YOUNGER KIDS(?)." He added, "THEY'RE RETARDED. NO LIKE LITERALLY, AND THIS IS WHY ARTIFICIAL INSEMNATION IS SUCH A BLESSING. HAVING RETARDED CHILDREN IS A CHOICE." West has since apologized to Jay-Z for using a slur to describe his twins. "I'm sorry, Jay Z. I be feeling bad about my tweet, but I still feel I gave my life to this industry, and thought so many people were my family but when I needed family on some real sh-t, none of these rap n—s had my back," he wrote.
