Hollyoaks rapped by Ofcom over ‘shameless' scenes that left fans fuming

The financial tech brand was name-checked in dialogue and prominently shown on screen.
Now, media regulator Ofcom has upheld those concerns, ruling the segment broke guidelines around undue prominence and promotional content.
Rule 9.10 of the broadcasting code states that "references to placed products, services and trade marks must not be unduly prominent", while Rule 9.9 adds they "must not be promotional".
In the episode, Ste Hay — played by Kieron Richardson — is seen discussing the app with his son Lucas, portrayed by
Oscar
Curtis, as they consider buying a new laptop.

Ste pulls out his phone, opens the ClearScore app, and explains: 'See this? They've shown me some options – based on my financial situation and it looks like I can get you that laptop for your studies.'
He then tells Lucas: 'I really want you to make a go of this, Lucas – (gesturing to the ClearScore app on his phone) and these guys are going to help me make it happen.'
The regulator concluded the segment felt more like a demonstration than a natural part of the storyline — and effectively acted as a promotion for the brand.
Channel 4 admitted the app was featured as part of a product placement deal, separate to ClearScore's existing sponsorship of the show. However, it insisted the inclusion was 'editorially justified'.

In a submission to Ofcom, the broadcaster said: 'Part of the sponsorship and product placement agreements [was that] potential integrations into existing storylines were proposed to ClearScore by the programme editorial team, in consultation with the programme compliance team.'
It also stressed: 'ClearScore had no editorial input into the storyline of the programme.'

The plot at the time revolved around Ste rebuilding his family life after losing a partner and spending a year in a coma.
Channel 4 said his return to work and efforts to reconnect with his son were central themes — with financial struggles part of the arc.

But Ofcom wasn't convinced. It concluded that the references to ClearScore exceeded what was justified by the storyline and became promotional in nature.
A Channel 4 spokesperson responded to the ruling: 'We acknowledge Ofcom's decision and will
review
its findings carefully. Our compliance responsibilities are of paramount importance to us and we will continue to engage with Ofcom and our partners to ensure our content remains compliant.'
The moment also sparked fury online, with some fans complaining over the blatant advertising.

One viewer wrote at the time: "Not the ClearScore ad in #Hollyoaks, couldn't have been more obvious if they tried."
Another reacted to the scene, saying: 'Ste and this ClearScore product placement is so weird.'

Meanwhile, a third viewer shared their frustration: "Is the ClearScore advert really starting to aggravate anyone else or is it just me?"
A spokesperson for Channel 4 said that all of the product placement on Channel 4 programming adheres to the relevant regulation, and is not connected to show budgets.
They added: 'Product placement is a long established part of many TV shows, as well as content on other platforms. ClearScore is a natural fit with Hollyoaks which attracts viewers who, like the show's beloved characters, face financial challenges in the current economic climate.'
Channel 4 announced the ClearScore sponsorship last year, with the partnership going live in October.

The deal includes ClearScore idents across Hollyoaks episodes on E4, Channel 4, and streaming platforms, as well as ads on Channel 4's YouTube channel.
The agreement, brokered by Medialab and creative agency And Rising, also includes in-show product placement as part of the licensing arrangement.
Hollyoaks has previously been known for addressing serious social issues, and the addition of product integration comes amid wider industry budget pressures.
Budget cuts at the corporation has seen the episode order slashed to just three 20 minute episodes per week and a mass cull of cast and crew.

In September, it aired a dramatic year-long time jump to explain the huge changes to the cast and relaunch the show as a three-nights a week soap.
An insider said: "There's a worry high profile cast members may see this as an opportunity to leave the show.
"While they're all very supportive of the soap, the reduced budget and seeing friends and colleagues leave after so many years takes its toll."

Toni and Cach reveal surprising plans for £50k Love Island prize which sets them apart from other Islanders

Your average twenty-something would splurge £50k on holidays, cars and clothes - but not Love Island's newest champions, Toni Laites and Cach Mercer. The lovebirds, both 24, instead have far more humdrum things in mind for their loot. 6 Toni Laites and Cach Mercer have revealed what they will be doing with their Love Island winnings Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 6 The winning pair celebrate with Maya Jama, but won't be splurging their winnings on a shopping spree Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 6 Maya announcing the pair winners of the latest Love Island season Credit: Shutterstock Editorial Toni, who is a Las Vegas cabana waitress, said: 'I need to pay off my student loans. I want to invest it. I don't want to go on some crazy shopping spree.' Cach, a dancer from London, agreed: 'Cost of living crisis, I'll save it!' It comes despite making history, with American Toni being the ITV2 show's first ever international bombshell to win. She entered on the first night of this summer's series and coupled up with Cach a month later, during Casa Amor. Toni said: 'I feel like I'm representing a whole nation! I didn't expect to make it past week one. 'Hopefully now we will just find time to enjoy one another's company and not let everything else take over.' Cach added: 'It feels amazing to win. I was 100 per cent authentically myself and luckily the public liked it, so I'm buzzing. 'I appreciate every moment on the show, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I wouldn't have done it any other way.' Toni will be remembered as one of the series 'Big Three' - a name coined by fans for her trio of friends, with Shakira Khan and Yasmin Pettet who came second and third respectively. Toni added: 'Friends I will have for life. That was a big takeaway. The girls were my rock for the eight weeks.' Cach and Toni WIN Love Island and bag £50k as raunchiest ever series ends She'll be spending more time with Cach than the girlies, though, as I can reveal ITV are set to offer the couple a spin-off show which follows their transatlantic relationship as they navigate love outside the villa. 6 Toni is the show's first ever international bombshell to win Credit: Shutterstock Editorial A source said: 'Even without the win, Cach and Toni's story should make great TV just due to their exciting lives. It will also be a chance to include Shakira and Yasmin when they visit Toni and catch up on the outside.' Shakira, 22, had a rocky journey in the villa but came runner-up with bad boy Harry Cookesley, 30. She said: 'The best romance of the series for me is Toni and Yas. Absolute weapons. I love those girls to bits. 'They will be bridesmaids at my wedding and godmothers of my children. I couldn't have done a day without them.' No mention of Harry, there, though… probably for the best. He told the That Gaby Roslin podcast: 'When Elizabeth and I met, she was magnificent, she is the person a young gay man would want to marry before realising he would have to do geography he wasn't interested in. 'She was wearing this gold magnificence which she is wearing in the [show] promo in the coffin. "I started talking and she said, 'Are you talking to my breasts?' I said, 'Yes, actually I am'. 'Well, it would be absurd not to, since they are there. I mean, 'Are you looking at the Alps?!'' Prime Video thriller The Terminal List: Dark Wolf drops on August 27. My blood ran cold as Sex and the City's Mr Big groped me during horror interview… what followed was even more chilling

Journalist Polly Hudson reveals how she saw a different side of star during their meeting that left her feeling 'dazed and violated' GRIM ORDEAL My blood ran cold as Sex and the City's Mr Big groped me during horror interview… what followed was even more chilling SMILING for the camera alongside one of my TV idols, I felt a sudden hand on my chest and time stood still. I had just been groped by Sex And The City's 'Mr Big' Chris Noth - whose behaviour up to that point had been a world away from his suave TV persona - but it was what happened next that truly turned my blood cold. Advertisement 6 Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth in Sex and the City: The Movie Credit: Getty 6 Five women have accused Chris Noth of sexual abuse Credit: Getty Last week, many fans were surprised when Sarah Jessica Parker wrote a lengthy farewell message to the franchise following the cancellation of spin-off series And Just Like That, but failed to mention her former on-screen soulmate. However, I was more bemused by subsequent newspaper coverage suggesting the actor, 70 - who has denied accusations of sexual abuse by five women - could be the "forgotten victim" of the #MeToo movement. I know what kind of man Chris Noth is - after one shocking encounter which left me feeling dazed and violated. Advertisement I met Noth during the peak of Sex And The City, when the episodes were on Channel 4 on Friday nights, and women got together with friends to watch over a Cosmopolitan or two every week. Like most other females in their twenties, I was a huge fan, so extremely excited to be sent to interview Mr Big for the celebrity magazine I was working for at the time. It was a press junket in a posh London hotel, one journalist after another getting a precious 20 minutes with a star to maximise their publicity time. I was expecting Noth to be like his character, impossibly suave and charismatic. Instead the man I was greeted by acted like a teenage doofus, with a very immature sense of humour. He was less Big, more Beavis and Butthead. I was disappointed of course, but this was far from the first celebrity I'd encountered who was nothing like their public persona, so fine. We wrapped up the interview just as the next journalist was being led in and by coincidence it was a good friend of mine. Advertisement This was the days before everyone had a smartphone in their pocket, but she'd brought along a polaroid camera, and offered to take a quick picture of me and Noth before I left. He hadn't been what I'd hoped, but he was still Mr Big, so of course I wasn't going to pass up the opportunity. He stood behind me for the photo, and as my friend prepared to take it, he giggled like a 14-year-old and cupped his hands in front of my chest, in a way that would make it look like he was holding my boobs in the picture. Shamed Chris Noth makes first Hollywood appearance after being axed from Sex And The City over sex assault claims I felt uncomfortable, but I was very young, and he wasn't actually touching me so I didn't say anything. There was a problem with the camera, it didn't work, so my mate told us we'd have to try again. This time, perhaps emboldened by my silence, just before she pressed the button, he grabbed my chest for real. My blood went cold. Everything started to happen in slow motion, but the following moments were even more troubling. Advertisement Wall of silence I waited for someone, anyone in the crowded room - one of his handlers, someone in charge, a proper grown-up – to say something. No one did. My friend and I exchanged astonished glances. I think we were both in shock. I often wonder which one of us felt worse; her, watching me stumble from the room in a daze, holding a photo of myself being felt up against my will, an expression on my face I'd never seen before captured on film. Or me, having to leave her with him. I threw the photo in the bin. If you'd have asked me before that day if there was any chance I would EVER chuck a picture of myself with anyone from Sex And the City I would have laughed in your face. No way! 6 Polly Hudson interviewed Noth for a celebrity magazine she was working for during the peak of Sex And the City Credit: Polly Hudson Advertisement 6 Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis have released a joint statement about the allegations against Chris Noth Credit: Alamy Five women have since accused Chris Noth of sexual assault, which he 'categorically denies'. Responding to the allegations further in 2023, Noth insisted that any sexual encounters he was involved in were consensual. However, his character was written out of And Just Like That in the wake of the claims and his final appearance was later edited out. He was also sacked from his role in The Equalizer. At the time, Sex and The City's Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis released a joint statement saying: 'We are deeply saddened to hear the allegations against Chris Noth. Advertisement "We support the women who have come forward and shared their painful experiences. We know it must be a very difficult thing to do and we commend them for it.' No consequences Clearly what happened to me is barely worth mentioning in comparison to what these women say they went through. But I saw – felt – what Chris Noth was capable of in a crowded room full of people, while ostensibly working, and how unconcerned about any consequences he appeared. 6 Tara Wilson and Noth have been married since 2012 Credit: Getty 6 Noth's character was written out of And Just Like That in the wake of the allegations Credit: HBO Max Advertisement Hardly shocking that SJP doesn't want to speak or write about him. I presume she wants to distance herself from him as much as possible. Let's hope that just like the spin-off, he is cancelled, for good. Chris Noth told The Sun in a statement: 'What is described by the reporter allegedly took place during a press junket 25 years ago and I honestly have no recollection of it. This was also previously raised by The Daily Mirror in 2022, and I didn't remember it then either. 'From this journalist's description, it sounds like a replicate of a rather popular photo from an entertainment magazine that I took years ago with Sarah Jessica Parker. 'I'm not sure if that was the intent but either way I am very sorry if I made the journalist uncomfortable. That certainly was not my intent."
