DWP issues Energy Support Scheme scam text alert to everyone who pays bills
The DWP - the Department for Work and Pensions - has warned people to be alert for a scam that could drain their bank account. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the government department's official account warned to "beware" of scams, specifically claiming to be from the body.
Talking about the fraudulent scheme - suggesting it's aimed at people who need help with bills - the DWP confirmed that it's fake. Genuine help with energy bills can be found through the official GOV.UK website.
The DWP posted on X: "Beware: If you get a text about an 'Energy Support Scheme' it is a scam Find out how to report and recover from any suspicious texts, phone calls, or emails via Stop! Think Fraud."
Linking to their official Stop! Think Fraud website - all about how to stay safe from scams - the experts note: "Nobody is immune from fraud. The criminals behind it target people online and in their homes, often emotionally manipulating their victims before they steal money or personal data.
"But there is something we can do. By staying vigilant and always taking a moment to stop, think and check whenever we're approached, we can help to protect ourselves and each other from fraud. "
How to spot a fake text message
Talking about scams, the government site sets out how to spot a fake text message.
The purpose of a fraudulent message - whether sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or another messaging platform - is typically to trick you into clicking a link. This link often leads to a bogus website designed to steal your personal information, money, or infect your device with malware.
Fake texts are usually short and simple - but scammers use clever tricks to make them seem convincing. They can even "spoof" the sender's number, making it appear as if the message is coming from a trusted source, like your bank, within the same conversation thread.
However, there are a number of signs that the message might be fake, so here's how to spot a suspicious message. The experts urge people to be wary if you see:
an 'irresistible' product offer or prize from a number or company you don't know
an urgent alert about security, for example claiming your bank account details have been compromised
a message about a product or service you haven't purchased or requested
a delivery company demanding you pay a fee before they deliver a parcel
an appeal from a family member asking you to send money
encouragement to click on an unknown link – if you're not sure, visit the organisation's website directly rather than clicking through
a request for you to share personal data
language designed to create a sense of urgency or panic
messages sent outside normal business hours, especially if they're very late at night or very early in the morning
What do I do if I get a scam text?
break the contact – don't reply, click on any links, or make any payments
check if it's genuine: contact the person or company directly, using a phone number you already have and know is correct
forward the message for free to 7726
What to I do if I've replied to the scam text?
The experts stress: "Don't panic! What you do next depends on whether you've replied, clicked a link, sent information or made a payment."

Woman discovers she is one of three wives before husband arrested
Tonya Betsey met Henry Betsey, Jr on Tinder, and the two were married in 2020. A woman turned sleuth and uncovered a devastating dual deception about her spouse - which eventually resulted in his detention. Tonya Betsey encountered Henry Betsey, Jr through Tinder, and the pair wed at the Duval County Courthouse in Jacksonville, US, on November 24, 2020. "Meeting on a dating site and the way he portrayed himself, he sold the perfect person, when in reality he was none of those things," she cautioned. Regrettably, it wasn't long before Tonya realised she wasn't the sole woman in Henry's existence. His betrayals emerged when she began investigating her husband's name through county court records, making the startling revelation that he possessed marriage certificates to two additional women. Henry had wed his second spouse Brandy two years following his ceremony with Tonya, in February 2022. Just months afterwards, a third woman, Michele, encountered Henry on the dating platform and they exchanged vows at a courthouse in Hernando County in November 2022, having known each other for merely three weeks, reports the Mirror. "I just started county by county, putting in his name. And that's when I came up with the marriage to Michele and the marriage to Brandy," Tonya revealed to WFTS. Betsey Jr. hadn't obtained divorces or annulments before remarrying, and no database exists that cross-references Florida marriage licences between counties. The spouses collectively hold Florida accountable for failing to cross-check marriage certificates across different counties. Michele stated: "There are no safeguards, and I feel like that's part of where the system failed,". Tonya further remarked: "If the counties did talk, it would have saved me a lot of heartache, a lot of money, a lot of stress,". Betsey Jr. entered a guilty plea to the felony bigamy charge in May. During this week's sentencing proceedings, he expressed remorse for simultaneously wedding three women. "First and foremost, I want to apologise to the ladies and I want to apologise to the court administration and to my family and friends that had to be involved in this. Because ultimately this is something that I didn't wish to be part of," he said. Given Henry's clean criminal record - and with a separate Virginia case still pending - the judge outlined the legal constraints on the punishment he could deliver. Judge Charles B. Merritt, Jr. declared: "I'm going to adjudicate him guilty of the bigamy offense, which is gonna make him a convicted felon," and "I'm gonna sentence him to two years' probation with 8 days credit for time served. You're gonna have to do a mental health evaluation, complete a certified battery intervention program." Betsey's ex-wives and their relatives expressed disappointment that Henry avoided prison time - though they welcomed the chance to move on from the traumatic experience. "While I respect the court's decision and understand the reasoning behind the sentence, I can't say I was completely satisfied with the outcome. I had hoped for a stronger sentence," Tonya expressed in a statement. "That said, I recognise that the judge weighed all the factors involved, and I accept the decision, even if it wasn't what I had expected. "While it was not jail time, the fact that he is a convicted felon, that speaks mountains and I feel like that's vindication on our part," Michele added.

Cops have since seized 16 dogs from a property near where the attack happened Tracy's mother, Maria Azpeitia, said: 'I got close to her and [she asked me] 'Mom, am I still pretty?' and I said, 'Yeah, you're beautiful'.' The teenager had been walking to a workout centre in Newberry Springs, California, when the dogs pounced on her. The Mirror reports that a hero neighbour heard her screaming and quickly called emergency services. Maria told ABC7: 'I thought they ripped her arms off. That's what it looked like. 'I didn't know who she was. She was so dirty, covered in dirt, so I couldn't recognise my daughter. I recognised her bra, that's what I recognised. 'I thought she was going to be fine because she walks to her bus stop every morning. I never thought anything would happen to her.' Tracy's stepdad, Carlos Ramirez, revealed the teen needed 500 stitches for the bites and cuts she received from the animals. He said: 'It was not one dog or two dogs, it was a lot. I mean, they bit every part of her body you could think of except for her ankles.' The teenager has been released from hospital but her parents say she cannot walk on her own due to her injuries. A GoFundMe page has been set up by Tracy's family to help fund her medical costs and help with her recovery. It stated: 'She was getting ready to do her senior year of high school this year. 'Now, because of this, she has to stay home and go to several doctor's appointments and rehab. Due to the trauma, she cannot sleep at night; she's having nightmares.'
