Netflix shines light on Toxic Town true story of Corby scandal
"One of the mothers has been in touch... It's kind of the talk of the town. People are excited about it," he said."For them, the mothers and these children, to have their story told... it's amazing. It's something that's been buried for a long time in terms of people's perception."
In the drama, the Downton Abbey star plays Roy Thomas, a fictional Corby borough councillor. The 62-year-old actor explained that, like many in the town, his family had moved from Scotland to work at the Corby Steelworks, which in 1979, just before its closure, had about 10,000 employees."When I was born in Corby, 80% of the population of that town had been born in Scotland," he said."My granny and granddad came down from Bellshill, which is a mining community outside Glasgow. They never lost their accent because you're in amongst it, you know?"
Members of his family, including his brother, still live and work in the area."My brother asked 'Is there any craic in this?'" he laughed."On the surface it's very bleak... but in the documentary [the Horizon programme on the case] you see the women they talk to and there's great spirit and humour and great craic."I think Jack [Thorne, writer of the drama] has captured that brilliantly."
For executive producer Annabel Jones, humour was an important part of the storytelling. She said: "Corby is known for its sense of humour; known for its warmth. I wanted to make sure that comes across through the characters as well, because I want it to feel true to Corby."I didn't want it to feel that people didn't have a sense of hope at that time."
The Emmy and Bafta-winning Welsh producer first heard about the scandal while in lockdown during the pandemic.A friend, from Corby, told her about the case while they were on a masked-up walk in a park. She recalled: "I was absolutely gobsmacked that, firstly, I have never heard of this story, and secondly, why have I never heard of this story?"This really needs to be pulled into the public consciousness; we need to be made aware so things like this don't happen again."
From that point, the 53-year-old began speaking to as many people involved in the case as possible to ensure their stories were told story accurately. One of the nuances of the adaptation is the Corby accent, which Coyle compared to a "diluted" Scottish accent. He said: "It's an odd one but I can recognise it anywhere. I've been on a tube before and been like 'Are you from Corby?' There is nothing like it."The executive producer added: "It's such a particular accent because obviously Corby has lots of different influences... We did work with lots of accent coaches to try and perfect it."Jodie Whittaker really worked hard. It was probably the thing she was most nervous about. When she met with Susan she very kindly reassured her and told her she'd done a good job."
Other members of the cast met or emailed the people they played to help craft their performance. However, this was not an option for Robert Carlyle. The man he portrayed, Corby borough councillor Sam Hagen, died in October 2022, a year before filming began. To help, the production team sourced hours of video footage in which the real-life politician told his story.Carlyle, who starred in The Full Monty, said: "He's got a straight kind of voice; a slightly higher kind of Glasgow man that talks like that... I thought... 'That just sounds like my dad.'"I thought 'There's elements here of my dad in Sam' and that was my way in."
The Trainspotting actor described his character as "a hero with a small h" who "fundamentally wants Corby to succeed".Carlyle said: "He was determined to make the best of his life down there to try and regenerate this town. He's the kind of man who made sure the traffic lights are working correctly and there's a zebra crossing in the right place."He does the right thing. It's lovely; a lot of my characters aren't like that. It's nice to have a chance to play somebody who is inherently good."
Castmate Rory Kinnear, who played solicitor Des Collins, explained the show never made a judgement on any of the characters, one way or the other "Everyone believes they're doing the right thing," he said."It allows an audience to decide whether they think those people did do the right things at the right time for the right reason."
Kinnear did not speak to the real-life lawyer while preparing for the role.He said: "The choice of casting me means they were taking it in a slightly different way. I knew they were creating a version of Des in terms of age; in terms of look; in terms of lots of other things"The real Des Collins, however, thought the Bond actor's portrayal was very close to the truth: "He got me down to a tee. He was more me than I am," he said."I ended up on a couple of occasions, having seen it, saying 'Oh, I wish said that' and then I realised it wasn't me doing it, it was Rory Kinnear pretending to be me."
The actor hopes the drama will get people talking. "As the sibling of a disabled person myself, one is well aware that they are not at the forefront of public interest," he said."What excites me about this is, not just the story itself, but the fact Netflix are doing it and it's a departure for them to do a four-part series like this of this subject matter."You could well imagine this being on late on BBC2 or Channel 4, and 250,000 loved it and watched it, but it doesn't have any impact."I think Netflix's ambition with it is to make sure it's something everybody watches, talks about and is made aware of."
BBC Radio Northampton has produced an eight-part documentary series called In Detail: The Toxic Waste Scandal, which will be available for download on 4 March.

Love Is Blind UK fans heartbroken as star leaves fiance in tears to go on night out
Love Is Blind UK fans were in shock as one star was reduced to tears by her fiance's behaviour. *Warning - This article contains spoilers for Love Is Blind UK season 2 episode 7.* Love Is Blind UK has returned for another four episodes today and fans are already calling out one star for his questionable behaviour on the Netflix show. In episode 7, plenty of drama unfolded, as the engaged couples were reunited with past flames from the pods in a reunion party. While some contestants kept it civil, others were engaging in behaviour that was branded 'disrespectful' by some of their fellow Love Is Blind co-stars. 28-year-old health coach Javen was particularly bold, openly flirting with rejected contestants Sophie and Aanu while his fiancee Katisha attempted to put on a brave face. In the episode aptly titled 'You're going to get me in trouble', which refers to Javen's comment to Aanu during the party, he was heard telling Sophie: 'I'd be lying if I sat here and said, '100%.'' He also asked her if she 'lived far from here' and told her: 'You're naughty.' However, things got tense an hour later when they returned home, with Katisha looking visibly upset as Javen announced he was going back out to meet up with some of the cast. Things quickly turned emotional and Javen left the house without Katisha for his night out, with the 31-year-old nanny and makeup artist bursting into tears. In the scene at their flat, Katisha was quiet as they ate dinner, with Javen remarking: 'It was good to see everyone.' 'How was your chat with Sophie?' she asked despondently as Javen replied with a smile: 'It was interesting. She's funny and she has good banter.' 'I see,' Katisha replied as Javen also said it was 'interesting' to chat to Demola, Katisha's other love interest from the pods. 'Interesting in what way?' Katisha snapped, as Javen cryptically responded: 'In the way that I was intrigued to know.' 'Ok, I'm going to go to bed; I'm very tired. Goodnight,' Katisha stated sadly, kissing Javen on the cheek. Javen could then be seen texting someone on his phone before announcing: 'I'm going out.' The camera then cut to Katisha lying down and looking upset as her fiance made arrangements for his night out over the phone. 'You staying in?' he asked, as Katisha once again confirmed: 'Yeah.' 'I'll see you later,' Javen said casually, putting on his jacket as he headed out. Katisha then immediately broke down in tears and covered her face with her hand as the episode cut to black. The episode provoked a heartbroken reaction from viewers, with fans taking to X to share their thoughts. It's just so sad to see.' They also observed: 'As men are we just oblivious to how our partner is feeling?? When Javen came back from the mixer could he not see that Katisha was not okay? 'With my girl I instantly know when she's not okay. And in that moment my mind goes into overdrive thinking about.. ' Another person tweeted: 'Did I watch this right? Did Javen go cheat non challantly in front of Katisha? That's literally next level losery. If that wasn't editing (even so, he left while she was distraught after his behaviour), then again, what a loser.' A third penned: 'Katisha is better than me, l would not even kiss you goodnight especially after disrespecting me like that.' One more fumed: 'WHY THE HELL IS JAVEN PULLING SOPHIE FOR A CHAT?? IN FRONT OF KATISHA? IN FRONT OF EVERYBODY?! 'Are you dating anybody?' 'you don't live far from here right?' Then he leaves her at home to cry alone?' However, some fans didn't have a lot of sympathy for Katisha due to the choice she made in the pods, with one commenting: 'Seeing Katisha cry over this loser, I can't even feel sorry for her cause she had a guy who made it clear he wanted to love her right but she she said nahhh.' Another agreed: 'Katisha ruined her own experience. Even if she didn't pick Demola, she knew she never got that reassurance from Javen and still picked him>' Meanwhile, another fan implored Katisha to get out of the relationship, writing with crying emojis: ' Katisha, please RUN there's still time.' Is it curtains for Katisha and Javen? Keep watching to find out. Love Is Blind UK season 2 episodes 1-8 are available to watch on Netflix now.

Bridgerton creator drops huge announcement about show's future as she arrives in Scotland
Bridgerton creator Shonda Rhimes has shared an exciting update about the Netflix series' future. Shonda Rhimes, the mastermind behind Netflix 's smash-hit period drama Bridgerton, has delivered thrilling news to fans ahead of the fourth series. The acclaimed showrunner made a significant revelation about her beloved Regency-era production whilst appearing at the Edinburgh Film Festival today (August 20), which Reach Screen Time attended. The streaming sensation, which racked up more than 100 million viewers during its debut series alone, revolves around the Bridgerton family and their amorous adventures. During an on-stage chat with British broadcaster Mishal Husain, Rhimes disclosed details about Bridgerton's future. "How many seasons do you think it will run for?" Husain enquired, prompting Rhimes to confirm: "Exactly eight." Husain then pressed the celebrated Shondaland boss on whether she "would let her imagination run wild beyond that". This led her to disclose: "The Bridgerton series is eight children. Violet Bridgerton and all eight of her children married. So every season is a child." The thrills continued, however, as Rhimes also hinted there is "a possibility for spin-offs", given that Bridgerton novelist Julia Quinn has penned additional books that branch off from the main storyline, reports the Express. This follows Netflix's triumphant prequel series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which explores the earlier lives of Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury. Meanwhile, enthusiasts are keenly awaiting Bridgerton's comeback for series four, which will spotlight Luke Thompson as Benedict Bridgerton, who is at last prepared to discover genuine romance. Sophie Baek is set to portray romantic interest Yerin Ha, the enigmatic Lady in Silver at Lady Bridgerton's renowned masquerade ball. Netflix has previously unveiled a teaser featuring various glimpses of Ton society members enjoying the latest Lady Whistledown publication, whilst the caption declares: "Next season's most compelling match will be unmasked. Welcome to the marriage mart, Benedict." Audiences will also be delighted to witness best mates Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Eloise (Claudia Jessie) reconciled and "more bonded than ever". Discussing his expanded role in series four with Netflix's Tudum, Thompson confessed he's eager for the star-crossed lovers' tale to be brought to the screen. "The scripts that Jess [Brownell] and her team have crafted are dynamite. They're really, really, really exciting," he revealed. "The storyline is a bit of a twist on 'Cinderella.' You remember being told those stories as a child - the magic and the romance of them. It's really exciting to have that weaved into the world that we know of Bridgerton... It's such a great story, but it's also, I hope, really relatable." The initial three series of Bridgerton concentrated on siblings Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Colin (Luke Newton) respectively, with the third series also providing screen time to Francesca's (Hannah Dodd) blossoming romantic storyline. While Benedict's story is up next and Francesca's tale is yet to be concluded, viewers are still anticipating future series focusing on Eloise (portrayed by Claudia Jessie) and their younger siblings Hyacinth (played by Florence Hunt) and Gregory (acted by Will Tilston). Bridgerton season 4 is set to premiere in 2026. Seasons 1-3 can currently be streamed exclusively on Netflix.
