Eagle sleuths crack down on ganja smugglers' assets in state

Visakhapatnam: With ganja smugglers raking in massive profits, the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) has intensified its financial investigations to identify and seize properties linked to smugglers and their close relatives. The team has identified over a dozen individuals across Andhra Pradesh who have amassed illegal assets, and is now seeking support from officials in other states to expand the probe. The "Sheelavathi" variety of cannabis, cultivated in the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) region, has a huge market value and is trafficked to major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. As demand surged nationwide, smugglers from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha made substantial profits. EAGLE teams have undergone specialised training in financial investigation modalities under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Chapter 5A of the Act empowers law enforcement agencies to seize, freeze, and forfeit assets acquired through or used in drug trafficking, said EAGLE chief Ake Ravi Krishna. "Our teams are actively investigating 12 cases where smugglers have accumulated illegal wealth through cannabis trade," Ravi Krishna said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? In a recent operation, enforcement officials in Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district seized assets worth Rs 17 lakh belonging to Perumal Srinu, acquired through cannabis smuggling across ASR, Vizianagaram, Odisha, and Telangana. The properties were registered in the names of his wife and relatives to conceal their illicit origin. Similarly, officials in Vizianagaram district seized assets worth Rs 48 lakh from Pati Khila alias Guru (32), a native of Basuput in Odisha's Koraput district, for his involvement in multiple cannabis smuggling cases in Andhra Pradesh. Once the confiscation order is issued by the competent authority, the govt can auction the seized properties. Officials said they are freezing smugglers' assets during investigation and attaching them post-conviction. Coordination is underway with banks, revenue departments, prosecutors, and other agencies to ensure the confiscation of illegal assets and financial sources linked to accused smugglers. The identified hotspots are spread across various cities and towns in the state, including Vizag and Vijayawada.
