ITV comedy episode slapped with trigger warning 45 years after original release

An episode of the longrunning ITV comedy-drama Minder has been labelled with a content warning on the ITVX platform over the outdated stereotypes used. Minder ran from 1979 to 1994 and was a cultural staple of the Thatcher years, focusing on the London criminal underworld, with dodgy entrepreneur Arthur Daley and his 'minder' sidekick Terry taking centre stage. The show starred the late Dennis Waterman, George Cole and Glynn Edwards. Gary Webster replaced Waterman in the final two series of the show – which was also revived in 2009 with Shane Richie starring as Arthur Daley's nephew Archie. Certain episodes on the ITVX streamer, which has all 10 series of the show free to watch, now have a parental guidance warning attached. One example is the 1980 episode Whose Wife Is It Anyway?, which has been labelled as containing 'offensive language, outmoded sexual stereotypes and some violence'. The episode synopsis reads: 'Terry turns his hand to selling antiques when Arthur's friend Alex is hospitalised following a hit-and-run. Was it definitely an accident?' This series two episode, which aired in 1980, saw Arthur instruct his muscle Terry to protect a gay couple who run an antique shop. The episode contains a number of slurs referring to gay men. The show's first ever episode, Gunfight at the OK Launderette, also contains a warning for 'violence, moderate language and nudity'. George Cole's Daley has been hailed as a British TV icon, with catchphrases (''er indoors', 'the world is your lobster', 'nice little earner') that went on to become common parlance. Cole, who died aged 90 in 2015 after a short illness, also became an unlikely pop star as a result of the show, hitting the charts in 1983 with the novelty Christmas hit What Are We Gonna Get For 'Er Indoors – a reference to Daley's onscreen wife who never actually appeared in Minder. Waterman died aged 74 in 2022, after a career spanning 60 years. He had varied roles in comedy, drama, and horror, after finding fame as a teenager in BBC drama William. More Trending He became well known for his role as tough-nut cop Detective Sergeant George Carter opposite John Thaw in ITV's police drama The Sweeney. He went on to star as bodyguard Terry McCann in Minder and landed a long-running role as Gerry Standing in New Tricks from 2003 to 2015. The star was also known for singing the iconic theme tune for New Tricks and Minder. View More » Metro contacted ITV for comment. Got a story? ‘His work ethic is phenomenal': Linfield boss David Healy hails his new star man after Euro joy

Kieran Offord celebrates scoring his stunning goal for Linfield The 21-year-old, who joined the Blues from Scottish side St Mirren in January following a successful five-month loan spell with Crusaders, lit up Windsor Park on Thursday with a stunning goal against FK Zalgiris, helping his team book a slot in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League. Star man Joel Cooper may have left Linfield in the summer to take up a new challenge with big-spending Coleraine, but Offord has the potential to become the new darling of the Blues' faithful. It wasn't only his goal that had the fans drooling on Thursday, but his overall performance – on and off the ball – he tied the Lithuanian side in knots at times. Matthew Fitzpatrick got the Blues off to the best possible start by heading them in front after only six minutes before Offord unloaded a stunner from 25 yards, which arrowed into the bottom corner. Read more It could have been much more comfortable for Healy's boys because the usually reliable Chris Shields fluffed his lines from the penalty spot in the first half. 'Kieran produced a bit of individual brilliance when we needed it with our second goal,' stated former Northern Ireland international striker Healy. 'At the time, I thought he was going to try and slide Fitzy (Fitzpatrick) in, but he showed great belief in his own ability to score a brilliant goal. 'He is a pleasure to work with; Kieran is a wonderful young man with so much natural ability. Once he learns to develop the rest of his game; the other parts of his game that needs tidied up, he'll become a top player. 'His work ethic is phenomenal… we all witnessed that against Zalgiris. His desire and his hunger to improve is there. I firmly believe once everything clicks for him, we'll have a heck of a player on our hands.' Kieran Offord impressed for Linfield against Zalgiris Healy admits he's always been an admirer of the Scottish Under-19 international. He added: 'I watched Kieran playing for Crusaders when he just joined them. He was up against the Welsh team (Caernarfon Town), in a European game. 'He was a little bit raw… he probably had a few question marks, but I turned to Willie McKeown (Linfield head of recruitment), after about an hour and said to him, that boy is going to have a chance. 'He started the season well for the Crues and scored a lot of goals. I knew about his ability, but what impresses me is his desire to improve.' Healy insisted it was a shrewd business move by the club when Offord and Callumn Morrison arrived at Windsor Park in the January transfer window. Read more 'It's probably the first time we've done that,' he went on. 'There were probably a few raised eyebrows, inside and outside the football club, when we conducted our transfer business in January. 'At that time, we had built up a 15 or 16-point lead at the top of the League table. It looked to everyone else like it was just a matter of time before we won the title, although it wasn't as obvious to me. 'The important thing about getting Kieran and Callumn to the club at that time was to give them three or four months, basically as a pre-season. They played some games, they missed some games and, at times, they basically had a watching brief. 'It was important for them to get a feel for me; to get a feel for the rest of the players instead of coming in over the summer and having two-and-a-half or three weeks before the European games. 'I wanted the new lads to be acquainted with the group of players. Yes, we lost in the Champions League (to Shelbourne), but the boys (the squad) are getting fitter – I think that was evident against Zalgiris. Linfield manager David Healy applauds the Blues fans after victory at Windsor Park 'The win was fully deserved. There were moments in the game, if we had been a little bit tidier, it could have been a bit more convincing.' Linfield will now face Faroese side Vikingur Gota in the third qualifying round – the first leg will be in Iceland next Thursday. 'We feel we have an opportunity, although it's going to be a tough game,' added Healy. 'It's certainly not an impossible task… it's probably a 50-50 game. 'We have been to the Faroes before… it was HB Torshavn a few years back. It doesn't give us much time, but I don't mind that. 'We have a team that gets to work right away. We came off the back of the Shelbourne game, but within 24 hours we were doing our homework on Zalgiris. 'I enjoy that, so does the staff. From a coaching aspect, it's good development, good learning. People like Ross (Oliver), George (McCartney), and Lindsay Corry, we all get our heads together to set out what we want to do. It's always key in terms of how we set up. 'We are not going to get to see Vikingur before we play them next week, so we must rely on footage. I know they lost their first game in the Champions League, so we'll assess that, move forward and try and progress.'

Liverpool have power to soon 'complicate' Arsenal's Eberechi Eze transfer despite star's desire

Arsenal remain keen on recruiting Crystal Palace talisman Eberechi Eze before the summer transfer window shuts, but Liverpool's pursuit of Eagles centre-back Marc Guehi could scupper proceedings Arsenal have been warned that Marc Guehi's potential move to Liverpool could hinder their prospects of signing Crystal Palace ace Eberechi Eze – especially if Arne Slot's side get a deal done first. The Gunners are fully expected to submit a bid for Eze before the window slams shut. ‌ Mikel Arteta's side have already strengthened in key areas this summer, finally securing a striker in the form of Viktor Gyokeres and adding Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera and Christian Norgaard, as well as deputy goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. ‌ However, their well-documented interest in Eze remains. It is anticipated that, upon the expiration of the 27-year-old's release clause on Friday night, the Gunners' pursuit will be ramped up. But they have now been issued a warning regarding Palace captain Guehi and his prospective Liverpool switch. ‌ talkSPORT report that Eze's release clause expires on Friday evening. This clause would allow a club to enter negotiations with the player for a fee of £60m plus around £8m in add-ons. Arsenal have informed their London rivals that they will not be activating said clause, instead waiting until they can offload some players first, even though Eze is keen on a move to the Emirates. Yet, should Guehi depart Selhurst Park – potentially to Liverpool – before any deal for Eze is struck, then Arsenal could face a problem. In that case, the expectation is the Eagles may refuse to let another star player leave, and it is highlighted how a move for Eze could become extra complicated. Guehi is entering the last year of his deal in south London and informed the club this summer that he will not be penning a new deal, all but forcing their hand to offload him. Arne Slot's title-winning Reds, interested in bolstering their central defensive ranks, are a likely suitor. However, Palace's asking price of £40m is currently more than Liverpool are willing to pay, given that he would be available for free next summer. ‌ If these discrepancies are ironed out, though, and Liverpool purchase Guehi before Arsenal can pounce on Eze, the worry is that Palace will set up shop having lost one key asset and be desperate not to lose another. This may also disadvantage Liverpool if they drag out a deal for Guehi. The Reds' current focus seems to be on a possible British record transfer for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, although experts feel they have the financial muscle to get that and potentially more business done due to their healthy position with PSR, while more sales are expected at Anfield before September. ‌ Before Palace's momentous FA Cup win in May, Guehi was asked about his future in light of his contract winding down, and while he stayed coy, he made it clear he will be exploring his prospects. "I think the most important thing is just always doing the best that I can for this football club," admitted the Englishman, who was subject to a £65m bid from Newcastle last summer. "I come in every day and I try to be the same. I try to work hard. And you know, this football club has given me a lot. I'm still under contract at this football club. "My focus is always at this football club. So, you know, for me, the most important thing is just doing the best I can and seeing where the future holds."
