Telangana achieves 70% of MNREGS target in two months
HYDERABAD: Telangana is rapidly implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS), having generated 4.53 crore person-days of employment by the end of May this financial year.
This is against the 6.5 crore person-days allocated to the state by the Central government. With this, the state has already achieved 70 per cent of its target within two months, spending Rs 1,416 crore, including Rs 1,151.67 crore towards wages and Rs 191.03 crore on material purchases.
The government is providing Rs 307 as the daily wage for each worker, as notified by the Centre. According to officials, the state government is ensuring timely payment of wages, even though the release of funds by the Central government is delayed in some instances.
So far in 2025–26, the Telangana government has provided employment to 28.48 lakh individuals from 18.9 lakh households. On average, each household has received 24 days of work over these two months, with 1,127 households completing 100 days of work.
As part of the employment guarantee scheme in rural areas, the government is prioritising works related to agriculture and allied sectors, achieving 50 per cent of its 60 per cent target for these areas. Under this initiative, over one lakh farm ponds, cattle and goat sheds, and plantation works are being undertaken, along with the construction of 31,000 Anganwadi buildings and CC roads.
Meanwhile, as demand for MNREGS works increases, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya has written to the Centre, urging it to increase the person-days allocation to 12 crore. She has also sought an appointment with the Union Minister for Panchayat Raj and Urban Development to discuss the issue.

Modi Government left no stone unturned in ruining country's rapidly growing economy: Congress
The Congress on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) attacked the Centre over interest rates on savings accounts reportedly reaching the lowest level in 25 years, alleging that the Modi government has, in the last 11 years, left no stone unturned in 'ruining' the country's rapidly growing economy. Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh shared a media report on X which claimed that the 1% cut in repo rate by the RBI has forced banks to reduce their deposit rates, pushing savings account interest rates to a 25-year low. 'In the last 11 years, the Modi government has left no stone unturned in ruining the country's rapidly growing economy. Starting with demonetisation, new experiments are being conducted on the people of the country every year; they are being tortured in new ways everyday,' Mr. Ramesh said in a post on X in Hindi. The interest rates on savings accounts have reached the lowest level in 25 years, which is directly hitting the pockets of the elderly and the common citizens, he said. 'Banks have already closed their doors for the common people; after this, they will be available only to the very rich capitalist friends,' the Congress leader said. 'Prime Minister, the well-being of the people of the country is your first responsibility, but you are busy in increasing the wealth of your capitalist friends by diverting the money of the people of the country to their companies through the stock market,' Mr. Ramesh alleged. This is a huge injustice and deception towards the people of the country, he said. The Congress has been attacking the government over its handling of the economy, claiming the issues of rising prices, decreasing private investment and stagnating wages were hitting the common people hard.

To boost farmers' income, UP to modernise irrigation systems with central scheme
1 2 3 Lucknow: To reduce the dependence of farmers on traditional systems of irrigation and rainfall, the state govt will be implementing the 'modernisation of command area development and water management programme, a central govt initiative for which it has already sanctioned Rs 1,600 crore. Its key highlights include the formation of society clusters for joint irrigation system management, the use of modern irrigation tools, and the adoption of the 'one cluster, one crop' model. The programme will initially be launched as a pilot project in some areas, and IIT Kanpur will support it technically. "The programme will ensure consistent water supply to fields and significantly boost farmers' income. It will deliver water directly to every farm using a Pressurized Pipe Irrigation Network instead of outdated systems. This modern technology will ensure up to 90% water-use efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and increase crop yield," said irrigation and water resources secretary GS Naveen. The project is being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana, integrating two major components of the Ministry of Jal Shakti: the Command Area Development and Water Management and the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme. Toll soon on Karnataka stretch of Bengaluru-Chennai expressway
Bengaluru: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to begin toll collection on the 70-km Karnataka stretch of the newly opened Bengaluru-Chennai expressway, marking the end of free travel for motorists using the route daily. The expressway — the first in Karnataka — was unofficially opened in Feb, allowing vehicles to travel from Hoskote to Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). According to NHAI, toll rates are being finalised, with car users likely to pay Rs 150 for a one-way trip and Rs 225 for a return journey. There are three interchanges — Malur, Bangarpet, and Bethamangala — with tolls ranging from Rs 55 to Rs 150. Heavy vehicles may be charged up to Rs 520 one-way and Rs 780 for a round trip. "The ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) has notified tolling for this stretch. Once the commercial operations wing completes the procedural formalities and the district authorities are informed, toll collection will begin," NHAI regional officer Vilas Brahmankar said. NHAI has provided Rs 20 crore to Karnataka to upgrade 18km of connecting village and district roads to boost access to the expressway from Bengaluru-Kolar highway. Once completed, traffic is expected to increase significantly. Motorists accessing the expressway via Hoskote continue to face congestion on Old Madras Road. However, connectivity is set to improve with the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) at Hoskote and a new STRR-Hosur link expected to be operational by Aug. Officials confirmed that two-wheelers, autorickshaws, and tractors are banned on the expressway. Despite this, bikers have been illegally accessing the route, raising safety concerns. There have already been several fatal accidents due to speeding. "The road is designed for a speed of 120 kmph for cars. We've implemented road safety measures and jurisdictional police have stepped up enforcement," said an NHAI official. Tolling will formally begin once public notice is issued, bringing structured regulation to one of Karnataka's key expressway projects.
