Why Shubman Gill Replaced Axar Patel As T20I Vice-Captain For Asia Cup? Ajit Agarkar Explains
India T20I captain Suryakumar, while speaking at a press conference, revealed the reason why Gill was appointed his deputy, instead of Axar. He pointed out that Gill was the vice-captain the last time he played in the format.
"The last time he played T20Is for India was when we went to Sri Lanka after the T20 World Cup, not Zimbabwe. I was leading, he was vice-captain, and that's where we started the new cycle for T20 World Cup. After that, he got busy with all the Test series. So, he didn't get the opportunity to play anywhere in T20Is as he got busy playing Test cricket, as well as the Champions Trophy. So, he is there in the squad and they are happy to have him," Suryakumar said during the press conference.
Suryakumar's clarification hints at India's possible plans to unveil him as an all-format player after his leadership elevation on the England tour.
The eight-team Asia Cup T20I tournament will be staged in Abu Dhabi and Dubai from September 9 to 28. Defending champions India are placed in Group 'A' alongside Pakistan, Oman and the UAE.
The Suryakumar-led side will start their campaign against the UAE on September 10 before the blockbuster clash against archrivals Pakistan on September 14.
India are scheduled to play 15 T20I games after the continental tournament in the build-up to next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February.

Jasprit Bumrah - Pacer (18 wickets, economy 6.67): No justification needed, Bumrah walks into any team in the world, in any format. Prasidh Krishna - Pacer (25 wickets, Eco 8.27): A better option than Harshit Rana, based on IPL 2025 show, for the Asia Cup squad. Prasidh was also the Purple Cap winner in the T20 league this season. Arshdeep Singh - Pacer (21 wickets, SR 8.88): Second-highest wicket-taker among Indians in IPL 2025, Arshdeep Singh is a no-brainer for India for the Asia Cup in UAE. Team India's Asia Cup 2025 squad has given former cricketers and pundits plenty to talk about. Shubman Gill 's return to the T20I set in the capacity of Suryakumar Yadav 's deputy saw some of the other players being forced out of the team. There was no place for the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer in the team. However, former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin feels Gill's return is set to see Sanju Samson being dropped to the bench too. In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin expressed sympathy with Jaiswal and Iyer after the duo found no place in India's 15-member squad. Though Ashwin admitted that team selection is a thankless job, he hopes the snubbed players were explained the reasons behind the decisions taken by the BCCI selection committee. "See, I understand that selection is a thankless job. Leaving somebody out, telling someone they are dropped, it is not an easy thing. You have to speak to the players, you have to go through the sadness. I just hope Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal were given a call, and they were told the reasons behind not being picked," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. "Genuinely, I understand Shubman Gill's selection. He is also the vice-captain. He has scored a lot of runs for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He has credentials to be picked in the T20I setup," he added. Ashwin admitted that Shubman too deserved a place in the team but the selectors 'were not fair' to Jaiswal and Iyer. "When you have Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener in the T20 World Cup 2024, to remove someone from the World Cup squad and bring in Shubman Gill. I mean, it's okay, I am happy for Shubman, but I'm very sad for both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer. It is just not fair to these two kids," said Ashwin. Agarkar also hinted that Gill is being groomed as the man to lead India in all three formats, hence his elevation as the T20I vice-captain. But, Ashwin doesn't think such a step was necessary either. "Jaiswal has also been in some fine form. Maybe they are thinking of Shubman Gill as the leader for the future. Maybe he can be the all-format captain. But it is not necessary to have the same captain in all formats," said Ashwin. Gill's promotion as Suryakumar's deputy makes him a certain pick in the Indian XI. Hence, the batter will most likely open alongside Abhishek Sharma for India, possibly forcing the management to leave Sanju Samson on the bench.

Agarkar added that while the core of the team will remain same, the door will remain open for others, depending on how the players perform in the remaining T20Is before the T20 World Cup "With 20 games left, you have a fair idea on who your guys are likely to be. After every World Cup, you try and plan for the next down the squad as close you get. With what 22 games you play, you have a fair idea. Injuries and form can dictate a little bit. There might be changes, there are no guarantees. But in general, because there is a World Cup around the corner, you will always know who are your best 18 or 20 guys to pick from. An I think you have got some serious options," Ajit Agarkar said on the core for the T20 World Cup.
