Tom Hanks pays tribute to Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell
Late Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell has received a tribute from Tom Hanks, the actor who brought him to life in an Oscar-winning movie and said he had gone places most wouldn't dare. 'There are people who dare, who dream, and who lead others to places we would not go on our own,' Hanks said of Lovell in a heartfelt Instagram tribute post published after the astronaut's death was announced Friday. 'Jim Lovell, who for a long while had gone farther into space and for longer than any other person of our planet, was that kind of guy.' Hanks portrayed Lovell in the 1995 film Apollo 13. Directed by Ron Howard and earning Academy Awards for Best Film Editing and Best Sound, the film depicted the failed lunar mission that nearly cost Lovell and his crew their lives in 1970. Apollo 13 was intended to be Nasa's third crewed moon landing. But during the US space agency's mission, manned by Lovell and fellow astronauts John Swigert and Fred Haise, an oxygen tank in the service module exploded roughly 200,000 miles (322,000 kilometers) from Earth. Lovell famously informed mission control, 'Houston, we've had a problem.' Hanks later immortalized the line in the film, which slightly altered the phrase to, 'Houston, we have a problem.' With their power and life-support systems crippled, the crew was forced to abandon their lunar landing and use several engine burns to slingshot around the far side of the moon, setting a course back to Earth. About three days after the explosion, they splashed down safely in the South Pacific, concluding what became known as the Apollo program's 'successful failure'. 'His many voyages around Earth and on to so-very-close to the moon were not made for riches or celebrity, but because such challenges as those are what fuels the course of being alive,' Hanks wrote on Friday of Lovell. 'And who better than Jim Lovell to make those voyages.' 'On this night of a full Moon, he passes on – to the heavens, to the cosmos, to the stars. God speed you, on this next voyage, Jim Lovell,' reads the end of the tribute. Lovell died on Thursday at age 97 in Lake Forest, Illinois, Nasa said. The cause of death was not immediately released. He made a brief cameo in Apollo 13 as the captain of the USS Iwo Jima, the Navy ship that recovered the crew after splashdown. The film was nominated for a total of nine Oscars, including best picture. Hanks starred in Apollo 13 alongside actors Gary Sinise, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris, Kathleen Quinlan and the late Bill Paxton.

Maisie Smith reveals the moment she and boyfriend Max George were forced to go 'off grid' after a 'nightmare' fire ruined their holiday plans
Maisie Smith has recalled how her plans for a romantic holiday with her boyfriend Max George were thrown into chaos after a fire 'destroyed' their villa. The EastEnders star, 24, had plans for a lavish trip to a villa in the south of France with The Wanted star, 36. But in an appearance on Sunday Brunch, Maisie admitted she and Max went 'off grid' when they were forced to change their accomodation at the last minute, having learned the villa they'd booked had been 'destroyed' before they arrived. The actress didn't seem particularly enthused by the new place they'd stayed, as she was grilled about her trip by host Tim Lovejoy. Early in the show, Tim and co-host Simon Rimmer grilled Maisie on why they'd struggled to contact her prior to her appearance on the show. She then admitted there was another reason she hadn't been answering her phone, saying: 'It was the South of France, it wasn't really off-grid, it's quite a common holiday destination.' 'But there was a fire and everything was destroyed. The house we were supposed to be staying in, it was destroyed.' A surprised Tim then asked: 'So where did you stay,' and Maisie replied: 'In an airbnb, down the round from where we were supposed to be staying.' 'So all of your technical equipment was destroyed?' quizzed Tim as Maisie told him: 'No, we were on a lake.' As Tim asked whether Maisie 'fished,' she replied: 'No but my boyfriend did?' Tim seemed to notice that Maisie wasn't enthralled by her recent French break, as she awkwardly said: 'If you like to fish it was great... but if you didn't...' The conversation was then cut short as the rest of the guests began giggling, before Tim moved the chat on to another guest. The couple have been inseparable since making their romance Instagram official in August 2022. Since leaving EastEnders in 2022, Maisie has starred in a string of stage roles, including Strictly Ballroom, and earlier this year she and Max starred together in the arena tour of Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds: The Spirit of Man, In December, Max was fitted with a pacemaker after his mum Babs realised he had 'turned blue' and pushed for him to go to A&E. He feared he would die, so at the time wrote out a will in his phone. Max, who has been sober for over four years after previous liver issues, reflected on his journey after the op. The Wanted singer explained that alcohol wasn't a factor in his condition, saying he gave up drinking after doctors flagged concerns about his liver following years of heavy partying on tour. The Glad You Came hitmaker noted it is all a 'mystery' what has happened to him, although doctors have been able to eliminate some possible causes.

Blind Date: ‘Billy is quite different from my friends – which is refreshing'
What were you hoping for? To meet someone different who I may never have met through friends or apps. First impressions? Phoebe was immediately very welcoming and easy to talk to. What did you talk about? Travelling, studying, living at home in adulthood, and surviving our previous jobs in the public sector. We also found out we grew up close to each other, and she has been working for the university where I did my PhD – small world. Most awkward moment? Probably asking for the bill. We didn't want to look like dine and dashers. Good table manners? Faultless. She was much more on top of keeping our waters filled, which felt a bit ungentlemanly on my part. Best thing about Phoebe? She is so down-to-earth and easy to chat with. Would you introduce Phoebe to your friends? I'd be happy to. But I think I'd be doing so as a friend (spoiler alert). Describe Phoebe in three words Warm, cultured, adventurous. Blind date is Saturday's dating column: every week, two strangers are paired up for dinner and drinks, and then spill the beans to us, answering a set of questions. This runs, with a photograph we take of each dater before the date, in Saturday magazine (in the UK) and online at every Saturday. It's been running since 2009 – you can read all about how we put it together questions will I be asked? We ask about age, location, occupation, hobbies, interests and the type of person you are looking to meet. If you do not think these questions cover everything you would like to know, tell us what's on your mind. Can I choose who I match with? No, it's a blind date! But we do ask you a bit about your interests, preferences, etc – the more you tell us, the better the match is likely to be. Can I pick the photograph? No, but don't worry: we'll choose the nicest ones. What personal details will appear?Your first name, job and age. How should I answer?Honestly but respectfully. Be mindful of how it will read to your date, and that Blind date reaches a large audience, in print and online. Will I see the other person's answers? No. We may edit yours and theirs for a range of reasons, including length, and we may ask you for more details. Will you find me The One?We'll try! Marriage! Babies! Can I do it in my home town?Only if it's in the UK. Many of our applicants live in London, but we would love to hear from people living elsewhere. How to applyEmail What do you think Phoebe made of you? I think we got on well, so I hope she found me good company. Did you go on somewhere? Just a quick wander back to the station. And … did you kiss? We didn't, just a hug by the barriers. I don't think either of us were feeling that sort of vibe from the evening. If you could change one thing about the evening, what would it be? I would've ordered some of the non-alcoholic wine Phoebe was drinking; it looked intriguing. Marks out of 10? 7.5. I had a great time, but I don't think there was any romantic spark. Would you meet again? I don't think another date is on the cards, but I'd be up for a catchup at some point. What were you hoping for? A south London accent. First impressions? South London, no accent. What did you talk about? Feeling 16 again, karaoke, hope for a new left wing, favourite books. I also learned that budgies can argue like siblings – Billy has two: Egg and Yolky. Most awkward moment? My lateness … very unlike me. Good table manners? I was glad he was up for trying the golden beetroot. Best thing about Billy? His contentment – something I often lack. Would you introduce Billy to your friends? Billy is quite different from my friends, which was refreshing, but I'm not sure they have much in common. Describe Billy in three words Sweet, optimistic, and genuine. What do you think Billy made of you? Maybe a bit chaotic, and more spontaneous than I really am. (I'm not sure anyone is ever their true self on a first date.) Did you go on somewhere? No. And … did you kiss? We did not. If you could change one thing about the evening, what would it be? I wish we had sat outside. Marks out of 10? Overall, 7.5. I hadn't expected to have such a nice evening with a total stranger. Would you meet again? No, I think we are looking for different things – and maybe different people. Phoebe and Billy ate at Brunswick House, London SW8. Fancy a blind date? Email
