Saleng: Kaizer Chiefs win transfer after Orlando Pirates blunder?
Monnapule Saleng is set for a dramatic career revival after a turbulent season with Orlando Pirates, a saga sparked by a costly contract oversight that may have handed Kaizer Chiefs a massive transfer coup.
As the 2024/2025 season wrapped up, Saleng finally looked ahead with a sense of reprieve, ready to reboot his career after spending months frozen out of the Buccaneers' plans. His fourth campaign since joining Pirates turned sour due to confusion over his contract's validity.
At the heart of the issue lies uncertainty. Did his deal expire at the end of June, or was there an option for renewal? That question, left unanswered by Pirates' management, opened the door to one of the biggest off-field dramas in recent PSL memory.
Reports now claim that Saleng signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs, sparking even more intrigue.
Insiders say the winger's handlers quietly stepped back from the situation, leaving supporters wondering what went wrong behind the scenes.
'You get the idea that something happened when those representing him stepped away,' a source told The South African .
'Saleng's contract option with Orlando Pirates lapsed unnoticed, only realised afterwards.'
With no formal extension signed, Pirates discovered the oversight too late, after Saleng had already reportedly committed to their Soweto rivals.
Saleng's fall from grace feels even more striking when you consider his past contributions. In the 2022/2023 season, Jose Riveiro's first as head coach, Saleng exploded with 26 goal contributions, scoring the MTN8 final winner and assisting in the Nedbank Cup final.
The following season, he added 10 more goal involvements and attracted interest from UAE side Al Nasr.
He started the 2024/2025 campaign strongly, notching five goals and one assist in just 13 appearances. But everything changed after 7 December 2024, when he played his final competitive match against Al Ahly.
Since that night, Saleng hasn't featured again, missing 33 consecutive matches in all competitions.
Sources reveal that once Pirates learned of his pre-contract with Chiefs, they froze him out of the squad. The club also pulled him from the CHAN squad, reportedly due to mounting pressure from fans who began questioning his absence.
His only outing since was in the CHAN qualifiers against Egypt on 2 March, a 1–1 home draw that now stands as his last competitive appearance of the season.
While neither club has officially confirmed the move, signs point strongly to Kaizer Chiefs pulling off a quiet coup, capitalising on Pirates' contract mismanagement.
Will Kaizer Chiefs supporters welcome Saleng to Naturena?

Kaizer Chiefs: Zlatan's club loses SA wonderkid to Naturena
Kaizer Chiefs have pulled off a quiet but significant coup by bringing back gifted teenage midfielder Steven Mendes from Hammarby Fotboll in Sweden. The 17-year-old, who left Naturena last year to join the academy of the Allsvenskan side, has returned to South Africa and is set to rejoin Chiefs' DStv Diski Challenge squad. According to iDiski Times , Mendes made an early impact in Sweden, adjusting well to life in Stockholm and impressing with his sharp technical skills. But now, the youngster is back where it all began, ready to continue his development in a Nedbank Cup-winning Chiefs environment. Hammarby IF, steeped in tradition and based in the heart of Stockholm, are one-time Swedish champions and five-time Svenska Cupen finalists. With Zlatan Ibrahimović holding a 23.5% ownership stake, the club has enjoyed global attention and rising expectations. Despite the prestige and opportunity, Mendes has opted for a return to South African football. His time in Europe has sharpened his talent, but home soil now offers the platform to shine brighter. Known for his technical ability and powerful shooting, Mendes has built a reputation for scoring 'anything but ordinary' goals. 'Those who have watched Mendes in action describe his goals as anything but ordinary,' notes a source, underlining the excitement surrounding his return. Back at Chiefs, the midfielder is expected to be a key figure in the Diski Challenge squad, who recently lifted the title for the first time since the reserve league's inception. With the South African national team preparing for U17 and U20 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Mendes will aim to catch the selectors' eyes once more. His European experience gives him an edge, and Chiefs will hope to mould him into a future first-team star. Is this a good move for Kaizer Chiefs and Mendes? Kaizer Chiefs to sign Sundowns striker?
We forgive you for forgetting Etiosa Ighodaro plays for Mamelodi Sundowns. Are Kaizer Chiefs his next club? After three loan spells, the Nigerian is reportedly on his way out of Sundowns' books. Igodaro spent last season on loan at AmaZulu, where he scored six goals in 27 games. The season before, he was at Chippa United after his loan spell at the University of Pretoria. According to this latest report, Kaizer Chiefs are keen on the 23-year-old, whose deal with Sundowns ends on the 30th. Last season's report said Amakhosi are keen to sign the Nigerian centre forward before Sundowns opted to send him to AmaZulu instead. With the likes of Arthur Sales and Lebogang Mothiba arriving at Sundowns last season, indications say the champions are ready to part ways with Igodaro. 'Yes, it's true. Kaizer Chiefs are believed to have enquired about Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro. You know the thing is the same people who scouted him from Nigeria for Sundowns are the same who have enquired about him for Kaizer Chiefs,' a source told Soccer Laduma. Actually it's not the first time they have enquired about him. They tried before when he was on loan at Chippa United but Sundowns sent him on loan at SuperSport United. But now they are apparently looking at the possibility of Sundowns letting him go and they can pounce on him,' the source added. 'At the moment the club and the recruitment department have identified some strikers from where they believe they can get at least two or one that they really need,' the source continued. 'A striker and left back are the priority signings when compared to midfielders and wingers. Kaizer Chiefs are busy in the background working on getting a striker, and Ighodaro has apparently emerged as another target. That's the focus, it is to get a striker as early as they can before the pre-season training camp,' the insider told the outlet.
