Pope Francis held India, PM close to his heart
Pope Francis, the first Latin American and Jesuit pope, infused the papacy with a sense of purpose, emerging as a transformative leader in the Catholic Church. He led by example, embodying the principles he championed throughout his papacy. On April 17, 2025, continuing his cherished Holy Thursday tradition, Pope Francis visited Rome's Regina Coeli prison. In his final outing, despite his frail health, he spent time with the inmates, offering prayers. He gifted each inmate rosaries and copies of the Gospels, reaffirming his commitment to uplifting those on society's margins.
Just hours before his death, he met with US Vice-President JD Vance and delivered an Easter message focused on a theme central to his mission: a heartfelt appeal for the better treatment of migrants and other vulnerable, marginalised communities. His papacy was distinguished by a resolute commitment to fostering interfaith understanding, and addressing pressing global challenges such as climate change.
Personally, I had the privilege of being chosen by PM Modi to lead a seven-member delegation to the Vatican for the creation ceremony of then Cardinal-designate George Jacob Koovakad, the first Indian Catholic priest to be directly elevated to receive the red biretta, on December 7, 2024.
With his ever-smiling demeanor, Pope Francis graciously hosted us. Upon arriving at the hotel, I was unexpectedly summoned by a cardinal to meet the Pope again. The Holy Father handed me a rosary, saying,
'This is for the people of India.' I later learned that such gestures are exceedingly rare. I can confidently affirm that PM Modi and India occupy a cherished place in his thoughts and prayers. This was evident when the Pope told the PM, 'India is the greatest gift you've given me.'
Although physically he is no longer among us, Pope Francis will continue to inspire millions to dedicate their lives to serving the poor.

Eyeing political revival, Catholic Church steps up farmer protest ahead of local body elections
In line with its plans for a political resurgence ahead of the upcoming local body elections, the Catholic Church is stepping up its campaign against what it sees as the Left Democratic Front government's apathy towards farmers in central Travancore. All organisations and institutions under the Archdiocese of Changanassery of the Syro-Malabar Church will take part in a massive demonstration to be organised by the All Kerala Catholic Congress (AKCC), the official lay organisation of the Church, at Mankombu in Kuttanad. The event, scheduled for August 17, when the State celebrates Farmers' Day, is being staged as a follow-up to the 'Nasrani Sangamam' (Christian Meet) held in February this year. Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil, head of the Changanassery archdiocese, will lead the day-long demonstration. 'Though tens of thousands participated in the Nasrani Sangamam, no meaningful action has been taken by the government so far. It is in this context that a protest is being organised in Kuttanad, which will also involve submitting petitions and a mass memorandum to both the Union and State governments,' said AKCC president Biju Sebastian. The protest will see participation from all priests, members of the Pastoral Council, the Vigilance Committee, office-bearers from archdiocesan and forane churches, and unit-level organisations, as well as farmers, agricultural labourers, and leaders from other communities. Church sources said the demonstration , which demands urgent measures to restore farming and livelihoods in Kuttanad, will coincide with similar protests by the Kothamangalam and Idukki dioceses over continuing farm distress and escalating wildlife attacks. These coordinated actions are seen as part of a broader bid to reclaim the community's diminished public visibility over the past two decades. 'This is indeed an attempt to show that Christians have the strength to rise again,' remarked a senior Church functionary. The latest move assumes significance especially as the Church is finalising a community empowerment action plan aimed at fielding the maximum number of community members in the forthcoming local body elections. The move takes a cue from a recent call by the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC), which urged young Christians to step forward and play an active role in politics.

MP CM to disburse Rs 500 crore under Kisan Kalyan Yojana on Balram Jayanti
In a boost to agrarian welfare, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will transfer the second instalment of the Mukhyamantri Kisan Kalyan Yojana (MKKY) for the financial year 2025–26 directly into the accounts of 83 lakh farmer beneficiaries across Madhya Pradesh, a government statement said. The disbursement, scheduled to coincide with Balram Jayanti celebrations in Mandla, underscores the state government's continued commitment to strengthening rural livelihoods and agricultural resilience, it said. Launched in September 2020, the MKKY provides annual financial assistance of Rs 6,000 to eligible farmers, supplementing the central government's PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. Together, these schemes ensure a combined annual support of Rs 12,000 per farmer, aimed at easing input costs and enhancing farm productivity. According to official data, the Madhya Pradesh government has disbursed over Rs 17,500 crore under the MKKY till March 2025, benefiting more than 83 lakh farmers. The upcoming instalment, estimated at Rs 500 crore, will be credited through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring transparency and timely delivery. The Mandla event will also feature thematic activities highlighting agriculture's pivotal role in the state's economy. These include exhibitions on agri-tech innovations, farmer success stories, and interactive sessions on sustainable farming practices. Experts from allied sectors such as horticulture, animal husbandry, and agri-marketing are expected to participate, fostering cross-sectoral dialogue and knowledge exchange. Speaking ahead of the event, officials emphasised that the timing of the transfer on Balram Jayanti, a day traditionally associated with agricultural prosperity, reflects the government's symbolic and strategic alignment with farmer-centric values. The scheme has been lauded for its inclusive design, covering small and marginal farmers, and for its integration with broader rural development goals. With agriculture employing over 60 per cent of the state's workforce, initiatives like MKKY are seen as vital instruments for economic stability and social equity. As Madhya Pradesh gears up for the ceremonial transfer, the spotlight remains firmly on empowering farmers - not just through financial aid, but through sustained engagement and institutional support.

Mexico City [Mexico], August 13 (ANI): In a renewed push to curb transnational organised crime amid mounting US pressure, Mexico has expelled 26 alleged high-ranking cartel members to the United States, according to an Al Jazeera report.A joint communique from Mexico's attorney general's office and its security ministry confirmed that the extradition was initiated at the request of the US Justice Department, which also provided guarantees that the death penalty would not be imposed on any of the coordinated transfer comes as the Trump administration steadily ratchets up pressure on Mexico to take stronger action against criminal syndicates tied to drug trafficking and human smuggling, Al Jazeera reported.A key facet of that pressure campaign has been economic: the imposition of higher tariffs on certain Mexican exports to the United States. Trump has justified these measures as necessary to 'hold Mexico 'accountable' for the 'extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs'," echoing his administration's broader President Claudia Sheinbaum has sought a delicate equilibrium in her dealings with Washington–working cooperatively on security challenges, while firmly safeguarding her nation's sovereignty.
