KUCHING (June 9): Sarawak has reaffirmed its dedication to global partnerships and clean energy leadership at the Energy Exports Conference (EEC) 2025 in Aberdeen, Scotland, positioning itself as a key driver of a sustainable and resilient energy future for the region.
According to a statement from Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, during the conference, the state presented its green and blue economy agenda under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which emphasises a balance between economic growth, social inclusion and environmental stewardship.
Deputy State Secretary (Economic and Planning) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel highlighted Sarawak's transparent and investor-friendly environment, reiterating the state's zero-tolerance stance on corruption.
He invited international partners to collaborate on scaling clean energy solutions and advancing inclusive development.
Sarawak Energy Berhad's senior vice president of Corporate Services Siti Aisah Adenan shared the company's long-term sustainability roadmap, which includes plans for cross-border grid integration to enable renewable energy exports and strengthen regional energy reliability.
SEDC Energy chief executive officer Robert Hardin outlined ongoing collaborations with Japanese and South Korean partners to develop hydrogen and ammonia export capabilities.
He said the Sarawak H2 Hub in Bintulu, developed with Gentari Sdn Bhd, will supply green hydrogen for industrial use and support Sarawak's ambition to become a commercial hydrogen producer by 2027.
Earlier in the conference, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni delivered a keynote during the Sarawak session on Opportunities in Borneo, highlighting the state's energy transition as being driven by strong policy frameworks, continued investment in innovation and close regional cooperation.

13MP helps Sarawak develop as clean energy powerhouse, targets 10GW by 2030

KUCHING: The 13th Malaysia Plan's (13MP) focus on positioning Sarawak as a regional sustainable energy hub complements the state's sustainable energy development, says Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni. The state Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister said Sarawak aims to be a leading regional energy hub by developing four key hubs in renewable energy, natural gas, hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). "As part of its Renewable Energy Hub agenda, Sarawak has set a clear target of achieving 10GW of installed power capacity by 2030 and 15GW by 2035, with at least 60% derived from renewable sources," he said. Dr Hazland also said the development of the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub was guided by the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER), launched in May, which outlined the state's strategy to produce green and blue hydrogen in the short to medium term. Since green hydrogen depended on renewable energy, he said, the targets in SHER were aligned with the availability of renewable resources. "This approach ensures that Sarawak can meet its hydrogen production goals without compromising energy security or economic growth across sectors. "On the other hand, blue hydrogen production leverages Sarawak's abundant natural gas reserves, which are the largest in Malaysia," he said. Dr Hazland said the green and blue hydrogen would lay the foundation for downstream applications in hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, cement and heavy transport. "They also open opportunities for the production of value-added products, including clean ammonia, methanol and sustainable aviation fuel," he added. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had named Sarawak and Sabah as regional hubs for sustainable energy when tabling the 13MP in Parliament on Thursday (July 31). He said initiatives such as the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub and Sabah Energy Supply Guarantee would strengthen the energy infrastructure in both states. "These efforts will attract high-impact investments, create high-value jobs and promote clean technology development, benefiting the people of Sabah and Sarawak," he said.

BINTULU (Aug 1): Pasar Tani Jepak is set to open its doors tomorrow (Aug 2), providing a vibrant platform for local entrepreneurs and small traders to showcase their products and grow their businesses. Conveniently located near GiatMARA Jepak, the market will operate every Saturday and Sunday from 6am to 1pm. With over 20 stalls, visitors can look forward to various fresh farm produce, traditional delicacies, beverages, and locally made products. Jepak assemblyman Iskandar Turkee highlighted that the launch of Pasar Tani Jepak aims to boost the local economy by empowering small-scale entrepreneurs and enhancing community involvement in the agri-food sector. 'This market serves as an important platform to uplift the income of our people and to increase community engagement in the agri-food industry,' he said during the canopy handover ceremony for stall operators at the DUN Jepak Service Centre yesterday. 'It aligns with the aspirations of the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.' In a move to make the market more inclusive and dynamic, it will also feature car boot sales and flea market-style stalls, encouraging participation from different community groups. To mark the grand opening, a variety of events will be held over the weekend, including 'Fama's Jualan Agro Madani', car boot sales, and community-driven activities. Iskandar also extended his appreciation to the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), Fama, and other agencies for their continuous support. 'I hope this initiative not only empowers small entrepreneurs but also acts as a catalyst for overall economic growth in Jepak. It's a step toward creating sustainable economic opportunities for the community,' he added. Bintulu Iskandar Turkee lead Pasar Tani Jepak

Kenya plans talks with Tanzania over new trade restrictions

NAIROBI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Kenya announced on Wednesday that it will hold meetings with Tanzania in early August to address concerns over recently introduced "discriminatory" tax measures and trade restrictions, including a ban on non-citizens operating small-scale businesses in Tanzania. Lee Kinyanjui, cabinet secretary in Kenya's Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry, said the measures introduced by Tanzania on Monday threaten the gains made in regional integration under the East African Community (EAC) framework. He raised concern over Tanzania's Finance Act 2025 and recent amendments to the Excise (Management and Tariff) Act 2019, which introduced new excise duties and an industrial development levy at rates of 10 percent and 15 percent, respectively. He also cited the Business Licensing (Prohibition of Business Activities for Non-Citizens) Order, 2025, which bars non-Tanzanians from engaging in 15 specific sectors, including micro and small enterprises. The order, which includes stiff penalties for violations, took immediate effect, except for current license holders. "These measures are substantive and undermine the core objectives of regional economic integration under the Common Market Protocol," Kinyanjui said, referring to the EAC's commitment to creating a single market that ensures the free movement of goods, services, capital, labor, and the rights of residence and establishment. "Kenya requests that these restrictions be removed and that Tanzania reverts to measures provided for in the EAC protocol," Kinyanjui said. Kinyanjui warned that the licensing order appears to criminalize otherwise lawful EAC investments and risks damaging both economies. "It is therefore critical, in the spirit of EAC, that bilateral engagements be held to resolve these issues," he said, adding that further bilateral discussions have been scheduled to address the recent measures and other ongoing trade concerns. According to the official, the EAC remains Kenya's largest export market, accounting for 28.1 percent of its total exports, valued at approximately 2.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. Tanzania is Kenya's second-largest EAC trading partner after Uganda, with bilateral trade valued at 487 million dollars this year.
