Dodgers snap Padres' win streak, tie for first in NL West

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Things sure have changed since the last time the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers clashed, back in June. The Dodgers were running away in the NL West then with a nine-game lead. The Padres were in third place. Now, with 1 1/2 months left in the season, it's all tied up. San Diego came into Dodger Stadium on Friday night with a one-game lead over the defending World Series champions. It's the latest the Padres had led the division since September 2010 and the first time the Dodgers had been out of first this late in the season since Aug. 18, 2021. By the time it was over, the Dodgers won 3-2 to snap a four-game skid and gain a tie for first. The Padres' five-game winning streak ended. 'The only day in the standings that ultimately matters is the last day of the season,' Padres manager Mike Shildt said before the game, 'but we've played good baseball and we feel good where we're at.' The last time the Padres won the NL West was in 2006, when their leadoff hitter was current Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. The Dodgers had been in first every day since April 27, but injuries, pitching woes and lack of offensive punch have derailed them. Ever the optimist, Roberts is keeping the faith in his lineup. 'They just got to go out there and take good at-bats,' he said. 'They're motivated. I don't like to be embarrassed, I don't think our players do, so this series I'm expecting kind of high intensity and high performance.' The teams meet five more times over the next nine days. 'The reality is we got here by putting emphasis on every day being the most important day of the season and that's not going to change from my seat,' Shildt said. Friday's series opener was devoid of the fireworks that occurred in June, when the Dodgers took five of seven games during the teams' first two series. Ten batters were hit, including Padres slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. three times. The last time cleared the benches. Roberts and Shildt were ejected following a tense back-and-forth exchange. This time, Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia hit Jose Iglesias and Jake Cronenworth back-to-back to open the eighth, but there was no retribution by the Padres. Roberts said Friday that he and Shildt had not spoken since the contretemps. 'I'm past it,' Roberts said before the game. 'I just want us to play well.' Shildt said, 'I'm not a grudge guy. I'm not a carry things over. I'm more of a day-to-day guy. Go and treat people with respect.' Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Shildt and Roberts shook hands at home plate as they exchanged lineup cards. Asked beforehand what they would say, Shildt responded, 'Hey Dave, how ya doin'?' Roberts said, 'I'll just do what I do all the time, say hello and that's about it.' ___ AP MLB:

Betts' sacrifice fly and Hernández's homer lift Dodgers over Padres for tie in NL West

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mookie Betts had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the third inning, Teoscar Hernández homered and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat San Diego 3-2 on Friday night to tie the Padres atop the NL West. After three straight hits to open the third, the Dodgers tied it at 1 when Shohei Ohtani grounded into a fielder's choice to second that scored Michael Conforto. Betts' sacrifice fly scored Alex Freeland before Ohtani was caught stealing to end the inning. Hernández homered 400 feet to center off Jeremiah Estrada in the seventh for a 3-1 lead. The Dodgers ended a four-game skid and the Padres' five-game winning streak. Ramón Laureano homered off Clayton Kershaw (7-2) to give the Padres a 1-0 lead in the first. He sent a hanging curveball 400 feet into left where it hit the foul pole. Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia hit Jose Iglesias and Jake Cronenworth back-to-back and walked Fernando Tatis Jr. to load the bases in the eighth. Luis Arraez's sacrifice fly cut it to 3-2. Jack Dreyer got the final out for his second save. Randy Vasquez (3-6) took the loss. Key moment Padres catcher Freddy Fermin crashed into the padded railing in front of the camera well next to San Diego's dugout trying to make a foul catch on Andy Pages. Fermin hit the railing with his chest and the ball was jarred loose. He stayed in the game. Key stat Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Kershaw retired the Padres in order in four innings. Up next Padres RHP Dylan Cease (5-10, 4.52 ERA) was set to start Saturday against LHP Blake Snell (2-1, 2.37). ___ AP MLB:

Alejandro Kirk's heroics lead Blue Jays to 6-5 comeback win over Texas Rangers

Alejandro Kirk followed a two-run homer in the seventh inning with a game-winning two-run single in the eighth to push the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-5 comeback win in the series opener against the Texas Rangers on Friday. Kirk's single with the bases loaded allowed the Blue Jays (72-51) to overcome a three-run deficit. Before Kirk's deciding at-bat, Texas reliever Phil Matton (2-5) walked Daulton Varsho with the bases loaded to pull the home team within two runs before 42,260 at Rogers Centre. Kirk and Rangers infielder Marcus Semien traded two-run homers in the bottom of the seventh and top of the eighth. Reliever Louis Varland (4-3) registered the win with Jeff Hoffman notching his 28th save. Jacob deGrom pitched five shutout innings, allowing only two hits with no walks and five strikeouts as the Rangers' (61-62) losing streak was extended to three games. Kyle Higashioka hammered a three-run homer in the second inning. The three-run blow was one of only four hits off Toronto starter Chris Bassitt, who lasted five innings on 100 pitches and matched a season-high four walks with four strikeouts. Blue Jays right fielder Nathan Lukes made a pair of defensive gems early. With his back against the wall, he jumped to take an extra base hit away from Joc Pederson in the first inning. In the second inning, Lukes fielded Evan Carter's rocket off the wall and caught the Rangers outfielder at second. Rangers: They began the day 3½ games back of the final American League wild-card spot. Blue Jays: George Springer homered in the second of his three at-bats in his rehab start for triple-A Buffalo on Friday. Shane Bieber pitched seven shutout innings in Buffalo, striking out four with six hits and no walks on 90 pitches. Springer is expected to rejoin Toronto on Saturday, and Bieber could make his Blue Jays debut next week. Key moment: Kirk's bases-loaded single in the eighth inning scored the tying and go-ahead runs. Key stat: Bassitt still hasn't suffered a loss at home in 2025, going 8-0 with six no decisions. Up next: Lefty Eric Lauer (7-2) will face Texas southpaw Patrick Corbin (6-8) in the middle outing of the three-game set on Saturday.
