Matthew Slater breaks silence after losing coaching job with Patriots

Yahoo11-02-2025

Former New England Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater, who served as an assistant coach last season, opened up about not returning on Mike Vrabel's new coaching staff in 2025.
Slater spent the 2024 season as an advisor to former Patriots coach Jerod Mayo. He rejoined the Patriots after a decorated playing career that saw him become one of the greatest special team gunners of all time.
He won three Super Bowls and made ten Pro Bowls, establishing himself as the cornerstone of the Patriots special teams operation. The legendary special teamer held that role from 2008-2023 before officially announcing his retirement.
"I've had a tremendous experience as a Patriot. They've been nothing but good to me," Slater told WBZ-TV's Dan Roche, via Matt Geagan of WBZ News. "They allowed me to live out my childhood dream and I'm very thankful for that. I'm thankful for all the Kraft family has done for me and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
"I'll always be a Patriots fan and always support the team. Right now, it's important that I support my family and that's what I'm going to do moving forward."
Slater will always hold a place in Patriots history as one of the most dominant players at his position. Furthermore, he will also hold a place as a true captain and locker room leader during his time with the organization.

Bills' Josh Allen Reveals Humbling Take on MVP Meaning

Bills' Josh Allen Reveals Humbling Take on MVP Meaning originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For most quarterbacks, winning an MVP award can be the highlight of their career. It's an honor not to be taken lightly. Advertisement Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has a different idea on how to treat his reigning MVP award status. In an exclusive Sports Illustrated interview, Allen talked about the honor of winning the award … but how it meant little compared to his overall legacy and goals. "I still didn't win a Super Bowl. Didn't win a ring, and that is the only goal. It's the only focus that I've ever had going into this league," said Allen. "The one positive, I will say, about winning an MVP means that your team is in a good position. "You're making the playoffs, you're playing well, and you're doing whatever you can to help your team win football games." Advertisement Allen's response to his MVP trophy is pretty humble stuff. He's become one of the best quarterbacks in the sport, but he knows his legacy will be tied directly to whether he can get the Bills to the promised land. In order to do that, Allen will likely need to find a way to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite having regular-season success against their bitter rivals, Allen and the Bills have yet to defeat the Chiefs in the playoffs. Making matters worse, Kansas City has won three Super Bowls during that span. Allen's MVP season was impressive. Despite the added popularity the award can bring, the Bills' franchise signal-caller is expecting more from himself in 2025 - and more from his team. Three-time SB champion excited for Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers: 'He's going to tear it up'

Three-time SB champion excited for Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers: 'He's going to tear it up' Aaron Rodgers definitely has his fair share of doubters heading into the 2025 season — but three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth isn't one of them. On a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Schlereth touched on the Jets' inefficient run game and Rodgers' lingering injuries, then explained how great the future Hall of Fame QB looked at the end of the 2024 season: "Toward the end of the season, when I dug through the three games that I always watch as I'm prepping — I'm breaking down the coach's film, three games — I was like, 'Damn, Aaron can play,'" Schlereth said. "And then I'm watching him pregame on Sunday morning, and pregame I'm watching him throw the football versus the way a bunch of 25-year-olds throw the football — and it's like varsity versus JV. That dude can still rip it. … If [Rodgers] is healthy, and you've got [the Steelers run game], mixed with that play-action game, he's going to tear it up." The Jets had the second-worst rushing offense in terms of yards last season — and while OC Arthur Smith made it clear the Steelers didn't acquire Rodgers and DK Metcalf to "run the wishbone," the four-time MVP should have a drastically better running game to work with in 2025.
