Delhi Air Pollution: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at making the national capital pollution-free, a key poll plank of the BJP in the last assembly election that ended its 28-year drought in the city.
From artificial rain to anti-smog guns, the multi-pronged strategy includes scientific innovations, legislative enforcement, and large-scale public participation to keep pollution in check ahead of the winter season when the capital becomes a 'gas chamber".
Addressing a press briefing, Gupta announced that Delhi will soon witness its first artificial rain through cloud seeding, a pilot project approved in collaboration with IIT Kanpur. 'To reduce and eliminate pollution, we will sign MoUs with all our science organisations, which will use their latest innovations and help the Delhi government in its fight against pollution," she said.
The initiative with IIT Kanpur is expected to test the viability of cloud seeding as a method to clean Delhi's toxic air.
Artificial rain may air quality slightly for some hours or a day or two depending on meteorological factors but experts do not view artificial rain as a sustainable solution to pollution problems.
Gupta also said that the government will launch a major plantation drive titled 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" on June 5 on the occasion of World Environment Day.
'The goal is to plant 70 lakh saplings across the city this year. Our aim is that Delhi should get better air. Delhi air should be good, people should prefer to stay in Delhi instead of going out," the CM said, highlighting the need for large-scale afforestation to combat urban pollution.
To curb vehicular emissions, the CM announced that from November 1, 2025, only BS6-compliant, CNG, or electric commercial vehicles will be allowed to enter the city. In support of this policy, the government will deploy Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at all entry points and petrol pumps across Delhi. These AI-enabled cameras will identify end-of-life vehicles and prevent them from operating in the capital.
'These steps are not just announcements; they are actionable, time-bound interventions," Gupta said, stressing the urgency of addressing air pollution through a combination of science, surveillance, and community involvement.

Air pollution continues to trouble Delhi residents year-round, except during the monsoon. In winter, AQI often hits hazardous levels due to stubble burning in neighbouring states, vehicular emissions, and lower temperatures.
While recent days have seen a slight decline in 'very poor" and 'hazardous" air quality days, the issue remains far from resolved.

On World Environment Day, PM Modi flags off Aravalli reforestation plan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi planted a sapling at the Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park here on World Environment Day on Thursday, extending the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign and launching a special initiative to reforest the 700-km Aravalli mountain range that stretches from Delhi to Gujarat. In a post on X, the prime minister said the Aravalli range is one of the oldest on the planet, covering Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi, and that the last several years have brought to the fore several environmental challenges relating to the range, which his government is committed to mitigating. "Our focus is to rejuvenate areas linked with this range. We are going to work with the respective local administrations and emphasise things such as improving water systems, curbing dust storms, stopping eastward expansion of the Thar desert and more," he said. "In the Aravalli range and beyond, in addition to the traditional planting methods, we will encourage new techniques, especially in urban and semi-urban areas where there are space constraints. Plantation activities will be geo-tagged and monitored on the Meri LiFE portal," he said. The prime minister called upon the youth to take part in the movement and contribute to increasing the planet's green cover. He also flagged off electric buses under the Delhi government's sustainable transport initiative. "This will also improve 'Ease of Living' for the people of Delhi," PM Modi said. The Aravalli Green Wall Project is a major initiative to expand green cover in the five-km buffer area around the Aravallis in 29 districts of the three states and a Union territory. The government said this initiative will play a crucial role in combating air pollution in the region, achieving India's climate goal of creating an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and restoring 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. The project will enhance the biodiversity of the Aravallis through afforestation, reforestation and restoration of water bodies. It will also help improve soil fertility and water availability in the region, the government said. It added that the project will benefit local communities by generating employment and income opportunities. The chief ministers of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat also participated in the launch of the project. Officials from the environment ministry said around 1,000 nurseries will be developed in the 29 districts located in the Aravalli range as part of the initiative. The five-km wide green buffer will cover 6.45 million hectares across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi. Within this buffer zone, about 42 per cent (2.7 million hectares) of land is currently degraded. The Aravalli range acts as a natural barrier against desertification, preventing the expansion of the Thar desert and protecting cities such as Delhi, Jaipur and Gurugram. It is also the source of important rivers such as the Chambal, Sabarmati and Luni. Its forests, grasslands and wetlands support endangered plant and animal species. However, deforestation, mining, livestock grazing, and human encroachment are worsening desertification, damaging aquifers, drying up lakes and reducing the range's ability to sustain wildlife. Of the total degraded area, 81 per cent is in Rajasthan, 15.8 per cent in Gujarat, 1.7 per cent in Haryana and 1.6 per cent in Delhi.

BJP leader R Ashoka on Thursday took a dig at the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in the state alleging that those who celebrated by raising the IPL trophy, went to airport and took selfies with the RCB team will not go to homes of those who lost their lives in the stampede. In a post on 'X' the leader of opposition termed the Congress government "heartless" and shared pictures from a felicitation ceremony held by state government in Vidhana Soudha for the RCB team. In one of the pictures, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was seen donning turban on Virat Kohli while in another picture, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar was seen lifting the IPL trophy won by RCB team after a wait of 18 years. "Those who celebrated yesterday by raising the trophy and taking photos will not come to support the families of the innocent people who died. Those who were happy yesterday when they went to the airport and took selfies will not go to the homes of the deceased today and shed tears," he alleged. Ashoka further alleged that those who honoured cricket players yesterday by donning turbans and garlanding them cannot even come to lay soil on the graves of the dead today. "The lives of ordinary people have no value for this heartless @INCKarnataka government," he added. He continued to reiterate his demand seeking resignation of Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. According to Home Minister, G Parameshwara, 11 people have died and 56 have been injured in the stampede. Among the injured, 46 have gone back home after the treatment, while 10 are at hospital and their condition is not serious according to doctors, he added.

His father has lodged a complaint with Kalna SDO and cops have started a probe. In the complaint to SDO Shubham Aggarwal, the victim's father stated that he had sent his son to work at an imitation ornament factory owned by Hapal Mollah two years ago. "My boy complained that he was often assaulted. The employer didn't even pay him regularly," the boy's mother said. He had to be given IV drips and blood at the hospital, she said. Rajkot resident Molla had come to the family's home two years ago. "Due to extreme poverty, I was compelled to let my son go. Since then, he has been subjected to torture and beatings. My son's body is covered with scars. Last Sunday, a man named Kalu Ram brought him to Howrah station and handed him to us. We brought him home and immediately took him to the hospital, where he was admitted. We demand strict punishment for the culprit," the mother said. Kalna BDO (I) Supratik Saha told TOI: "The SDO has instructed an inquiry and we have arranged for the boy's treatment." Police said that they started a case against the employer for causing intentional grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon per Section 118 (2) of BNS. "Bengal govt, led by CM Mamata Banerjee, has assured that necessary steps are being taken to ensure the boy's care and protection," the party posted on X, adding, "In PM Narendra Modi's double engine state Gujarat, child labour is not only perpetuated but also accompanied by dehumanising treatment! In their contempt for Bengal, BJP is openly condoning these heinous acts against our people. CM Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal govt is taking all necessary measures to ensure his well-being and safety." TMC Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Biswas, also the chairperson of Bengal Migrant Workers' Welfare Board, said the panel was concerned with such incidents on the rise. "If needed, we will provide compensation to the boy," he said.
