Mira Nair's Son Zohran Mamdani, Running For NY Mayor Post, Under Fire For Attacking PM Modi
When asked if he would meet Modi if the Indian PM held a rally in New York and asked for a joint press conference, Mamdani said he wouldn't attend such an event
New York City mayoral candidate and Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, the son of filmmaker Mira Nair, sparked outrage among Indo-American leaders and community representatives for spreading hate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 33-year-old made the remarks at an event, 'New Mayor, New Media', held on May 15 (local time) by New York Focus.
WHAT MAMDANI SAID?
When asked if he would meet Modi if the Indian PM held a rally in New York and asked for a joint press conference, Mamdani said he wouldn't attend such an event, equating Modi to Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu and calling him a 'war criminal", according to the New York Post.
He then went on to blame the PM for the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying people were 'shocked" when he revealed he was a Gujarati Muslim.
The Supreme Court in 2022 upheld the Special Investigation Team's (SIT) clean chit to then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and 63 others in the 2002 riots in the state.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an interview with US-based podcaster and AI researcher Lex Fridman, earlier this year, called Godhra train incident a tragedy of ' unimaginable magnitude" which became a 'sparking point for violence". 'But that one tragic incident in 2002 became a sparking point, leading some people towards violence. Yet, the judiciary thoroughly investigated the matter. At that time, our political opponents were in power, and naturally they wanted all allegations against us to stick. Despite their relentless efforts, the judiciary analysed the situation meticulously twice and ultimately found us completely innocent. Those who were truly responsible have faced justice from the courts," he said.
MAMDANI'S INDIAN CONNECTION
Zohran Mamdani, the son of Indian-American Mira Nair, was born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, before moving to New York City at the age of seven. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan, has roots in Gujarat.
Nair's films include Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist.

'HIGHLY OBJECTIONABLE FOR HINDUS': NOT THE FIRST TIME
Mamdani is known for criticising New York politicians of Indian descent — Queens Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar and former state Sen. Kevin Thomas — for not condemning Modi.
In 2020, he said on X: '@JeniferRajkumar should return the money she's taken from Hindu fascists."
Rajkumar had then called Mamdani's comments 'extreme and divisive," and urged voters to 'reject hate, whether from the far left or far right." 'Hinduism is a faith of peace, nonviolence, and interfaith harmony. Hindu voters want our leaders to build bridges—not burn them. We must reject hate—whether it comes from the far left or the far right. Our city deserves leaders who unite, not provoke—who build coalitions, not headlines," she said.
A central tenet of Hinduism is inclusivity and mutual respect toward people of all faiths. Hindus believe not just in tolerance, but in one step more than tolerance– actively loving and respecting people of different backgrounds and faiths.— Jenifer Rajkumar (@JeniferRajkumar) August 8, 2022
Mamdani has also said on X: '@KevinThomasNY should acknowledge the terrifying truth of what's happening to Muslim Indians."
He also said former Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney should 'renounce her association with Modi & condemn the atrocities he's perpetrated."
Jaspreet Singh, a Sikh Community Leader and human rights lawyer, said, 'Hate has no place in our city. We believe in equality, love and respect for all. We believe all are children of the same God. But Zohran has used his platform to amplify some of the worst anti-Hindu rhetoric imaginable. Words matter, and instead of uniting the Indian community, he seeks to divide us by religion, pitting Muslims and Hindus against each other. Associating Hindus with fascism and using derogatory words against them is highly objectionable."

Mamdani also reportedly trashed Barack Obama, accusing the former US president of lying, in a series of tweets from 2013 which resurfaced recently.
Mamdani, who is polling second behind ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, repeatedly refused to sign off an annual, non-controversial resolution simply commemorating May 4 as 'Volunteer Firefighters Day'. Mamdani was also one of the few Assembly Democrats to vote against a bill eventually signed into law creating a task force to help with recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters in New York. In 2023, he also voted against providing $25 million to volunteer fire departments statewide for new equipment and facilities and another $10 million to provide stipends to volunteer firefighters for offset training costs.

‘8 lakh' strays, no govt shelters, Delhi has to redraw its plan
With the Supreme Court underlining that stray dogs should not be returned to the streets, the Delhi government has been forced to rethink its strategy on controlling the canine population — estimated at around 8 lakh in the Capital. According to a senior Delhi government official, the current practice, as per the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, is to pick up the stray dogs, take them to hospitals for sterilisation, and then release them back on the streets from where they were picked up. 'We have been focusing on the stray dog menace and have held several meetings but now, with the apex court's order, that becomes irrelevant as the context completely changes… The government will implement the order but it is not possible to pick up the dogs and move them out of the city or to the shelters right now,' the official said. The official said that as the government does not have any shelter of its own, the implementation of the court order may take longer than eight weeks. While the government has hospitals, all the shelters are currently run by non-governmental organisations (NGOs). In its order on Monday, the Supreme Court asked the authorities to make shelters to house stray dogs, saying they should first start work on a shelter for 5,000-6,000 dogs in the next six to eight weeks. It sought a report within eight weeks on the creation of infrastructure. Meanwhile, hours after the Supreme Court's directions, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ordered that dogs admitted to its hospitals and other animal sterilisation centres should not be released after recovery. The corporation has also ordered an audit of the existing facilities to house dogs temporarily. 'We have asked the centres not to release the dogs there for sterilisation. We are discussing plans regarding building additional shelters, but this will take time. As of now, we have asked the centres to submit how many dogs they can accommodate. Dogs will also be housed in 77 units of vet hospitals run by the MCD. We will start picking up the dogs according to the available facility,' said Dr S K Yadav, project in-charge, Animal Programme, MCD. He said the corporation picked up 200 dogs from the Red Fort area ahead of Independence Day celebrations, and these would not be released now. 'The estimated population of stray dogs in the city is around 8 lakh. We will follow the SC's orders,' he said, adding that they would first focus on vulnerable areas like schools, colleges, hospitals and public spaces. Delhi Development Minister Kapil Mishra is scheduled to hold a meeting with the concerned departments and officials on Wednesday to discuss the matter. 'We are fully committed to abide by the orders and directions issued by the Supreme Court. We have been working on this issue proactively, to address it on the ground from day one, studying the legal and technical obstacles that existed in the previous system,' he said. He said the government would implement the order in a planned manner, keeping both the public as well as the dog lovers in mind. 'Our focus, while implementing this order, will be the welfare of animals,' he said. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, meanwhile, said the 'stray dog menace' had assumed 'gigantic proportions' and assured that her government would bring in a policy soon. 'The people of Delhi have been worried about the stray dog menace for years… our only duty is to give them relief… Today, this problem has taken a gigantic form… it is very important for the government to resolve it with honesty and integrity,' she said. '… we are looking into what the previous governments did… Since our government was formed, it is continuously discussing the issue and holding meetings to provide relief to the people,' the CM said.

India holds firm in US trade talks, eyes EU pact amid tariff tensions
In a key meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Foreign Secretary and the Commerce Secretary briefed members on India-US relations and ongoing trade negotiations, sources said on Monday Regarding the upcoming US delegation visit for trade negotiations, the government indicated there is no change in schedule.(REUTERS) The government outlined three categories under which the US has been imposing tariffs. The issues included Global Tariffs - measures applied to all countries, not just India, sector-specific tariffs - designed to attract certain industries to the US, such as automobiles, leather, and textiles and revenue-oriented tariffs - targeting sectors like agriculture and oil for revenue generation. Officials stressed that negotiations with the US are continuing, but India will not compromise in the agriculture and dairy sectors. The government is actively assessing the impact of tariffs in consultation with stakeholders, including exporters, and is exploring alternative trade partnerships. Talks on trade agreements with the EU are being expedited, and new agreements with other countries are also under consideration. On broader ties, the government noted that India-US relations remain strong beyond trade. Recent developments include resolutions passed at the UN Security Council and the QUAD on the Pahalgam attacks, the extradition of Tahawwur Rana from the US, and the designation of TRF as a terrorist organisation. There has been no India-US dialogue regarding Pakistan in the current trade discussions. Committee Chairperson Shashi Tharoor confirmed that around 50 questions were raised in the meeting. He reiterated that trade is only one dimension of the India-US partnership. On Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir's nuclear threat remark, the government stated that such statements are unacceptable, especially when made from the soil of a friendly country. Regarding the upcoming US delegation visit for trade negotiations, the government indicated there is no change in schedule. On whether the nuclear threat issue would be raised with Washington, officials deferred to the Foreign Secretary but affirmed that such rhetoric is unwelcome. Commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the government noted that if the war ends, 25 per cent of existing tariffs--imposed due to India's purchase of Russian oil--would be lifted. However, India remains focused on addressing the remaining 25 per cent tariff impact.

Delhi HC orders reconstruction of 1984 anti-Sikh riots case records to ensure fair trial
The Delhi High Court has ordered the reconstruction of four-decade-old trial records in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, saying the victims' and society's right to a fair investigation and trial cannot be compromised by missing files or flawed earlier proceedings. The directive, issued to the trial court, concerns the acquittal of five men including former Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar in the killing of four Sikhs in Ghaziabad's Raj Nagar. The court said the available material revealed 'several lacunae' in both the investigation and trial. The murders took place on November 1, 1984, a day after then PM Indira Gandhi's assassination. Three women had alleged that their husbands and son were burnt alive. In 1986, the trial court acquitted Khokhar and four others, citing lack of evidence. Now, nearly 40 years later, a bench of justices Subramanian Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar WHEN has acted on petitions challenging the correctness of that verdict. The bench had earlier observed that the 1986 judgment appeared 'unsustainable' and noted it was being relied on in appeals by Khokhar, Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal, Mahender Yadav, and Krishan Khokhar against their 2013 conviction for murdering five Sikhs in the same locality. Neither the state nor the victims had appealed the 1986 acquittal at the time. The court said the available material -- composite challans and the final judgments -- revealed 'several lacunae' in both the investigation and trial. Key eyewitnesses were never examined because summons were sent to addresses destroyed or abandoned during the riots. 'A composite challan has been filed for several cases, prima facie reflecting a perfunctory investigation,' the court said in its 66-page order, adding that the matter 'cannot be left to rest at this juncture.' Citing Supreme Court precedent in Abhai Raj Singh, the bench ruled that the trial court must reconstruct the records of Sessions Cases 31 and 32 of 1986, and only then can the High Court assess whether the original acquittals can stand. The matter will be heard next on September 1. 'The valuable rights of victims and the society at large to a free and fair investigation as also a real trial cannot be allowed to be compromised as a result of fait accompli,' the court observed. Senior advocate HS Phoolka, appearing for the complainants, argued that the 1986 investigation and trial were 'thoroughly inadequate and sketchy' and urged that the matters be remanded for retrial. Amicus curiae Siddharth Aggarwal asserted that the court, before giving any findings into the correctness of the judgements passed by the additional sessions judges, was under a mandate to call for the records, examine the same and only then proceed ahead in the matter. He submitted that the trial court records had been weeded out and it was inappropriate for the court to proceed further with the matter without getting the records. Khokhar's counsel had asserted that ordering a re-trial or further investigation, when the records have been weeded out, would violate his client's right to free trial. In a separate 26-page judgment, the same bench directed the authorities to widely publicise the various government compensation schemes available for victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. It further instructed them to verify victims' claims within 16 weeks of receiving them and to disburse the compensation within two months thereafter.
