City on short fuse over power cuts: BJP, SAD leaders
Nidhi.Bhardwaj@timesofindia.com
Ludhiana: With power cuts disrupting life in the city, leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) attacked the ruling party for failing to tackle the problem.
They said that the entire city, including poll-bound west constituency, faced the problem of power cuts. In a few areas, the power cuts were 10 to 12 hours long, the leaders said, adding that the AAP government and Powercom had been exposed.
Senior BJP leader and west constituency in-charge Avinash Rai Khanna held a press conference on the issue at the BJP election office in Khanna on Saturday. Addressing mediapersons, Khanna said, "Being in-charge of this constituency, I meet people daily, and they have serious problems due to power cuts."
He added that residents of areas like Sarabha Nagar, Rajguru Nagar, Rishi Nagar, Sunet, and SBS Nagar, which fall under the west constituency, endure 10 to 12 hours of power cuts.
In certain constituencies, there were 18-hour long power cuts as well, he said.
Khanna questioned AAP candidate, Sanjeev Arora, saying, "The AAP candidate claims that he is like a second CM and any work can be done in the city on his direction but to date, he has never raised this issue and responded to people about government's failure to fulfill its promise of providing 24/7 electricity supply."
He said that the Powercom department did not have adequate staff to check infrastructure-related complaints and even lines needed replacement. Elaborating on issues faced by the industry, Khanna said, "The industry was promised power supply at Rs 5 per unit, but they still are getting it at Rs 9 to Rs 10 per unit. Even then, there are power cuts for a long duration. Now, when there is no power supply, they are using generators and extra money is being spent on diesel.
"
Meanwhile, SAD candidate, Parupkar Singh Ghumman, also attacked the ruling party for creating problems due to power cuts. "I also live in the west constituency and I can feel the pain of people living here and in other areas. If the poll-bound west constituency is not getting uninterrupted power supply, what can be expected in other areas?" He said.
Ghumman pointed out that regular power cuts had precipitated a water crisis as well as MC tubewells would not work. He said that during a meeting with residents at Professor Colony, he found that people at the end of their tether because of the power cuts that they staged a protest at night.

Will pad up and bat if captain tells me to: Kanhaiya on contesting Bihar polls
Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar on Friday said that he will contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls if the party tells him to. Using a cricketing analogy, Kumar said that just like batting, bowling, and fielding are responsibilities that have to be fulfilled on the cricket field, fighting polls is also a responsibility in politics. "To fight polls, to make others fight polls and campaign, all are responsibilities that the party allots. If the party tells me to contest the polls then I will fight the elections also. Earlier also, when I contested the polls, it was on the orders of the party," he told PTI in an interview when asked whether he will contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls slated later this year. "If the captain tells me to sit outside and deliver drinks for those at the crease, I will do that. And if the captain tells me to, I will also pad up and bat," Kumar said on the possibility of him contesting assembly polls. On the Congress projecting him as a prominent face in Bihar, Kumar said the party has given him a responsibility like it does to its lakhs of workers. It is like in a team where different people have a separate role, he added. Live Events "Earlier, (MS) Dhoni was the wicketkeeper. Now (Rishabh) Pant is there," he said, drawing a cricketing parallel. Asserting that the party functions with collective effort, Kumar said the decision to contest polls should also be collective. "I have been a strong votary of the principle that fighting an election is a collective decision. Like other responsibilities, fighting polls is also a responsibility. Like batting, bowling, and fielding are all responsibilities that have to be fulfilled, fighting polls is also a responsibility," he told PTI. Kumar, a former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union, had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls twice. He first contested general elections on a CPI ticket from Bihar's Begusarai in 2019 and then as a Congress nominee from Northeast Delhi in 2024. On the Election Commission asking for place of birth certificates starting with Bihar polls, Kumar said the Congress has asked the poll panel to rectify the anomalies in the voters list. "Today, if you raise questions on EC, they are answered by the BJP. You raise questions on ED, and answers are given by the BJP. You raise questions on the CBI and the Income Tax Department, answers are given by the BJP. I would like to remind you that it was the BJP that raised the questions over EVMs... So, if you (the BJP) raises questions it is ok but if we do the same, it is wrong," he said. "First you were saying there is no error. Now you are starting this process from Bihar. So, you are accepting that there is a mistake. And if there is a mistake, your focus should be on rectifying that and not harassing people. A Process should not become a punishment and the issues that have been raised should be rectified honestly," Kumar said.

Karnataka HC quashes case against Bommai for remarks against Waqf board
The Karnataka High Court on Friday quashed two hate speech cases filed against former Chief Minister and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Basavaraj Bommai, according to a report by Bar and Bench. Bommai was accused of promoting enmity between religious groups after he accused Waqf authorities of land encroachment. 'If a stone is thrown in Savanur, wherever it falls, it is Waqf land,' Bommai had said in November 2024. Bommai made these alleged remarks during a BJP rally to condemn the Waqf Board and Siddaramaih-led government for allegedly grabbing the properties of farmers and temples. Court says complaint vague, quashes proceedings against Bommai Following his remarks, Bommai was booked under Section 196(1)(a) (promoting enmity between groups) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS). Terming the criminal complaints frivolous and vindictive, Bommai filed two petitions and challenged the complaint. Justice SR Krishna Kumar, while hearing the case, noted, "In light of the vague, bald, omnibus, laconic allegations made in the impugned complaint, coupled with principles stated by the apex court and this court.. I am of the view that the continuation of the impugned proceedings would amount to abuse of process of law.. allowed, quashed." Waqf Bill 2025 In the early hours of April 3, 2025, Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2025 after a 12-hour-long debate on it. While leaders of the Opposition parties accused the Centre of interfering in the religious affairs of Muslims, the latter defended themselves by denying all the allegations. The Waqf Amendment Bill aims to bring reforms to the management of Waqf properties in India. The Bill was passed with a 288 majority in the Lok Sabha and was passed in the Rajya Sabha on April 4, 2025. The bill received 128 votes in favour and 95 against and now awaits President Droupadi Murmu's assent to make it a law. Earlier this month, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the Centre is working to make the Central Waqf Council more robust and responsive in its service to the community.

Kolkata horror: TMC, BJP trade barbs over rape case in law college; cops nab 5 accused
Representative image NEW DELHI: A political blame game has erupted amid the uproar over the rape case that has been reported in a Kolkata-based law college, with both ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pointing fingers at one another. While TMC pointedly blamed the BJP for "delaying" the passage of the 'Aparajita' anti-rape bill, brought in the wake of the tragic RG Kar rape case, the BJP hit out at the Mamata Banerjee government for "failing to take action in cases involving crimes against women due to political considerations". Condemning the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College, TMC wrote on X: "This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments. It is extremely unfortunate that the BJP govt at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented. " Last year, West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose referred the "Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024" to President Droupadi Murmu, citing "multiple loopholes" in the legislation. The bill, passed by the state assembly following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital on May 9, 2024, proposes capital punishment for rape convicts if the assault results in the victim's death or leaves her in a vegetative state. The BJP, which is the key opposition in West Bengal, levelled the TMC government "anti-women" and demanded "a fair and unbiased investigation, free from political interference." "TMC government is anti-women, which is why it tries to protect the accused. The Mamata Banerjee government consistently fails to take action in cases involving crimes against women due to political considerations. Data suggests that crimes against women are on the rise in Bengal. We demand a fair and unbiased investigation, free from political interference," BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari told news agency PTI. West Bengal BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh claimed the mentality of society has deteriorated due to the language spoken by CM Mamata Banerjee. "Horrific. I should say that the situation in West Bengal is horrific. The atrocities against women are increasing day by day. The way the girl student was raped within the premises by, as I know the present and the ex-student, shows the deteriorating mentality of our society. I should say that this kind of mentality is due to the language spoken by our is becoming a kind of shelter for these criminals. These arrests are nothing," Ghosh told news agency ANI. In the incident, which is the eerily reminiscent of the gut-wrenching RG Kar case, a student was allegedly raped on the night of June 25 within the premises of a Kolkata law college, leading to the arrest of three men, two students and a staff member who is also an alumnus of the institution. Police identified the accused as Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay alias Pramit Mukherjee (20).
