Paddy Pimblett labelled 'idiot from Europe' and targeted by formidable UFC star

Daily Mirror03-06-2025
The Liverpudlian is targeting a return to action later this year and has recently been called out by a fellow top contender in the lightweight division
Polish MMA star Mateusz Gamrot has called for a fight with Paddy Pimblett following his impressive victory on Saturday night.
The 34-year-old didn't mince words, dubbing Pimblett as the 'idiot from Europe' when naming opponents he would like to fight next. Currently sitting just a one sport above Liverpool's own in the lightweight division at number seven, Gamrot is itching for the challenge.

Since joining the UFC ranks in 2020, Gamrot has been nothing short of formidable. He has amassed a respectable 8-3 record within the promotion. With a professional record of 25-3, the Polish powerhouse has dispatched notable fighters such as Jeremy Stephens, Carlos Diego Ferreira, Arman Tsarukyan, Jalin Turner, Rafael Fiziev, and Rafael dos Anjos.

On Saturday night, Gamrot clinched another victory, cruising to a unanimous decision over Ludovit Klein at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Post-fight, UFC icon Daniel Cormier was quick to ask the 34-year-old who he would like to fight next. "Everybody, bro, everybody," declared Gamrot.
"Give me the list. I want to fight with everybody... Paddy [Pimblett] is the idiot from Europe, I want to fight with him. But like you said, if Benoit Saint-Denis want the smoke? [That's] another easy fight. Paris, main event, five rounds, give me this guy [Saint-Denis]."
Gamrot's call-out comes not long after Pimblett picked up the biggest win of his career against Michael Chandler. From start-to-finish, the Liverpool native dominated proceedings as he picked up a vicious knockout in the third round. He has since called for top lightweight contenders as he targets a return to the cage before the end of the year.
Pimblett is setting his sights on an October showdown with Justin Gaethje, believing a win would put him at the front of the queue for a UFC lightweight title shot. "I know for a fact if I beat Gaethje, I'm next in line. Definitely. It could be (the next fight)," Pimblett revealed to TNT Sports.
"It's just if he says yeah or not. Because he's fighting down the rankings again. Abu Dhabi. October. That pay-per-view. That's when I want to fight. That's what I'll be gearing towards. After what I've done to (Michael) Chandler, I think I finish Justin Gaethje... Yeah, that'd be nice [to fight Gaethje]."
He added: "But I was thinking about it the other day: It's probably better if Ilia wins the belt, because he'll probably call me out and then I could just fight him. Maybe I wouldn't even fight Gaethje, [and I could] just fight Topuria... It'd be far better for my career if Ilia wins because I'd, more than likely, be his first title defence."

Jamie Carragher makes Mikel Arteta 'points won' dig at Gary Neville's Prem predictions

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville locked horns once again on the Sky Sports YouTube channel, with the former taking delight in a comment made by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta Mikel Arteta found himself in Jamie Carragher's crosshairs as the pundit argued with Gary Neville over their Premier League predictions. The Sky Sports duo featured on the broadcaster's YouTube channel to review their past Premier League winner forecasts from recent years. ‌ While Neville claimed he was ahead in their prediction battle, the former Liverpool star hit back with a hilarious reference to Arteta's comments from the start of the season. When questioned about catching up to his ex-rival, Carragher said: "But I've actually got more points over that time, and have you heard Mikel Arteta of late? Mikel Arteta is right. ‌ "He's got more points than anyone over the last three seasons. And I've got more points over him over the last five seasons." ‌ The former Liverpool defender's dig referenced remarks made by the Arsenal manager during a press conference before the new Premier League season kicked off. The Spaniard said at the time: "Yeah, you keep digging, digging, digging and you have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there. "That's all the time. When I've been taught, when I've been educated and that's it. "For three seasons we've had more points than any other team in this league, which is incredible. That's how you have all the consistency. ‌ "Now we have to do it in a season to have one more point or the same amount of points and more goals different than any other team. That's the objective." Whilst Arteta's remarks about the points total are entertaining and peculiar, they aren't actually accurate either. Despite finishing ahead of Manchester City last season, Pep Guardiola's side have still gathered the most points across the previous three league campaigns, totalling 251. ‌ Arsenal, in second place, have amassed 247 points from the last three seasons combined, whilst Liverpool have collected 233. During the same discussion over the Premier League crown, Neville supported the Gunners once more this year, believing the side will ultimately "get it over the line." Neville said: "I've got to stick with Arsenal because I've felt they were going to win it for the last three years. I felt they're going to get it over the line, and it would be wrong of me to change now and I can't split the three of them to be fair." ‌ Carragher remained loyal to his former club, who finished 10 points clear of Arsenal last campaign, despite harbouring some concerns about their season's beginning. He said: "I'm going to go for Liverpool but I do think I agree with you in that I think all three of them - anything could happen. "I was a little bit unnerved by what I saw from Liverpool in the first game and there might be a case of, I think there's got to be a little bit of rejigging going on in terms of how we set the team up. It's still early days and you obviously back [Arne] Slot to find a way to make that work." Naturally, Arteta is confident his own squad can finally shake off their misfortune and secure that elusive title. Speaking about the atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium, he added: "The mood of the place, the energy around it, the enthusiasm that the boys, the staff came with from day one, now we're going to do better, to keep improving as a team and to win. "That's what drives my energy and that's why I'm so excited." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Northern Ireland boss confident Premier League star will be ‘ready to play' in opening World Cup qualifiers

Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill is anticipating that Liverpool star Conor Bradley will be 'ready to play' in next month's World Cup qualifiers in Luxembourg and Germany despite missing the start of the Premier League season. Moments before O'Neill's media briefing on Thursday afternoon at Windsor Park to announce his latest squad – which included Bradley – Liverpool manager Arne Slot revealed that the full-back had trained for 'a few minutes' with the Reds having been ruled out of the FA Community Shield against Crystal Palace and last Friday's 4-2 victory over Bournemouth due to a hamstring injury. The timing of Bradley's return is particularly useful for the Anfield outfit, with summer signing Jeremie Frimpong, who started at right-back versus Palace and the Cherries, now side-lined until after the international break. Whether or not Bradley features or starts in Monday's League game at Newcastle United remains to be seen but O'Neill was sounding positive about the prospects of the Tyrone native being available for the crucial September double header. That will be a boost for the rest of the national team and the fans, who recognise the Premier League winner as one of the country's most influential players. O'Neill stated: 'Conor's good. You know he'd be frustrated because his pre-season I think was going very well and, like anything, there's such competition at a club like Liverpool that you don't want to be injured because you have to try and find your way back into the team. 'But he gets opportunities. There's so many games with the Premier League season and the start of the Champions League. 'We just have to be mindful of where Conor's at physically when we look at him in these two games, but we anticipate that he'll be ready to play and we'll obviously have the dialogue with Liverpool to get their thoughts on that as well. 'Hopefully Conor can get minutes before we meet up on Sunday week.' On that Sunday week O'Neill refers to – August 31 – Liverpool host Arsenal prior to the Northern Ireland squad assembling to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers. Bradley would relish starting in that one. Three of O'Neill's players in his 26 man squad have already played in the Premier League this term – Sunderland duo Trai Hume and Daniel Ballard plus Crystal Palace's Justin Devenny, who came on as a late substitute in his side's scoreless draw at Chelsea on the opening weekend having netted the winning penalty in the shoot-out against Liverpool at Wembley in the Community Shield. Devenny is developing superbly for the Eagles, and with Eberechi Eze set to join Arsenal, the 21-year-old may enjoy even more first team opportunities. 'I think (Palace manager) Oliver Glasner has a lot of faith in Justin,' said O'Neill. 'He gets minutes off the bench. Like anything, sometimes it's maybe not as much as what he'd like, but there's real competition in that team and the position that he plays in. 'I think with Justin, we have a lot of versatility in him. We played him as a wing-back in June and I thought he did extremely well. He's got a real positive attitude to play wherever you ask him to play. 'He's trying to get into a very good and established Premier League team. The players that are keeping him out of that team are moving to Arsenal and that shows you the competition for places. Hopefully, as I say, he just continues on that upward curve. 'Also he showed his confidence, belief, to come on and take the penalty (at Wembley). I think he's very highly thought of at his club.' O'Neill was at the Stadium of Light last weekend to see Hume and Ballard make their Premier League debuts in a 3-0 win against West Ham with the latter scoring. 'Sunderland have invested very heavily in the team and they've invested well based on what I saw in the game. That club's been on a really positive journey for the last three or four seasons,' said O'Neill. 'With the team that started, Trai and Daniel and one other player were the only three players from last season. 'It shows you the regard they're held in by the people at that club. Sunderland clearly have taken on a strategy where they're not just going up to the Premier League to take part and get the financial benefits of that. 'They want to make sure that they can stabilise and stay in the League. If they can do that the first year, you build on that, and the two lads (Hume and Ballard) were terrific in the game against West Ham. 'I think when you have that kind of start, then you have that belief that you can deal with the Premier League. I don't think they should have any fear. It was a real positive start for both of them.' O'Neill added that he has further been encouraged by the early season performances of other key players, such as Shea Charles at Southampton and another Championship ace in Ethan Galbraith following his transfer to Swansea City. The key for the manager is that all of his big hitters are good to go and injury free when the matches in Luxembourg on September 4 and Germany three days later come around.

Slot reveals Liverpool's transfer plans for remainder of window

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot declined to comment on Alexander Isak but affirmed the club's transfer policy, stating they will only sign players who are the right fit, at the right price, and who wish to join. Speculation about Alexander Isak's future intensified after he publicly accused Newcastle of broken promises and expressed a desire to leave, following Newcastle's rejection of a £110 million bid. Newcastle United responded by stating that the conditions for Isak's sale this summer have not been met and are not expected to be. Slot expressed satisfaction with his current squad, indicating he does not foresee a busy end to the transfer window. Liverpool faces injury concerns at right-back, with new signing Jeremie Frimpong out until after the international break due to a hamstring injury, and Joe Gomez only recently returning to training.
